So we have a strategy in terms of player payments, we did not break this for Buddy, we won't be breaking it for Tom Lynch will we? Tom is an extremely inferior player to Buddy, I'd be disappointed if we threw 1.2 at Tom and didn't want to throw 1.1 at Buddy. Are we really going to break all barriers for Lynch? Go completely against what we stand for ?

Does the cap not grow significantly next season compared to when Bud signed with Sydney?

Lynch and Gaff.

Add Tom McDonald to that list and our rebuild is complete...

And lets hope of all reports that there's no more set backs, and we see a fit and firing O'meara back to his best, before injuries, in the next few years!

All that will be left next year after our successful trade period of the above three amingos, is a long contract extension of Alastair Clarkson after winning the 2019 flag, and the start of a new era begins for the Hawks.

Can dreams come true?
Yes they can if you realize that dreams don't come true overnight while you're sleeping but takes time, effort, and patience and being completely awake and fully engaged in Clarkson we trust:);)

PS On another note imagine if all three nominate us as their club of choice, could we realistically be able to fit them all in under our salary cap?

Would rather we chase elite mids inside grunt and outside run, otherwise I fear players like Lynch will not get the supply needed to justify their lofty status. Good supply from the mids takes pressure off both ends of the ground.

The AFL will move heaven, Earth, Mars and likely most of the known universe to keep Lynch at the Gold Coast. I am not remotely expecting him to be in brown and gold come 2019.

Yep - I feel the same. Between the afl trying to help Interstate sides retain players (except Adelaide) and our salary cap pay structure i can’t see us getting too busy.

But I do think the two Adelaide free agents would suit our side very well

Not getting my hopes up for Tom Lynch nominating us. Collingwood, Carlton, Norf & others would happily pay him $1.2-1.5m a year, and its our policy not to throw ridiculous contracts at players.

Meaning we'd offer him something more modest like $800k-$1m, so firstly you'd have to ask why he'd be willing to take such a massive paycut to come to Hawthorn in the first place, and second being a restricted free agent GC would certainty match the offer, force a trade and demand two 1st round picks at the very least. Perhaps he'd be worth it too, the whole thing is certainly not impossible by any stretch but there'll be nine other Victorian clubs desperate to sign him so I'm not crazy about our chances.

Worth bearing in mind of all the recent flags won by Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney, Dogs & Richmond, only the Dogs have signed a player (Boyd) on massive coin before winning one, and we've seen them go south this year. Swans haven't won one with Buddy, nor Carlton with Judd or Geelong with Dangerflog.

Agree.
If they made Motlop worth pick 19 to grease the wheels of the Ablett deal then sky is the limit on this one. AFL Suns need to burn bright.

Dusty?

Why? What makes you so sure?
Firstly, the reason everyone is discussing Lynch is because he’s had to contend with year after year of failure, poor coaching, bad management....all within the portable offices of a shell of a club away from his hometown. It’s why people think he’ll leave.

Melbourne are no longer a complete basket case, and haven’t been for a couple of years. They’re a side climbing towards a shot at success, and McDonald has been a key figure amongst those who have helped see the slow rise of the Demons. He has no reason to leave.

And unlike Lever has no go-home factor.

No faith here in Conor Nash or Mitch Lewis. I know, but I can dream, can't I. However, I really think we will see some major improvement in one or both of these boys in 2018.
I think they're both long shots.

Our ability to produce key position players under Clarkson has been an issue for a long time I think.
Roughy and Buddy obvious wins,
Schoey was such a slow burn it didn't feel like a win.
Gilham was average,
Croad, Gibbo, Lake and Frawley needed to be traded in,
Heatherly is mad but looks unlikely
Thorp and Dowler, enough said there.
Zac Dawson. Eek.
Brand looks really promising. Really like his output for a guy of so few games
O'Brien looks to small for KPF, even though we're playing him in the ruck.
Gunston isn't really a KPF.

So if we can somehow turn Nash or Mitchell Lewis (his full name must always be said) into a leading, clunking, goal kicking forward then hell yes.

If Lynch does leave, the suns compensation pick will most likely be the pick after their first-round position. You would have to think that would be a top 10 pick in what is being touted as a very strong draft. That's assuming the AFL don't change the compensation banding. The fact that we didn't go for Shache puzzled me, but if we are targeting Lynch then it makes sense.

I like Lynch and would love to see him at the club, but for the right price. I personally think the power forwards are not as valuable as they once were, and the money would be better off spent on Dustin Martin types. The game right now allows them to thrive.

I think we need a player that is somewhere on the spectrum between Ty Vickery and Tom Lynch.

We did have discussions with Lions about Schache, but ultimately we did not have the picks or players to get a trade done.

Apart from Melbourne's very good young midfield after they have been forever rebuilding, they are lacking in many other areas, in their side like a good KPF for starters to help out an overrated Hogan as their only KP forward.

They are not a very good side, as good sides/clubs play finals and they haven't been able to do so for the last 11 years straight.

And neither will the over payed new recruit half back flanker Lever will save them unless a lot of other things change including their game style.
The problem is that they often get beaten at their own game.

Here are some intresting facts:

As impressive as a tally of 71.8 tackles a game second-best in the competition was, they were actually tackled 73.6 times a game. Some teams are capable of absorbing this pressure, but Melbourne’s disposal efficiency was the league’s fifth-worst.

For a team ranked first in handballs and only 13th in kicks, that is worrying.

It was just another season of missed opportunity and masive disappointment for Melbourne this year.
heading into the final round of the year, which all they just had to do is beat a depleted Collingwood to book their first September appearance since 2006 and what happened ones again they failed to do so and missed the top eight.

They are only one more failure away to make the eight and get close to winning the flag next year before players like FA Tom McDonald start thinking about moving to another club especially when a back flanker in Lever doesn't have a very good year and is getting payed more then other players are..

I agree with this as well! No good home grown key defenders, well hopefully Brand will become a very good player.
We recruited a few bust key defenders who were too small. E.g. Jordan Kelly, Jarrad Boumann, Andrew Boseley, Stephen Gilham.
I felt that we should have gotten Kieren Collins instead of Kieren Lovell in the draft a few years back. I feel that Shoey is the luckiest player to remain on an AFL list.

We had futures, and the Bulldogs got him at a steal
"A steal" in that Brisbane may have made off like bandits? Because that could very well be the case. The reality is that there was a tonne of risk with Schache. We can only know in hindsight if the Schache risk would've paid off. But of course we don't get to operate with the benefit of hindsight. I'm content that the club have made the right call in holding on to our 2018 first rounder.
