True, but at what age are they doing that?
So Basically the way the private school scholarship system works is that kids who are playing well locally at around year 7 -9 will get scouted by Private schools there are a few distinctions however. The more prestigious private schools are with in the APS competition. Don;t hate me for using this language but this is how it is. So These schools are Haileybury,Carey, Xavier, Scotch, Melbourne and Caulfield Grammar, Geelong Grammar Geelong College, Wesley, Brighton I may have missed one.

Now some kids although rarely are there from the start of high school with no scholarship but 90 per cent are on what they call 'General excellence' Some kids go to independant private schools which are not quite as prestigious. Such as Marcellin, Assumption, Trinity etc.

As a point of interest these are the players at the Saints who were at Private school probably on scholarships.

Nathan Freeman Haileybury
Jack Billings Scotch
Jack Newnes Marcellin ( Not APS)
Ben Long Melbourne Grammar
Hugh Goddard Melbourne Grammar
Josh Battle Haileybury
Ed Phillips Caulfield Grammar
Paddy McCartin Geelong Grammar
Jack Sinclair Scotch College
Daniel McKenzie Caulfield Grammar
Oscar Clavarino Halieybury
Lewis Pierce Haileybury

The age they take them depends on the school and numbers vary.

Plenty get taken from year 7 on general scholarships some will be talented athletes and get a sports scholarship. Yet more get offers at year 9, some schools hardly have a fee paying kid on the team by year 12.

Their not stupid though if they think your not cut from right cloth you won’t get in or if you do and foul up they show you the door.

There’s so much talent out there that doesn’t fit the profile or blooms late that it’s a bloody scandal really.

I mean look at the championships, most of those kids look like men. Say what you want but that’s a huge advantage at junior level. I just don’t believe that if you’re not a man at 17 you’ll never make it in the afl.

I remember when clubs had u/19s, reserves and seniors plenty of great players who would never be picked up today were slow burners.

The afl has become very difficult to break into for kids who don’t fit the profile. Which is unbelievable to me given the numbers we employ and the money their on to work in recruiting.

Exactly. And this is probably why the skills AFL-wide have not improved over all these years. Overlooking potential guns because they didn't get a scholarship to the right school when they were 14yo. FMD.

Mid teens?... Melbourne High & MacRob Girls target smart kids to pump up their year 12 results from year 7-8 onwards.
Those school are select state schools and only start at Year 9. You need to pass an entrance exam to get in and be in the top handful of the kids at your school to get into the school. So they take kids from all over the state.

About a third of NFL players were undrafted.

Now when you take into account the age at which they draft players what the hell does it say about a league where your on the scrapheap at 18.

I’m not advocating ignoring the draft just expanding where we recruit from. We try in the sense that we have Irish kids etc but we have to loose this ridiculous bias about kids from outside the system.

My local boy!!!

These Richmond folk must be new here; every BigFooty board is plundered for its player and coach movement rumours. There’s been a countless number of times where a rumour is floated here then a Jay Clark type pops up and starts parroting it verbatim.

Perhaps we should give them the benefit of the doubt, though. Richmond’s BigFooty board has been irrelevant since the website’s inception, for anything other than observing melts, so this must be one of their first exposures to the Journos’ pilfering of gossip.

Did the tweet get deleted? Not coming up for me.
Nothing too exciting.

Just the Tigers BF twitter nailing Waldron for copying word for word an ITK poster on their board and passing it off as his own info. Allegedly.

Up until this morning i had been in the camp of keeping billings at all costs but even i have started to waiver.

If methendon offer us their 2018 1st with a swap of 2019 2nds I'd just about take it. A fresh start might do the kid good. He's shot at the moment. Sad coz he is a talent

I'm probably just speaking out of frustration. In 47 years I've never felt this deflated about our club

I clicked on the tweet and read the whole thing, turns out the Richmond bloke actually coiped Brian. I think anyway

Dunstan
Longer
Gilbert
Lonie
Armo
Acres
Billings

All on the table IMO for the right price.

Would rather take a punt on a kid at pick 70 TBH.
Arces and Billings only 2 who might get us something
