So we have a strategy in terms of player payments, we did not break this for Buddy, we won't be breaking it for Tom Lynch will we? Tom is an extremely inferior player to Buddy, I'd be disappointed if we threw 1.2 at Tom and didn't want to throw 1.1 at Buddy. Are we really going to break all barriers for Lynch? Go completely against what we stand for ?

Yea but Buddy didn't want to be here. How many clubs have enforced that of late? Adelaide carried on about Cameron then did the deal, freo & Weller etc etc.

Like you though, not convinced we'd spend the money on 1 player!

I do have it on good authority that he hates it up there & will come home. Unless that AFL money gets ridiculous, he'll be coming back to Vic.

Nah we won't break the bank for Lynch so it won't happen, if you won't break the bank for Buddy you won't break it for anyone.

My understanding was that we chose not to match the Franklin contract because of the duration (9years) rather than the annual amount. It was also apparent that Franklin's motivation was as much cherchez la femme as much as money.
Having said that I think the strategy of buying highly paid marquee players has not been particularly successful in winning premierships and can lead to untenable pay relativities and player retention problems.
Therefore I doubt if the Hawks will offer Lynch the dollars other clubs will. However, if he is chasing a premiership where else would you go.

Does Tom just dislike the club environment or the whole GC deal? If the Suns improve under Dew, his mindset about the place and his future might completely change.

Yes, we will break the Bank one day, and we did offer Buddy around 1.1 million, but he decide to go to Sydney for more money and years.
And he also said he went to Sydney to win a flag that I'm GLAD he didn't win one.
And I also idolized Buddy.

Correct, we offered buddy 5 years and didn't wanna match the 9yrs.
On tom lynch
The salary cap has gone up 20% since.
950k - 1million a season should get him interested.
He a captain of the club ison big bucks already if money not his motivation and team success is where a big chance.
Can't see any top 8 teams or big clubs trump us buy 300k + a season.
Saints north may throw 1.5 at him but it's hard for them to secure elite talent.
Where in with a chance.

We won’t change our pay structure to suit one player.

It’s worth remembering though that if Lynch wants money he’ll stay at the Suns while the AFL line his pockets.

Tom Lynch would be an amazing pick up but there are also heaps of other talented free agents up for grabs, including Tom McDonald, Gaff and Dahlhaus. I hope we are fairly active and pursue at least two free agents next season. Also potentially offloading some of our veterans in the 27+ range for some picks in the super draft.
I’d love ya to get Dahlhaus, doubt it’d happen though.

Lynch would be an exceptional pick up but when you think about it he’s actually the least likely of the free agents available to come our way.
As others have mentioned we won’t offer any gargantuan contracts (and I don’t think we should). Beyond that he is a RFA, and GC will almost definitely match. Then we’d end up with another JOM situation where GC forces our hand to give up good picks (in a draft GW clearly doesn’t want to compromise).
We’re probably better off using free agency to add midfield depth. While I agree that younger key position talent is a hole on our list, we should stick to gunning our own players/development program.
Also, versatility in our forwards is something Hawthorn seems to value. Wouldn’t want Lynch to come in and be too much of a target.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Burto or even Big Boy get extended stints in the front end in 2018. Who knows what will happen but we’ll see...

If we're getting Lynch at the end of next season then I reckon money, years and all the other terms are pretty much already agreed on. We won't only just be now putting things into motion.

Some clubs seem to do a very opportunistic style of list management where they'll just throw whatever money they have free at any half decent player that pops up on the market. I reckon Hawthorn plays the long game the majority of the time, and we're not going to have our list management strategy dangling precariously on the whims of one player. We'd need to have some sort of in principle agreement in place.

assuming AFL don't step in and pay him outside the cap as an ambassadorial role or some shit.

There is something fishy about the AFL testing the waters by floating the possible ambassador money for Lynch during this year. They would know what every club’s salary cap looks like. And perhaps they don’t like the look of ours because it is too confronting for them. There is a good chance we have or will bank salary cap money.

Never say never I reckon.

If we were desperate to keep Bud, then I reckon we would have coughed up more.

The fact is, we had him covered, and were able to keep the whole team, including a host of other superstars inntact and well paid.

Massive difference to being desperate for a kpf and having money up our sleeve.
IF we fall down the ladder and lose our destination club status, or the players, or the coaching staff etc, we are going to have to pay over to get the marquee players.

Keep our options open, remain unpredictable, keep em guessing, even if we do stick to that mantra behind closed doors

Won't Cold Toast just match the offer and force a trade, assuming AFL don't step in and pay him outside the cap as an ambassadorial role or some shit.

Not if the AFL are handing out compensation picks like this year. If Motlop is worth 19, then he would be 2 x first rounders surely.
