there are not many of these players going around and we were blessed to have 2 in cyril and poppy for a long time, which then influenced Richmond and now people are crediting Richmond for inventing the small pressure forward because the media couldnt bare giving HFC/Clarko any more credit.

either way we only have poppy on our list that can play this role and he isnt as sharp as he once was as a pressure forward, we have not even drafted or traded for a player of this ilk, unless you count Wingard, in which he is more valuable as a midfielder as we found out late last year.
I’m pretty sure Poppy was playing injured for most of last season which imo is why he didn’t have the best year.
He didn’t have any real help around him either with a lack of talls
It’ll be interesting to see how he goes this year.
Remember, most posters & so called experts wrote Hodge off after playing injured 1 year. He played another 3 or 4 yrs after that

If Poppy at 32 is our only hope then we're in trouble.
There are others that the coaches have set there that some dont agree with or like. but 32? Its old he's close to the end.

Back tightness only. No damage at this stage to the hamstring. Should only be out of action for a small amount of time.

sven_inc all connected right? Minchington's combination of chronic hamstring injuries, currently presenting as back tightness.

Hilarious, I ran the numbers and our small forwards in Breust, Rioli and Poppy all had better pressure statistics over the one year they were measured properly and available for our threepeat (2015) than either of Richmond's premiership teams. But it's the Richmond blueprint! Sigh.

It is all connected. Every hamstring symptom should be considered back-related except on some rare occasions. It's no surprise, put it that way. I really like him so hope they sort out his more hidden issues and he gets a gig with us soon enough.

I'm curious to see how the team will approach this problem. Nash provides a lot of speed and pressure, but he's very green and very tall. The one-two combo of Cyril and Poppy was outrageously dangerous. Hardly any team ever has that degree of forward pressure. it was outrageously good in the Hawthorn glory years.

We've got a little bit of an abundance of midfielders now (Mitch, Worps, Jags, The Chad, Shiels, Howe, Cousins and new guys like Jones and Finn). I wouldn't be surprised to find that the Hawks try rotating mids forward for defensive and scoring pressure around the ankles of the legion of talls we now have up there. If we go Patton, TOB, Gunners, Bruest up forward and then let the mids rotate through for bursts of pressure I guess that could work. Perhaps it may even be a bit confusing as the small defenders may have a hard time picking their opponents (in the 6, 6, 6 there's nothing to stop overloading mids at the bounce and they running to change positions).

It's tough to say. It's blindingly obvious that we can't solve the forward pressure challenge with the same approach we had before. Something needs to happen, though.

I think your onto something re the mids rotating through as small forwards. I can definitely see Shiels, JOM, Worpel and Wingard doing this this. It's been mentioned time and time again that Shiels doesn't have many positions he can play other than midfield but IMO I think he could definitely play as a pressure forward. No he's not the fastest guy in the world but he's tough as nails but his pressure is pretty good so I wouldn't be surprised to see him at least trialed there at some point.

This small pressure forward business will be addressed once Impey is back and Will Day is ready to take his streaming defender role. Imps could be a genuine star as a permanent small pressure forward but currently is playing spectacular footy in a position that SHOULD be slightly easier to replace.

Seems to be quite a bit of “doom and gloom” re current and future small forwards.

Yes our depth could be better but I am quite bullish on Moore becoming an effective small forward/pinch hitting midfielder. I know a lot about this kid pre draft from an excellent source. In his words, Moore has the inate ability to create goals from nowhere, will run through a brick wall and is totally fearless when attacking the ball. For his size - 176cm his contested marking is very impressive which seems to be forgotten. Overall his attitude is absolutely A1 and you can assured that he will tick all the boxes to get the best out of himself

There is a knock on his speed but he ain’t exactly slow either. Has a huge tank and his repeat efforts are elite, something very handy for a small forward. My source was genuinely shocked that he went so late in the draft.

I expect him to show a bit in his third year and really start to show glimpses of his ability in 2020.

He's not the slowest person in the world, sure. That said, you really need a burst - if you're a smaller bloke you need to be quicker over that first 20-30 metres than your opponent and he simply will never be that.

Good young player, might thrive at a different club with a slightly different role, but not a guy that will be able to do what we need him to do.

Will need to disagree to agree, time will tell I guess

Having watched the intensity and quality of the way Poppy has been training I'm not prepared to judge him by his age. Further with the arrival of
Patton and the likely improvement of Lewis and O'Brien I would trust Poppy wont be subjected to last season's tactic of bombing the ball in high when
he was matched up on a bigger opponent and sometimes two opponents. Finally at times Poppy struggled with injury last season so with an injury free
pre-season he is hopefully set for a successful season.

Only hope? Not sure anyone is saying that ...

Giving you flashbacks?

If we find a good ball user to replace Impey. Smith, Hendo or Finn can fill the forward pocket role. Worpel introduction to the team was thru the forward pocket, Finn could be similar.

Best option i would like to see is rotating the mids (Wingard and Omeara) thru the fwd pocket, keeping them fresh with Silk. They could easily ave 1 goal a game giving us 45+goals for the yr turning a weakness into a positive.
i see no reason why they couldn't if they are fresh they would create havoc.

I disagree. For what he lacks in speed he is a quick thinker and once he strings some games together and starts to feel like he belongs just watch it all click with that kid. He’s got some tools that you just can’t teach IMO.
