I don't like the Swans one as from a distance it's just going to be very baby pink bit in the middle. The key to designing these jumpers which I think our club has got right every year is that it has to look good close up and then look good from a long distance. That second part is where I think the Swans jumper will really fall down as it will be red and pink with a black swan ala the WA logo from years ago (red and pink are two colours you don't put together).

Ha! Cheers. Yeah, am a little terrified of how cold it might be. Am foolishly taking my kids for their first taste of AFL footy too, so it's going to make for an interesting footy going experience... the Crows better win.
I will certainly be hoping so too.

So far this year hasn't been as brutal as 2017. To this date in 2017 we'd already had one night below -4C. The coldest so far this year was Sunday morning, when it hit -0.1C. Last year was one of Canberra's warmest and coldest on record, with a ridiculous 81 nights below zero. I believe the average is closer to 30.

June & July are the worst months, but things don't usually warm up until mid-September.

The days are usually nice - clear blue skies, lots of sunshine. It's just not terribly warm - 11-13C is normal, and anything above 13 is rare. The temperature plummets at night, particularly if there's no cloud cover to act as a thermal blanket and keeping the heat in.

Rug up nice and warm. Make sure your kids have beanies, to keep their heads warm. Gloves are not a bad idea either, but beanies are a must.

Anyone ever been to Manuka Oval? Heading over for the GWS game later this year and was hoping to get undercover seats given it will be Canberra in the depths of winter and bugger sitting out in the elements. Are all the stands under cover or only on the wings? I can't picture it...

Edit: just found a seating chart. Any tips still greatly appreciated.

It can get bitterly cold out there in Canberra. Wear thermals even if the weather appears to be fine, the wind is chilling. The oval is in obviously Manuka so there is plenty of decent restaurants there, but book in advance.

Legends Restaurant has great food, but expensive. Worth it.

If you go there, please tag me.

Only one game for Hawkins - be nice to play for a vic team.

edit:

Would be nice to be able to decide your punishment too.

Soft penalty.

If it was 2-3 games, players would never make that kind of stupid mistake again.

I suggest Bambusa as the restaurant to try: I go there all the time. Agree on the cold. It's absolutely stupid to schedule night matches at Manuka in winter. The day matches earlier this year have been fantastic: very comfortable. I'll be there in August, but won't hold too many hopes. GWS play much better at Manuka than anywhere else. Actually, I went to the last match AFC played in Canberra and we lost: I can't remember too much about the game except that my favourite Burton was playing!

If you're trying to stamp out dangerous tackles leading to concussion then Nic Nat fits the bill imo.

Obviously meant to drive him into the turf and with the massive size difference it was always going to make his head vulnerable. NN is an athletic monster of a man.

Agreed. Not for the first time he was trying to rattle, if not outright hurt the opposition player

He has a duty of care. Needs to be stopped before it gets out of hand

Canberra gets almost 50 percent more rain in summer than winter. Rug up though.

...
I value a lot of your posting but predicting 'terminal decline' is you indulging your regular vice of 'calling it' on a player's career based on little more than playing the odds.
Yep agree.

Old player will get worse!

Rookie won’t make it!

Play the odds. No insight.

That said, I tend to agree Eddie is starting to look a bit cooked, and I worry about the long term contract.

They were helping him. It's a bit of a "fake news" headline it seems, his original contract was up, they chose not to renew it thinking he hadn't done a great job in his role. They're painting it as he just stopped turning up to work or something.

If I ****ed up my whole life on meth and ended up in jail, I doubt my old boss would hire me back. Footballers these days are wrapped in cotton wool and given endless second chances. This is the complete lack of accountability you expect from a boys club. It's embarrassing.

But if your old boss had a duty of care to you and then turned a blind eye for his own personal gain at the expense of your well being... ?

West Coast have a lot to answer for in this case. Not suggesting for one moment that Ben isn’t responsible for his own actions. But West Coast were happy to let him become what he is today as long as they were getting premierships and dominating the league.

Text book case of failure in duty of care.

Don’t forget he came to them as a kid.

What about personal responsibility? I don't think Woosha held the glass pipe up to his mouth.

Ok. But these organisations are given the responsibility of taking in vulnerable 18 year olds that get fame, fortune and all the trappings. As soon as his personal health is in danger, what he can do for them as a footballer stops. Then it’s about what they can do for him. If they can’t, boot him out the door and stop enabling him. Don’t just milk him for his talents.

I am not taking away any personal responsibility. I am saying what I think a clubs responsibility is. Health of the player first. Especially if you draft them as 18 year olds.

You think they didn't know of his possible amphetamine use while he was winning premierships with them?

Oh they knew all about it. Not doubting that. I just think a person needs to take responsibility for their own actions and not look to their employer to life lessons. I don't buy into this idea that footy clubs should be defacto parent figures who are responsible for moulding their players identities.

Yeah the squiggle is a load of shit

It's funny how the AFC keep proving the squiggle wrong every year, yet people keep flocking back to it every year in the hope that it's right.

Eh it's pretty solid as long as you understand it's a predictive model, and not set in stone gospel. It is always possible for the weaker of the two teams to win.

It's an overall trend downwards. There will be the occasional spike, where he has a good game, but on average he's not performing anywhere near as well now as he was 18 months ago. One game is not a trend, 21 games over 11 months is a trend/slump/decline.
I have always appreciated your ability to make accurate calls on our players * ** ***.

Nevertheless, with respect, I would like to make the following points.
- Until the dramatic 1 disposal per game decline in Eddie’s output, he was considered one of the best small forwards in the history of the AFL and has been named as the All Australian small forward for the last three years
- Our forward structure is evolving with less expectations on Jenkins and Eddie to kick the goals.
- Eddie has had to cope with injury in recent times but he is still a tad more durable than young Brouch.

One factor, IMHO, is that he has lost some power in his kicking which means he must play close to goal or give more goals off. What comforts me is that he continues to win one-on-ones and create goals from nothing (e.g. his intercept and chip pass to JJ on Saturday).

So far this season various posters have written off Jenkins, Betts, Lynch, Tex, McGovern, Sloane, Brouch, Atkins, Seedsman and Talia. We must be really struggling .

* “Seedsman has never been and never will be in our best 22”
** “CEY will be delisted at the end of 2017 and never play another game of AFL”
*** “Petrenko is not an AFL footballer and will never, ever play 50 games of AFL”
etc
etc
etc

Mumford "disguised" it for years and got away with it. No need to fall on top of your opponent in that fashion, its really dangerous.
