Looks like the gloss has come of the big shiny new Parramatta stadium already with only 9000 last night for two NRL Sydney teams. Looks like "the build it and they will come theory" isnt working!

Completely without any basis in evidence that a shiny new stadium in the same proximate spot as the old one has any substantial sustained impact on attendance
Fair dinkum, where did Adelaide Oval move to/from?
Just the same old knockers, knocking, furious & spurious
Adelaide oval was built in the same spot on the edge of the city which is no where near football park where the AFL teams played previously
This is like shelling peas
no shock they are full of fanboi crapThis: non-afl-admin-crowds-ratings-participation-etc-thread
No expectation that the furious &/or spurious would understand, it worked a treat for cricket.

How about Geelong or the MCG after the southern stand upgrade.
Or heaps of examples overseas. Wembley Stadium for example. and it is not just average attendance. It is corporate income and other revenue sources.
But lets call the money on Parramatta stadium a waste after 1 bad game.

If they get a Larry Kestleman type running it, it is a very good move. If they get another David Gallop type, then it's a pointless move.FFA to surrender control of the A-League to clubs | The World Game
Football Federation Australia will soon cede control of the A-League to clubs with in-principle agreements struck for an independently-run competition.theworldgame.sbs.com.au
An independent A-league what does this mean for football in Australia? good or bad? thoughts?
We also have and open thread on the Football Australia board on the issue, feel free to share your opinion on their too if you like.

59,721 @ Perth Stadium for SoO last night.
Now hold the record crowd at the venue
Could be a similar situation to Docklands stadium were Rugby League, Union and soccer all hold higher crowds than the best AFL game.
Not sure that really means much but it's something to note.

KindaIs this new news?
The minute they bring in relegation and one of the a-league clubs drops to the second division is the second the comp implodes. Imagine Melbourne City running around playing in Morwell etc. Victory would start war before they drop down - especially if South melb come up - victory would have no supporters overnight
Yep soccer in Oz will follow the MLS model not the EPL model, even when there is 50m people in the country. Expansion via licence sales rather than free promotion and relegation will be the future.Zero chance of relegation ever coming in, and I reckon it puts any prospects of automatic promotion on the backburner as well. Why would they admit clubs for free when they can sell licences and split the proceeds?
History (at least in Australian sport) shows that if you give clubs power, they vote for themselves. Which is fully understandable, but it's not necessarily going to be the best thing for the league or game.
As a recent example, look at what happened to the Western Force. Basically ganged up on by NSW and Queensland and sacrificed for their benefit. The game of rugby in WA was just collateral damage and of no importance to other states. In an A-League context the clubs that need to be worried are the small market teams that don't bring a lot to the table that the large clubs can benefit from.
When there are leagues with as much cash as the European leagues, yes. However, will the A league clubs see any of it? A player can just quit his A league club, fly to Europe, and get signed by a European club, without the A league club getting a cent. Overseas leagues would have to agree to pay a transfer fee, as the A league has no means to require it. Not sure why they would. Is the potential for real profit only sale of talent?

Its actually worse than that. Mooy at Melbourne City was signed by City group, they loaned him to Huddersfield (he never actually played for Manchester city), Huddersfield then signed him permanently, for 8 million pounds.I have no understanding of how transfers occur, I'd have thought its under a FIFA arrangement & include the A-League.
Victory was valued at $40m last year

Thats a lot of upside for anything associated with the A-League.
