True, but he’s asking if it’s the best way to get them to only do it on the night.

Does love trading lead to your men doing it on other nights too?

You can’t love trade weeks in advance, you must do it in the moment. It gets your man/men. It gets them going.

Just read Twomey’s mock draft, I just find it hard to believe a bid for West isn’t expected until the 20’s. Surely much earlier than that as he looks to be a better projected player than quite a few in there.

Maybe the recruiters caught wind that he’s a poor trainer, an alcoholic & doesn’t think Africa by Toto is one of the greatest songs of all time

Can’t see Port not taking Rozee with 5. That leaves us deciding between B.Smith and B.King it would appear, assuming we keep 7. I just can’t see the incentive for GWS to trade 9/19 for 7/27. They will get Jones or Caldwell at 9 anyway. Our best chance is Port wanting to jump ahead of Adelaide, but they may well want B.King with our 7.

As fun as it is playing around with live trades seems the experts aren't expecting there to be much of it

Still praying GWS will trade 9/11 and 19 for our first (although I don't understand why they would). As good as Smith looks, he's just not what we need. I'd much rather add Butters (outside mid, quick, classy) and Sturt/Taylor (proper forwards). Especially when we're already guaranteed West as an inside mid addition.

Afl have confirmed that teams can trade out there next pick once a bit on a player has been placed. For example if a bit for West came at 15 we could trade our newly acquired pick 19. That makes life a lot easier

I think we will trade with Port for pick 10 and 15..... if Ben King makes it past Gold Coast.

Think about it.. Port has been linked to Ben King lately. They have been said to be really keen. They decide to take Rozee at pick 5 first, with the hope of getting King with their second pick.

Enter the dogs with pick 7.

Win win for both clubs.

We can get Smith and then have some nice choices at pick 15 :)

To confirm, we’re potting a 17 year old who could potentially be our first round pick for not underage drinking and for having his parents with him at the Whitten Oval in an unknown capacity.

Seriously?

In isolation what you are saying seems harsh.

But then there are reports that Smith is refusing to move out of home to even go and play in Geelong...and then there is the achilles problem which derailed half.his season and could be an overtraining injury.

Interesting player Smith. Early reports have him projecting as a Tom Scully type IMO. Personally not a Scully fan but thats just me.

I potted him for not wanting to go interstate, when 15 of the first 20 picks belong to interstate teams. How can you have a fair
system in this case plenty of players would give anything for an opportunity. It's a very fine line between dedicated and
obsessive, Sam Walsh may not be the most talented player in the pool, but his attitude is first rate and selfless.

GWS already made the offer. We refused.

That would be a ripper draft for Port. Rozee and King. Win-win. Could Smith be gone at 8 or 9?

Except they want Jones, not Caldwell, and Adelaide are sniffing all over Jones. That's exactly why the trade was proposed.

The reason for Smith supposedly "sliding" has nothing to do with go-home factor, or trying to tell interstate clubs "hands off". The same has been said of guys like Rankine and Lukosius all year, and that was never going to stop the Gold Coast from picking them; after all, best available.

If Smith makes it to pick 7 or even pick 11, it's probably because scouts/recruiters don't think he has as high a ceiling as the other top prospects. One of the main reasons he did so well this year was the result of being physically stronger than the other midfielders, and as a result, could break through tackles more than the rest. All skinny players are expected to put on muscle at an AFL club, so it's one of the things recruiters care least about.

At best, Smith could end up with an Oliver Wines/Jordan Lewis/Joel Corey type of player, which would be great, but hardly in the Judd/Fyfe/Bont types you dream of. If we weren't so lucky, he could also turn into a Rockliff/Jack Steele/Andrew Swallow, which would be underwhelming.
Meanwhile with a player like Max/Ben King, while it's possible they could dud it up like Boyd and McCartin, they also have the capacity to reach Paul Salmon heights, which is far more difficult to find than any midfielder.

All hail Power if this comes off!

It wont happen...
As I understand it GWS pushed for 7 and 27 for 11 and 19.
Dogs wont do that as they are nervous Smith may get grabbed by the Giants at pick 9 if they had 7 and 9.
We were entertaining the idea of 9 and 19 for 7 and 27 but the motivation for GWS to do that isnt as strong for a 2 spot jump.

Smith has genuine pace and a good reliable kick which I think differentiates him from a lot of the comparisons you mentioned. His work ethic is also first class which will hold him in good stead in constantly finding ways to improve which is something I think a lot of the players above (barring Ollie Wines) also lack. I do agree Ben Kings ceiling is higher and at this point in time If I was choosing between the two in isolation at pick 7, I’d probably favour him for the longer term. I think the dogs have a strong sense of smith contributing at AFL level from early next year which, in spite of his lower ceiling, may be more appealing to us given where we’re placed in terms of our list build.
