They certainly do..but we are likely to have plenty of cap space and i am in the boat that i would be happy to keep him. We need to use that as a threat if there is even the slightest chance the dogs will try that route

If we had the cap space and were prepared to offer it to him, we would. And he wants us to, so he would accept. He would never make it to the PSD.

Totally agree here, we need to make Carlton pay for Betts here, we cant be paying any significant portion of his salary.

You could even argue, if he wants to get to Carlton that badly and they want him he either stays here or takes a pay cut where we dont pay anything.

A line in the sand needs to be drawn.

There is a time for a line in the sand, and this isn't it.

I'd actually argue we're better off paying all of Betts salary considering how much we're getting off our books, just to make it easier to hit the salary cap floor next season (which right now, we're likely to be a million short off) providing it was a one year contract. Makes it much easier to attract a Luko/Grundy (and I'd rather Luko by a wide margin) whilst keeping as close as possible to that floor for 2021. We'll still have a bit to splash around to tie up some long terms talents as well.

A line in the sand only has an impact if it's a star. Right now, doing anything to increase the chance of us keeping Betts is one of the worst things this club could do in this situation which completely destroys anything that could be gained from this decision.

Fair call..just want to make sure he doesn't fall ibto the bargain basement transfer bin

me too. Especially as I see us firmly in a rebuild. I don’t see us burning through cap space with a young list. I don’t want to keep players that block the development of young players. Keath I’m happy to let go, but it’s not urgent. Especially next year. I’d rather get rid of some older players that are blocking guys like Scholl, Hamill and Gallucci if we are talking next season. Don’t think Butts is ready for 2020 anyway, but still hope to see him with 5-10 games.

Here is some bs of the Dogs posters on their board re:Keath

Trading pick 13 will be an option right til the last bell. Bruce and Keath aren’t going anywhere. No need for hand wringing because we haven’t paid top dollar immediately.

Worst case scenario is that we trade 13 and get both of them. That’s an amazing worst case scenario. But there’s no reason not to take our time and see if we can do the deals cheaper.
Similar to the Kelly deal making WC so much stronger, the Keath/Bruce deal makes the Bullies contenders. You sacrifice your 1st rounder for ready made players rather than waiting to develop 2 kids from those picks

Idea stolen from Crowcast

The money that WB are offering Keath is higher than what Saints are offering Dougal Howard isn’t it? If push came to shove I’d rather give up a pick in the 20s for Howard and take a haircut on the pick that WB give us for Keath if that were an option. We should have the cap space to match the Saints offer to Howard.

I wouldnt say you stole it, its fairly common understanding that when you are in a premiership window so to speak or enter one, you do have to go harder and pay more for certain players that can and do make you genuine contenders.

Dogs with those two players puts them right up there.

Not sure we need a reincarnation of Dmac on our list, especially while the first edition is still there.
All about the cost. If it’s a salary dump we could do a pretty cheap trade.

He may not have lived up to his draft pick but he’s been solid enough and only 24. Coming off 2 decent years - Could be useful.

Im not opposed if it’s bargain basement purchase.

Problem is the bulldogs want more than us to just take a hair cut they want us to shave it all off and then some

I hope Reid learns something from this type of negotiating. Clubs will only give us what they want unless we bend over. This is what he should have been like n the Gibbs trade.
Do mean the Reid that got overs in the McGovern, Cameron and Lever trades?

Overs for Cameron ?

Compared to that point in time, Reid got overs for Cameron, who was purely a defensive forward with some x-factor in our setup, and not looking like he'll be anything but seeing he didn't have that flash of a 2017 season (got saved by downhill skiing in a preliminary final, but had a bit of a step back year all things considered, though, I'm not going to be too harsh on that as he was in what could be a suffocating role out of necessity).

That said, overall credit does have to go to Brisbane. They saw a need/potential to develop him into something else, didn't balk at paying overs to get him across and are now having it pay off in a good fashion.

Ended up a bit of a win/win all things considered, seeing we ended up getting Fogarty out of it who looks like developing into the figurehead of our forward line for the next decade, as well as having the potential to be one of if not the best player at this club in the mid term.

If keath says he wanted to play at Adelaide but our offer isn't good enough

Why the hell would we match the bulldogs offer in the PSD

I don’t think a player automatically goes into the PSD if a trade doesn’t get done by Wednesday. As Justin Reid said, he’s still a contracted player with the AFC until 31st of October (hence why we had to pay the $$ for his recent surgery.

We can elect to offer him a better contract before he elects for the PSD.

Firstly I would say a trade is more likely to happen than not, but if it doesn’t, we should put a slightly better contract in front of him, I doubt he’d want to experience the lottery of the PSD

The other option is to threaten that we'll take him in PSD as we have a pick prior to WB.

Not an option I'm a huge fan of mind you, but it may work as a hollow threat.

Simply 4 and Jacobs for 6 and Hately no need for any other swapping, if not Hately then their 2020 1st instead.

Pretty simple deal.
Hately would make this trade period a serious win, points wise he would almost be equivalent to all of Greenwood, Keath, CEY, Douglas, Otten, Hunter, Jenkins, Betts and Jacobs ,

Pick 6 and Hately vs Pick 9 and Stocker you would have to be content with that.

Yup, pick 6 and a likely decade + midfielder who may lack star power (size could see him develop it though), but offers a few point of differences to the rest of the midfield is hard to argue with. Even if we downgraded our second or third to GWS equivalent, I'd still be happy.

Then you can go with another top line midfielder with pick 6 and really get the refresh rolling.

A midfield line next year of ROB feeding Crouches/Sloane/Milera/Hately/Jones/Gallucci/McHenry+ one or two more rotations has a bit there to be a pretty powerful unit.
