Of all the concept games Country game is probably last on the list but no issue for round 1 , change it to Essendon v Hawks Saturday night , Melbourne v Geelong Sunday !!
Yeah, still think it'll be an interstate trip.

Not gonna happen. The AFL wont forgo a potential 70-80k crowd for a 30k one.
R2 v Hawthorn [Easter Monday]: 73189 (Geelong Home Game)
R8 v Colingwood: 44602 (Collingwood Home Game)
R9 v Essendon: 50228 (Essendon Home Game)
R13 v Richmond: 46423 (Geelong Home Game)
R20 v Richmond: 67054 (Richmond Home Game)
R21 Hawthorn: 59529 (Hawthorn Home Game)

Stats for 2018. Not seeing a very compelling reason outside of Easter Monday (which Hawks can host every year) for Geelong to not host the "big 4"?

Half of those crowds would fit in Docklands, and arguably R21 too.

To justify moving a Geelong home game from KP to the MCG, the crowd would need to be at least 60k +.

Easter Monday should always achieve this but the Richmond crowd was pretty disappointing !!

Would love to see West Coast first game of the season. If we learnt anything this year it was how great it was to see Richmond unfurl the flag the first game. It puts an end to them being premiers and the 2018 season and begins a new season.

For the Blues ;

1. Good Friday v Nth Melb.
2. QB w/e v Essendon
3. Traditional Saturday afternoon v Collingwood early in the season

We tend to alternate round 1 at home with Freo . We had the round 1 Optus Stadium opener this year so I’m only expecting our first home game in round 2 this year . And that’s fine with me .

We haven’t doubled up against WC since 2009
We have tended to alternate years, so if we don’t double up (good chance of a double up because we’re in the same bracket ), it should be Richmond’s home game this time . I just hope the game is at the MCG and not Etihad!!!

To play Gold Coast on a Saturday night at Metricon then Brisbane the following week during the day on Saturday maybe late June early July to get out of the cold of Melbourne just do me fine

90,151 at the opening round this year begs to differ.

what about the 1 million people at home who turn off when they realise its Carlton playing?
You could have Richmond v Collingwood open it, would be far more interesting.
At the moment, the opener is a dud for most of us.
Why two clubs have an eternal monopoly on the opener is beyond me.

Let's go back a bit further than just this season to get a reasonable sample size...

Geelong v Collingwood @ MCG
2018, Round 8: 44,602
2017, Round 22: 47,889
2017, Round 6: 46,457
2016, Round 9: 59,864
2015, Round 6: 52,152
2015, Round 22: 40,582

Geelong v Hawthorn @ MCG
2018, Round 21: 59,529
2018, Round 2: 73,189
2017, Round 4: 62,360
2017, Round 17: 70,345
2016, Round 1: 74,218
2015, Round 20: 55,802
2015, Round 1: 73,584

Geelong v Richmond @ MCG
2018, Round 20: 67,054
2018, Round 13: 46,423
(played at Kardinia in 2017)
2016, Round 21: 45,667
2015, Round 5: 45,228

Geelong v Essendon @ MCG
2018, Round 9: 50,228
2017, Round 8: 57,173
2016, Round 4: 42,723

I can't see a demonstrable reason for Geelong to hold all matches at Kardinia Park based on the above. Hawthorn v Geelong should always be at the MCG and it's hard to mount an argument that Collingwood should play down there either.

I'd be happy for Geelong to host both/all 3 of their pre-season games at Kardinia Park against those clubs as an off-set but I can't see the worth in the big clubs playing at Kardinia during the season when you're locking out at minimum 10,000 fans or more in most cases.

If the capacity increases to around 40k, maybe that gets a re-think.

For a start, 1 million people don't turn off. In fact quite the opposite, 1.137 million tuned into the opener across 7 Network & FOX this year.

While I'd love RIC-COL to open the season, I don't think it's a good idea - you want matches like that played when players are at the peak of their powers. That's why Richmond-Carlton is a good opener, it's a good crowd-puller but it's not a "classic match" in the same sense RIC-COL or GEE-HAW would be.

Its a dud mate. You can pull out all the stats & stuff, thats all beautiful.
But they dont deserve a monopoly on the opener for eternity.
Vic clubs have Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Queens Birthday, no problem with that.
But its a national comp, not the bloody VFL. Be more interesting mixing the opener up each year.

Can't see any logical reason why the "big 4" can't come down the highway, no different to an interstate game.

This.

I still recon they should have one a year like that (rotating the big 3/4/whatever the number) though, where the normal season seat allication does not apply and perhaps get a bit more of an even crowd. Would be a good "marquee game" to look forward to each year. It would be in addition to the nine KP games so members don't really lose out too much.

Not having to travel to all parts of the country...
But with our crap performances of late I would be amazed if we didnt have to travel one of either Hobart, Launceston, Darwin, Cairns, Ballarat, Canberra or Alice Springs.

1. Get rid of the NT deal (sell it to someone who needs it like STK).
2. Many more Fri and Sat night games.
3. Haven't played a game in NSW/ACT in so long, due for one (wouldn't mind going up to an away game).
4. We're due for WCE and/or FREM at the MCG.
5. Best possible double ups would probably be something like: 2 x Coll, Syd, NM, Ess & GC.

So it's the vibe? It's Mabo? The constitution?

They're not going to make business decisions like who opens the season based on feelings or that someone thinks it'd be more interesting to mix it up each year.

I hate Richmond and I hate Carlton but it's a successful opening game each year. It pulls big crowds, big ratings. And moreover, why waste a big-name clash involving other clubs on Round 1 when it'll be a relatively rubbish match?

Righto.
