Friday double header can have second game as a true night game in perth for a derby. Fox only game historically.
They're not going to do that. AFL isn't going to start a match that will finish after midnight. It's totally uneccesary.

My solution would be to have Essendon v Hawthorn (mcg) and Sydney v Port Adelaide (scg) as the 2 Sunday games. This ensures all venues are available to host regardless of which teams make it.

Schedule home games for all competing clubs (derbies in Perth and Brisbane) so all supporters can make the game.

^ remarkable record. I wonder what the Fitzroy/Brisbane record is? Might find it's the oldest of the lot.

Had a bit more of a play around today and found the 10 oldest record crowds for all matchups between Vic teams. For the purposes of this stat I've included Sydney & South Melb as one entity and Fitzroy & Brisbane together as well.

That Melbourne / North Melbourne record being just 36k and yet standing for nearly 60 years sticks out like a sore thumb.

Full list of all matchups:

  • Melbourne is comfortably the club with the oldest standing records overall with half of them dating back earlier than 1965. Hawthorn and St Kilda the ones whose records are most modern.
  • Sydney have yet to better South Melbourne's record against Carlton, while Brisbane is yet to top Fitzroy's records against Carlton, Essendon, Geelong and Richmond.

Im a big fan of extending the season and having the GF on good friday

Problem with that is that Easter shifts around several weeks. Presumably the aflw will settle around the solar/Gregorian calendar rather than the lunar one

It's going to be interesting "where it lands" as they say at AFL house. There seem to be people pushing for

-finishing in September
-starting in September
-pushing back into summer
-expanding further into the AFL season

Im for starting in November and have a break at Xmas resume mid Jan and finish before the AFL season starts in March That would free up about 14 - 15 weeks.

Agree. The AFLW grand final should be the weekend before the AFL starts, would get clear air that way.

To allow this start around 10 Jan or if a longer season is desired have 4-5 rounds pre Xmas like you said and then resume mid Jan

Well you two are pretty much on the same page!

The short term challenges with this is that it wouldn't offer much to foxtel / 7. Also a lot of the whinging noise is already focused on making the women play in summer

Something has to give with 14 teams and the girls wanting more games, so going more into summer or more into the AFL season, or even a bit of both, something has to give.

The solution might be staring us in the face:
- Summer is hot
- both Fox and FTA like mid-week games
- put most of the season on during the school holidays and utilise every single mid-week evening (the game is short, so a 7:30 pm start finishes around 9pm anyway). Point of difference, give the networks some value. Yes, it will be up against BBL, but so what, not everyone watches cricket.

Also, given the shorter game, work in more 4 and 5 day gaps between games, don't be restricted by the concept of one round per week, think more along the lines of 4 completed rounds every 15 to 18 days.

The fact of the matter is, there isn't enough room realistically for all 9 AFL games to be standalone, otherwise the AFL would have done it by now (and are trying as much as possible). Add in 6,7,8,9 AFLW games and (in the future) 9 AFL reserves games, and the week becomes quite full.

Thats when you have to spread games over Thursdy now and Monday in the future.

So 675K for metro FTA last night plus 248K on foxtel

923K all up and a moral for the 5th (out of 5) prime time million plus ratings for the season

I reckon it's ok. Expectations were a bit excessive given both teams had very dissapointing starts
Agree. Before the MCC came out with 58,000 I was thinking between 50-55,000. And that’s about right given the form line of both teams and previous matches between the two clubs not firing.

So 603k on FTA last night. Top non news again and Winx like odds for another 1million plus (6 from 6 for prime time this year) including fox and regionals

Round 3 was comm games start last year so the ratings uptick will accelerate

Tonight the national ratings may go close best Saturday night under the current deal if the games are competitive

Maybe I've gone too early on the million!

Need 209k on foxtel....would be unusual not to get that
