wtg - do you think we may try to upgrade and gain a second first rounder before we put the cue in the rack ready for the draft?
I think we might look at it but it will be hard because all the clubs with academy players have already traded out of the early rounds of the draft. Sydney with pick 26 might be an option but would be expensive for us to move 31 to 26 - would need to give up 43 meaning our third pick would be 65 (probably not worth it unless we involve a third club somehow).

I'm more interested in how we are going to create senior list spots so we can actually use the picks we have in the national draft.

edit - unless we go crazy and try to lure GC's pick #29 using a future 1st and then upgrade #31 to Sydney's #26 using #43. Not sure it's worth it though -> future 2nd rounder to get #14, #26, #29, #65 this draft.

So for example if we could shape things to get Clark and Hill with maybe Medhat and Carter CatB? etc.....thoughts?

I don't think we should sell our chances at next year's crop of talent for this season.

I think we should absolutely look at doing it when we have academy players coming through, but I'd rather trade next year's first and the following year for another superstar player if we have a group of second rounder NGAs in the 2021 draft

Can't see how we could do that. Upgrading into a top 20 pick now seems pretty close to impossible now imo, and zero chance of top 10ish unless you have a heap of picks in the 10-20 range. We've found quality later in drafts... I think we take what we've got now to the draft - I'm assuming we'll only use 3 picks in the ND (so #43 is a pretty high last pick compared to recent drafts).

If we have ruck dominance then we don't need smart stoppage players, we just need them to execute the plan.

It will depend on how many teams play two ruckmen trying to emulate West Coast and Collingwood. I think a few will try it before realising they need contested marking ruckmen, we just stole GWSs one..

Good point............Who would you have as our essential keep ruckmen (not including Sandi)...or should I say who is to go ...Meeks, Jones, Apeness, Strnadica? ....Obviously we keep Darcy and Lobb but with Darcy a possible loss to trade. Or do we keep all until next year?

Meek and Darcy.
Jones maybe. Unfortunately Apeness has a contract for one year. Worst timed hamstring injury

I re-watched the Port match we won again this week and Jones was really good at creating a contest for the aerial ball, a better player would mark the ball and we look INFINITELY better but he has something to work with.

Apeness is arguably the best mark out of all of;
Darcy, Meek, Jones, Apeness

That's the order I'd rank them, perhaps swapping Jones and Meek because I think Jones could really contribute with a full preseason.

Agree.

Give Jones another two preseasons and he became a good replacement when Sandilands retires at the end of next year.

Meek and Apeness is the hard one to separate.

Got the same feeling about Caldwell.

Most draft people look back scratch their heads why players fell.

Also, got the same feeling about Bytel.
Yeah agree on both, especially Caldwell. From the various write-ups, I think Caldwell could become the best player from the draft (would be good to have some footage) but it is risking picking historically injury prone players.

I'll be happy enough if we got Caldwell (and/or Bytel at 31) even with the injuries.

Caldwell says me to Joel Selwood, fell to 7 from 1 due to a knee injury.

All draft picks are risks but I would do a medical report from a leading hamstring expert.

Maybe, keep all and two out of the four will be delisted/trade next year.

Strnadica has shown more Meek but he has been in the system longer. Maybe, one goes this year.

Apeness has ability but no luck with injury.

Jones shown to me that he can complete but needs to improve his fitness.

Going forward I would have 4 rucks on the list.

Darcy,Jones,Lobb and one more.

Not sure if it allowed but I would farm Meek or Strnadica to Perth or East Fremantle.

Belt the ball forward on centre bounces and blitz the ball.

No player coming off the square anymore.

I have a feeling that any of these talls we axe will kill it in the state leagues the following year and get picked up elsewhere. They don't all have great performances at once.. but they're all encroaching on each other and would shine in their own spotlights.

Even Strnadica, who I rate - I think if he's axed, will kill it in the WAFL next year.

Yes, but two are contracted and one isn't (Strnadica). If Strnadica is one of the best two of the three he should be kept, irrespective of overall contract statuses. imo. Being contracted doesn't make you better. It's just timing.
We do need to delist contract players for the upcoming draft. Currently 42 on the list. We have 4 picks need to delist at least 6.

I’m pretty sure Grey, Sutcliffe, and Sheridan will all be delisted.

That leaves 3 more cuts off the main list.
