Entirely predictable.

This is a particularly fun one because whatever they think they can get from us immediately becomes the starting point for Hogan and consequently Steven May.

While this could be a quick deal (4 and 22) it will take at least until early in the last week to finish up.

Rosich was very obstinate and bristled when it came to the suggestion of losing Lachie Neale and he pointed out Neale was contracted. Although Terry Wallace actually pulled out the question I was hoping but not hopeful would be asked ie. Hey Steve you are quite willing to talk about Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb coming to your club when they are both contracted for next year but not so much with one of your own players.

Rosich- umm yeer oh yer that's a good question Terry.....waffle waffle waffle...

I think if the AFL are serious about the integrity of the draft then they need to clamp down on players seeking a trade inside their first two years. While there will always be exceptions, for example, on genuine compassionate grounds where a change of family circumstances has occurred, the idea that a player can seek to return to his home state just to be close to family really is a cop out. In Kelly's case, he wasn't an immature 18 year old kid when drafted and he knew what he was getting himself into. His wife and three kids came with him. They don't like living in Geelong, plenty probably wouldn't. But the Cats gave him his chance in the big time and the AFL should make him serve out his contract. They have the power to refuse any trade but they also need to start enforcing the draft rules - two year minimum contracts are there to protect the interests of both player and club. Neither side should be able to tear it up at its discretion.

Why though? Geelong have flipped him in 12 months from a rookie selection to a top 10 pick, take the trade value and move on. People need to detach from this whole notion of absolute player loyalty, it exists where the culture is good, regulating or forcing people to contracts or making more rules to restrict player movement is backward. Even if you did the 'genuine compassionate grounds' - who decides what is bad enough to warrant breaking a contract? is Dad having Cancer bad enough? what about an Uncle having Cancer, is that bad enough, how close tot he uncle do you have to be? it would be farcical to try an implement that and players and managers would abuse it... also.. does the AFL disclose the personal reasons they granted the right for a player to break the contract? How many other times has this occurred? Geelong come out of this winners, they have used the state system to create a top 10 pick in 12 months, it's a master stroke by them and the Eagles should be annoyed he as sitting under their nose for so long and they now have to fork out for him. we need to come to terms with the fact players are commodities.. we follow the team, you get players each season and you lose them, it's how you flip them and make the most of their value on the way in and out.

He wasn’t a rookie selection- he was an early 2nd round draft pick

My gripe with the Kelly thing is more about putting some rigour back into the system. Not really interested in whether the club or player get a good outcome.

Trade Talk: Rosich said the Dockers were yet to decide whether to open negotiations with Melbourne for Hogan and expect to make a call "by early next week".
i.e. about when Neale makes his move public.

Rosich come across as a smarmy, hypocritical posturing type of CEO. Fits the Freo prototype to a tee. Compare him to the Melbourne's General Manager Josh Mahoney's honest and grounded interview.

What rigour specifically? enforcing bandaid solution rules (that are impossible to implement) around player movement that harks back to a time where player loyalty was viewed absolute, to appease fans who suffer emotionally from player departures? It will never happen, players will just find a way around it and it flys in the face of everything else that modern society offer people with the living circumstances and employment. Maybe make rookie contracts 3 years but even that is just a restrictive measure that hopelessly fights the tide of increased player movement. All I know is.. there is no way they can set up a process to determine whether a personal circumstance warrants breaking a contract.. can you imagine that LOL!!

To be fair we have made some dumb statements in the past too - look at Leigh saying Aish won't be traded!

But I think the leadership there is under serious pressure (especially Ross) and the fact that they were able to fleece Gold Coast last year is going to make them very very publicly obstinate. If we get them Hogan and they keep their future first, that is a win for them.

Any suggestions re splitting picks as suggested by David Noble earlier this week?

On top of possibly splitting our pick/s this year I would love to trade our first next year for one of the Suns picks, one of- 2, 3 + another highish pick for May.

Port will more than likely end up with 9 & 10(Polec) + Maybe another for Wingard.
Crows have 7, 15, 19.

These picks will move down at least one spot because of Lynch compo.

Gee a loss to the Suns late in the year leaving us with pick 2 would have come in handy on the trade table this trade period.

The Suns will be able to ream the Adelaide clubs this trade period with picks 2&3 if they feel the inclination.

Sorry for the bad news guys, as you've heard/read, Rosich says Neale is staying. Clearly he is announcing his decision after the Doig because he wants to drop it 'Wolf of Wall Street Style'

You can have Sheridan for pick 5 though :drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk:
