Bonner is either a superstar or looking elsewhere next season. Could very easily go either way he doesn't lack the athletic ability to be anything but too many kids with something to prove for him to get many chances.

I thought Bonner did show something at times in 2020.

The big issue is going to be with AA, Bergman and Jones coming in/on the squeeze for those defensive spots is much greater.

2021 is not a developing year where we try different players down back. It simply must be flag or bust and best team on the park every week.

If I was betting Id say he doesnt break in to the side without injuries, or the occasional rotation. Hope he can prove me wrong.

Bonner was okay but if he’s getting 12 games that means Burton is injured and neither Jones nor Bergman have come on. He either needs to improve his performance the way Byrne-Jones stepped up this year or we’ll be out in a prelim again if that’s the case.

My biggest issue with Bonner is where he played. When playing in defence, he is seriously exposed when 1 on 1. He lacks the physicality, which I can probably accept (not everyone can be a DBJ, Jonas or Hartlett) if he then didn't give away free kicks when he panics. If he plays a role at Port 2021, IMO it should be wing or half forward - where his strengths can be utilised - long left foot, intercept, fitness and can find the footy on the outside. Only likely to get a chance if we are hit by injuries. But useful depth player.

There’s no need to talk down Bonner. The fact of the matter is we have amazing depth in defence. Last year we had one of the best defence’s in the league. Two were in the All Australian squad. Outside our Prelim final defenders we have:

Aliir
Jones
Bergman
Garner
Bonner
Frederick

All of the above would get games at almost any other club (remember Frederick’s brother- not as good as our boy- got games at Freeo last year) and the majority would be regulars at most other AFL clubs.

Then there’s Rozee and Drew who played a lot off half back before being drafted and Jase Burgoyne who could slot in across half back in 2022.

So it’s no disgrace to Bonner to struggle to get a game at Port.

My only question is, why are we trying to convert Bergman into a defender when he was drafted as a mid/forward? The above shows we do not need another defender.

Don't forget Jarrod Leinert, and according to the club website:

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Bonner is as bad as some people make out, certainly nowhere near as bad as Pittard but that doesn't mean I think he's first 22. Especially when we have 12 defenders to choose from.

Bonners problem is maintaining focus / concentration

I think he’s alright and he’s the best run and carry player in defense we have. The only guy we have who can cover 20 metres through congestion in defense (other defenders are great runners with space but bonners the only guy who can do it in tight)

having said that I prefer jones and Bergman as long term options and both could put their hand up for a spot early and move in front of bonner.

Frederick is miles off
Frederick is the only medium/small defender I'd take Bonner over. As Garners buddy I'm obliged to say Garner > Bonner.

We really should've dealt him last year as part of the Fantasia trade. Port always hold onto players a year too long.

The only way Bonner gets worked into that trade is that we add him to what we already gave up. This is how Dodo does things.
Some people are probably happy just to get Bonner off the books but in terms of value, we don't lose anything by not having traded him last year.

This is a bit of the club using a new recruit for good news stories (and to get this confidence up after it was shot), surely.
Actually, the fact that he's not injured and is training well should be exciting. He's also day and a genuine small forward. Adds a bit more X factor to the forward line. Factor in the improvements of Marshall and Georgiadis then we have a lot to look forward to

Yep, I'm not trying to talk Frederick down but he's very much a developing type a full season in the SANFL should help & give us more of an idea of his future.
Yeah, I reckon he's closer than you think though. His issue is he has zero chance of getting a game without the worst injury run of all time. At a lesser team, I reckon he'd get an AFL crack this year.
