My sentiments exactly Tazza.

However there’s one thing I’m still not happy with is how we still allow player managers to leak out our contract offers. We need to somehow control this better, because as long as these big contract offers play out in the media the less likely we are to get pen to paper on a big fish.

You never hear in detail about the Hawks offers until after the fact.
We need to change our approach.
The issue with that is whilst every player manager knows we’ve frontloaded the shit out of our contracts, they will leak our deals and always try and get a better figure - not cause they care about said player but so that extra zero gets added to next months commission statement.

We are pawns

Hasn't changed. Natural progression along with Hall and Polec will get us there.
There’s always a silver lining.

More money to throw at Kelly or a new target. More salary room for natural improvers like froggy/Ahern/LDU etc.

Gaff would have been great, but shit happens. If spineless keyboard warriors want to rip into us for having a crack, good luck to them, we’ve survived worse ridicule and came out stronger 10 years later.

Up front, I'd like to say that I certainly appreciate the posting by yourself and others on this matter. The backflip was always a possibility, but seemed unlikely until it happened.

What I don't get is, if he told us on Thursday when he flew over, why wasn't it public until today? (side note: along with Snake and a small number of others, I was extremely nervous when I found out he made that flying visit)

It also begs the question as to why did he go through the charade of the carefully worded, non-committal speech at their B&F.

Everything points to him back-flipping after the B&F, with the small but contradictory detail that he visited Melbourne the day before the B&F.

I assume West Coast upped their offer once Lycett was official, he made the decision/backflip to stay and flew over today to inform us.

I said at the start of year that finishing mid-table and throwing Hail Mary offers is not a proper list build strategy.

The things I want to know before making a judgement now:

-Has Gaff officially signed with WC?
-More important: have we made even a single contractual decision about our list on the assumption Gaff was joining North?
Who knows.
Gaff reneging on the deal is one thing.
How much Jed, Jacobs, Thompson, etc were front ended and whether Declan stayed on was affected by this and I’ll be ****in howling.
The flurry of signings/delistings on Thursday/Friday if made with the presumption of A.Gaff on the list is a belly up of gigantic proportions.

Surely our list management isn't that stupid.

Yes and you are not going to like the answer.

Any football staff member who made such decisions is negligent and should not be trusted further to hold such a role. Immediate Hari Kiri of their role. I'm serious, in no industry or mode of life should you get away with such recklessness.

That's before we even start on the extremely unsavoury personal impact this has had on any players who were delisted under this false pretence.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that visit was to the Parents to say I think I have changed my mind. I am not sure. Wat do u think?

Son it’s up to you

Goes to b&f, love ya Gaff, hope you stay, love u mate, hope you stay to 3am

Should be giving Clarke a 2 year deal, even before gaff comin I wanted to keep ry

Now just reinforces it to keep him
And must play wing, not this bullshit experiment with him in defense.

I think half the Gaff family are currently pro Fatwah for the time being. They're as baffled as we are.

From a West Coast point of view, it is good for them that he is staying loyal.

However living so far away, when there are serious family health issues in existence, is not a nice place to be. Hopefully his father is 100% okay but the Gaffster will also have to continue to deal with the late night/early morning telephone calls that might confront him in the future.

This.

If true then it has essentially cost a player or players their livelihood.

Makes sense that it happened today. The Thursday trip was probably to visit family and say he was ready to come to North. The emotion of Friday night appears to have got to him.

At least we'll re-rookie him, I doubt Freo would bother with him.

I think this will probably be the case. It wasn't all Gaff btw, but it was a factor.
