Sure not at any cost though. Remember the cost is not just the player but how it would affect the team. Breust is a player hard to replace. A small forward of his caliber don't come along every day.

Don't get me wrong I wanted Whitfield before Coniglio
Yeah i'm not throwing up any names in particular and definitely not trying to suggest we should move on Breust at all (i am always bemused by the fact he is always first thrown up as trade bait on this board).

Was more going against the 'just wait and get him next year as a free agent'.

You under estimate the value of Breust
Start of next year. 29yr old gun small forward vs a 25yr old star outside mid/hbf.

1st pick plus Breust isn't ideal to win this trade. I would much prefer to wait 12 months and keep Breust and our pick but as others have stated if Lachie wants to come you make it happen.

I just think Clarko and Wrighty will think about it if that is GWS's request going by our past with paying seemingly overs in most trades.

Look at what we paid for Wingard. Whitfield is a better player than Wingard. I love Punky and he is very important but he will slow down over the next couple of years.

In saying all this. This is purely hypothetical so it's in the wrong thread haha.

Trading Burgoyne for a 5x Premiership player and 3x Norm Smith medalist might require us to throw in a sweetener.
5x and 3x? You must have some belief that Lions will win GF. And if they are, then a third Normie would not surprise.

When was Eddie Betts shipped off to Adelaide? Its also to do with Breust I am not sure he would want to go there. I am a big advocate of getting Lachie even over Stephen getting it done with a player is easier said than done and we don't want to mess with the playing group culture

It’s not in their interests to mismanage him and he’s got this far under their watch. If he’s keen to get to Hawthorn then we either make it happen this year with a reasonable deal (given the circumstances of free agency) or we get him as a free agent next year. Our first and “player X” (who we can only assume is a player we’re not going to want to lose) is too much. Particularly given free agency compo could be scrapped by this time next year. Which would mean we’d hold most of the cards in either case.
A lot can happen in a year. He may start to enjoy Sydney more, dynamics may change at GWS. With a quality talent like Whitfield, a bird in the hand is definitely the preferred option.

Better Brisbane than Geelong, Collingwood, Richmond or West Coast! In pretty good form at the moment too.

I'm not for jumping on the band wagon of other teams but Brisbane is the team I'll be hoping can make and win the GF. Seeing the Luke Hodge legacy built upon further than what it already is will be what I hope for.

It's not as if I want to see it happen. I just think with our recent club's history it is a genuine possibility that we do a trade like this.

I would never have said this 5 years ago but when I've seen so many of my favourites shipped off in bad deals for us nothing surprises me.

How Lewis netted us nothing yet Richmond were compensated well for Deledio really annoys me. They were in the same draft, same age, yet treated so differently in a trade.

People on here are on drugs if they think we gonna give up a first PLUS Breust for Whitfield!!! It won’t be a player of that caliber because a straight swap would get that deal done! It’s a different player. Also, Cogs either signs up in the next couple weeks or he’s out of there and gws know it!

As fans, If we can survive losing Franklin for nothing, surely we can survive losing whoever player X is and getting Whitfield in return..

Obviously it depends on who player X is. If we are serious about having a flag tilt in the next couple of years we can't be trading away any of: Lewis, Gunston, Breust, Wingard, Scully, Mitchell, Jaeger, Worpel, Impey, Scrimshaw, Sicily, Hardwick or Frawley. Arguably Big Boy too.

Why not mostly make up for losing Franklin for nothing by getting Coniglio for nothing?

He's been up there for many years now, he's not just going to start enjoying Sydney more all of a sudden. He's been linked with us since the threepeat years, which if true and he's still keen on Hawthorn today then 12 months longer isn't going to mean a lot. Especially given it means when he does arrive the list is a first round draftee + a good player better off, making his chances of a flag with us that much better.

They went on record saying that in May. Leon, Bartel, Wayne Campbell.

I think he's gone mate.

Nobody on the list is capable of playing the role that Breust can play. Now unless Breust himself wants out then trading him would be a terrible list management strategy. It offsets trying to get Coniglio or Whitfield.

Gunston and Breust are in their prime. With Mitchell back next year and a vastly superior midfield setup I’m expecting to see their output increase significantly.

The only reason as who why Smith will likely be traded out is because he plays in a position that can actually be replaced; ie Henderson, Scully, Morrison, Impey and Shiels are all capable of playing on the wing.

^ Or, and this is just a musing.. we keep Bruest and Pick 8 and just pick up all 3 over the course of this years' off-season and next for almost zilch.
Whitfield would be a RFA next year, not a chance in hell they don't match any offer on him if they had just lost Shiel, Scully, Patton and Coniglio in the previous 2 years. If we are getting Whitfield it will be a trade either this year or next.
