Jack Maibaum: There are some on here who will be saying he's an automatic delist. Has not played senior footy after 3 years on the list. Well I think he would have played this year had he not done his knee. I would persevere with him. Reg took time to develop too and look how good he was. There is plenty of upside with this bloke. He is cool with the ball. A very good mark. Opponents do not score much on him. Who has he played against? Patton, Hipwood, Close, Tomlinson, Himmelberg, Day, Lynch, Darren Ewing (NT Thunder FF & winner of leading goalkicker in the NEAFL most years). So just a few good players there. Thr thing is he has either held his own or beaten them all.

I agree with most of your post but especially agree with this one.:thumbsu:

😉
I just think the modern game requires players to play roles rather than positions. Using Rampe as an example, I can see him thriving in the midfield if we can cover him in defence. Similarly, The Gong makes a great point about giving him the third forward.

When we play Geelong, I’d love to see Rampe up against Dangerfield....

So what would you do with Reid?

If McCartin needs time to develop as a defender am I crazy in thinking Reid could play as a fullback? He's certainly been effective when swung back. He's got the height, pretty good mobility and good intercept mark.

Depends if the Daniher trade is legit or not.

This crap about being bent over in trades is just that. Crap.

Ollie Florent stacks up pretty well in my opinion as compared with the draft picks above him in 2016.

But much more than that, we're trading humans, not cattle. If a player wants to go, let them go. Try to get the best deal you can without looking like Carlton, Collingwood or Essendon.

Focus on the players you have and fostering an environment for success.
Who would you prefer, Ollie or Mitchell? Ollie is good but Mitchell is twice the player. You can put lipstick on a pig all you want but that was a terrible trade. No if's or but's about it.

Why can’t we just keep Papley?

Agreed. Miss out on Daniher this year and get him for free next year. Alternatively, offer next year first pick for Daniher and their second round pick next year. Take a 2020 pick for Jones and we would still have enough for Gulden and Campbell.

Player for player......Mitchell.

But that isn’t the equation. So much more comes into it. Including the collective culture of 40 odd young men.

Mitchell didn’t see eye to eye with Horse. It happens.

If Papley goes (still think he’ll stay) and Daniher comes in (yes please) I can see the following positional transitions happening over the next few seasons:

Reid and McCartin spending more time in the backs and Buddy on the wing.

Rampe and Mills spending more time in the middle. I see Rampe as Kennedy’s natural successor.

And Parker spending more time in the forwards. He will have a field day against the opposition’s third defender every time.

The point I’m trying to make is a lot of our solutions can be found within.
The club would have loved to have been able to move him into the midfield a few years ago but never got the opportunity. He's too old for that change now and will see his days out in the backline.

Where did the club indicate they wanted to move him to the midfield? I've never seen anything about that.

Swingman. 😀

He’ll never be as tough as our old nemesis Adam Hunter, but I think he has an important role to take tall defenders away from Buddy (or Daniher). Always liked how Horse moves him back as a spare defender when opposition teams get a roll on or towards the end of quarters. Noticed McCartin ‘learning’ this role this season.

Reid can also enable our ruckman to position forward or defence by taking the boundary throwins. He’ll never win lots of hit outs but just compete to get it to ground for our midfielders to do their job.

I think you need a good number of talls over a season, hence I’m keen to get Daniher and can live with Papley leaving, as much as I love him.

"Sources at the Swans have confirmed to The Age that Sydney’s targeting of Daniher has been months in the making, driven by coach John Longmire, who is one of Daniher’s biggest fans"

I'd love to k ow who these "sources" are

Private convo with someone on the staff back then.

He'll probably re-sign now I've said there but there's way too much smoke for this to not be fire.
He doesn't have to re-sign as he is already contracted for next year. Essendon have already stated that they have not offered him an extension of his contract beyond next year.
