Yes. The AFL made sure of that. We have to pay Buddy the full amount, and the full amount stays under the cap as well.
Unlike any other club who signs star players. Everyone else is allowed to forgo the rest of the player's contracts and not have it counted in the cap.

It is true and outrageous.

... and we should have taken them to court.

Personally I would like a breakaway comp (smarter version of Super league). Expect most of the interstate teams would be up for it. Do a deal with Charnel Nein. Offer spots to two or three Melbourne teams and Geelong.

So give up our name and colours and accept less money. Sounds logical

Why give up our name? Why less money? Eliminating 5 or 6 dross weasel Melbourne clubs will improve the comp.

The AFL owns the names, logos and licensing rights to all 18 AFL clubs so if a breakaway league were to happen, we (and any other club that joins) couldn't use any current (or past) name, logo or set of colours associated with our club. Thus the marketability of a breakaway league takes a hit as no one will want to support a league made up of teams under new names and colours, thus less money as broadcasters and sponsors wouldn't have the same interest as they do in the current AFL set up.

Did that happen when the NRL went crazy? Are those clubs owned by NRL? The reason I ask is that most clubs have same names as prior to. I’ve only followed NRL since Storm so I don’t know.

Think it was around the time of the Crawford Report in 1993. The timing however was perfect with how Super League came along and as we've seen with how AFL put a stop to the Tayla Harris T-Shirt and the Dimmys knock off jumpers about a decade ago they will protect the licensing agreements even if its not popular to do so.

'southern sydney bloods' , still keep the colours in a different design

I dont think ive ever seen our list with this sort of dynamic...our senior players are old and the rest are teenagers.. i know we have harped on about the quality of our depth in the past but we literally have zero depth.. there is no one in the twos with any sort of real afl experience.. by that i mean guys like a dean towers, middle aged with a decent amount of senior games under their belt that mainly play twos but can step up when required.

Its a good situation when guys are in the twos and they are being kept out of the ones by guys in form and they are just striving day in day out. Our reserves is just under 20/s waiting for their chance to come in for the first time. There is no one keeping the regulars on their toes

That’s because there’s a few in the NEAFL who are put in the naughty corner after only one or two average/poor games (COR, Melican, Cameron, Fox) and they haven’t actually had a decent opportunity to show what they can do. How can they add to their career tally when they can’t even get three consecutive games?

Meanwhile we have Hanners & Jack playing nearly full seasons while banged up, Parker allowed to under-perform with job security, Buddy playing on the back of stuff all training. Horse showed he’d even rather go with an 18 year old nowhere near ready than just back someone like COR in to fill McVeigh’s role over the next month or so. Then there’s the fact we have a lot of youngsters in the best 22 who will be underwhelming at times, but Horse & co have to be patient and keep giving them opportunities, which in turn limits the opportunities of those trying to crack in to the best 22.

Few of us could have imagined at the start of the year that we would have fielded the side we did on Saturday. Virtually all our old guys are injured. Some I do not think we will see again. In the meantime we have learned some of our younger guys can play very well. Assuming everyone was fit this could be the Best 22. Options are Melican or Thurlow instead of Clarke depending on whether a tagger or tall stopper is needed.

COR - Rampe - Mills
McVeigh - Allir - Lloyd
Jones - JPK - Florent
Haylist - Franklin - McCartin
Papley - Blakey - Parker

Sinkers - Dawson - Hewett

I/C - Naismith - Fox - Heeney - Clarke

Inexperience is still hurting us in defence. We were supposed to have a gradual transition until smith, mcveigh and grundy fell. Still I was impressed to see some cool heads prevail on the weekend under intense pressure. Aliir has the athleticism but needs to learn when to zone off his man and when to play tight (and to stay goal side of his opponent). Melican played his best game IMO and has been stiffed by the umps recently. Dawson showed he is a defender who can consistently take a genuine contested mark. Rampe has risen to both senior mentor, co-captain in defence and upped his own game. He can stop the best of them. LLoyd is getting his mojo back after a shakey start and even Mills has started to fire again. The loss of Grundy is huge. Was there a forward he couldn't humble ? I don't see anyone replacing him this year but perhaps Melican and/or Aliir can eventually step up far enough. Smith is another non-replaceable. His record on dangerous small forwards is legendary. COR impressed me out of sight on the weekend. He has the attitude to take them on like Aliir but makes decisions quicker and isn't as easily pushed off the contest. I'd eally like to see Macca back to help guide this defence to greatness.
