I am not claiming the new FFA TV model will be a great financial success, nor significantly increase GR support for soccer/more interest in the A League. I don't know. Time will tell.

It seems to be a strategic move to avoid a clash only.
IMO it would have been better to leave as is.
Better to have some support in summer rather rather than none in winter.

Don't think of pink elephants!!

FFA chief executive James Johnson has challenged football’s stakeholders to “stop worrying about other sports” .....

.....“If they want to be part of the biggest league in the country of any sport, they can make it happen.

“Broadly, we have more interest in our sport than any other. It’s just that the other sports are watched more. That’s it.

Seriously, the delusion!

The AFL has had more viewers in these last two rounds than the A League had for the entire season to date. The AFL and clubs turn over at least 10 times the FFA and A League clubs and have ten times the members.

Australian soccer's problem is it just cannot not think about other sports. More to the point it cannot shake off the delusions of grandeur that see expectations raised to absurd levels which is inevitable followed by disappointment, blame and discord.

I think Aus soccer is probably better off going to a calendar season (probably breaking in July at least) but that is more likely to result in decreased interest rather than increased in the mid term at least.

I will post soon some information on Sydney's male GR RL's very dismal return to play. The NSW/Canterbury Cup (basically NRL Reserves) is not returning for 2020; & also the snr Massey Cup & Sydney Shield. comps. (many players semi-pro) will return, in a combined comp., with only c. 8 Sydney clubs!
Other Sydney male GR comps. will also be down.

No NEAFL though either so nothing for Swans/GWS reserves either.

Makes me wonder IF the game will ever realise where it sits in Australia ... it might be the world game, its in our back yard, Australia. Deal with what they've got, not look at the yard through Euro Sun glasses.

I suspect it never will. Too deeply seated is the culture of grandiosity and victimhood in Australian soccer. The future will always be full of manifest destiny of going past a sport 10 times bigger than it and full of bitterness when it doesn't. This is Australian soccer's destiny

If they revert to calling it officially "soccer" then you'd have to say they can start to go down the right track.
ATM the soccer people are just beating their heads against a brick wall.
Rugby people are paying the price for making some critical decisions that came unstuck.
The NRL are talking about expansion at a time when rational people would think about consolidation or rationalization.
The AFL are just trying to get through with as little damage as possible.
Time will tell.......maybe as early as 2021.

A bloke named David Hill is to blame for the rebranding .... historians of the game in Aus would be well aware.
The PC decision of the media is a story ignored by the ..... the media. I cant see game sorting itself out until the A-League owners are given control of that comp in total, & that will have a different set of problems.

The strength of the AFL competition is that it is truly national, far from perfect but national.
The NRL national plan was ripped to shreds by Super League & is unlikely to address that this decade.

A lot of energy expended for arguably long term negative results.

The strength of the AFL competition is that it is truly national, far from perfect but national.

The AFL's main flaw is that it is the keeper of the code and that doesn't receive enough attention.

The NRL national plan was ripped to shreds by Super League & is unlikely to address that this decade.

If you modify your statement to "The NRL national plan was ripped to shreds by greed" then nothing has changed.
Self-interest is a problem across the board, just worse in some instances.

old soccer, new football. it was/is marketing announcing a new era of the game and the end of ethnic national league. Get over it, it was 15 years ago and if someone is so offended over a name to not watch, then the average IQ of the sport can only grow. What a totally rubbish point. As if someone would not play a game because they changed the name. About as biased and ridiculous as you can get. Which is saying something.

Came here to say that Japan has dropped out of the 2023 womens FIFA world cup bid, leaving only Aus/NZ and Columbia etc a 50/50 chance(should be more, but FIFA). Good (potentially) for the code and womens sport overall. Can't wait till i read all the negative posts about it...

David Hill shot the game in the foot. What should have been a step forward in the Australian sporting landscape was sacrificed for ego.
Soccer has been the loser, like it or not, simply sheer stupidity, either way, wear it.

If branding is important, its an issue, if not, there is no problem.

World Cup for the ladies is the best thing that could happen to the game here, only self interest can minimise the goodwill that should be generated at all levels of the sport.

I can't remember if it was David Hill or Lowry but it is perfectly legitimate thesis that the soccer's choice to call itself "football" without qualifier in a country where far more popular football codes exist has been to its detriment

Yes, it caused animosity and resistance where there should have been none.
It was a lot of wasted energy that could have been put into something more productive.
Australian Football is a very legitimate code of football - the game depends on accurate long-kicking, short kicking and many types of kicks.
Australian Football is the only football code where a goal has to be kicked cleanly through two post to score a goal.
Australian football was first to be codified and first to establish community clubs playing in regular community leagues.
The word "soccer" has entered the dictionary. We all know what it is to soccer a ball and to "head" a goal..
I don't see a problem with the name "soccer". it seems only soccer people in Australia have a problem.

I am confused. So, there is no anti-soccer feeling and the code itself is a bunch of sooks and overreacts to everything.

but when soccer "changed" its name to symbolise a new era for the world game, a name btw, which basically means to play with a ball on a field around the world, all these RL/AFL fans have sooked so much that it hurt the Socceroos and the beautiful game. huh....

Naaah.

It just meant that sad sack soccer fans became more obnoxious victims which made Australian soccer too toxic for fans of other sports to enjoy

Your confusion is called cognitive dissonance

Smell the fear :)

I can't see it making too much of a difference other than the positive media generated whilst the event is on. It's definitely a good thing but it's not a game changer, especially since it happens in July and August so will struggle for media attention in the first place.

There are plenty of other things that would be better for the local game than this.

My experience is that football to Sydneysiders is football.
Soccer wants the football tag because ..... its the world game

It can be the best thing that could happen to the game & not be a game changer in the wider sense.
Think we dont disagree.

But soccer is a long way back in third place in Australia and will stay there for a very long time!
Their crowds and TV ratings are pathetic and aren't about improve.
There's not another Frank Lowy around the corner either to prop them up anymore.

Mr Lederer formerly of Primo Meats already owns an A-League club & the A-League must stand alone if/when Soccer Aus goes forward.

Of course, AFL , NRL and RU football.

it has a huge chip on it's shoulder. It's MLS in the USA. What's different?
16 YEARS AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND YOU ARE STILL BRINGING IT UP!!!!!!!! Check who has a chip.....

god, Last time. Old soccer/new football, with an actual source. To quote Frank Lowy way back in 2004
"2005 will be one of the most crucial in the history of football in Australia and we will start it off with this symbolic move," Lowy said.

"The change in our corporate name is another part of the ongoing process of repositioning the game in Australia.

"It is another small but important step on the journey away from old soccer and into new football."

"The New Football in a corporate sense will stand for good, modern and transparent corporate governance and management, honest and open communication, inclusiveness and a "unity of purpose" in the best interests of the game," he said in an open letter to Australian soccer stakeholders today.

"Through extensive consultation with the football community and with our current and future consumers in the latter part of this year, we have also been able to articulate what the new football brand will stand for.

"Its core attributes of inclusiveness, family, expressiveness, youth, style and fun will be prominent in the way that football is presented going forward."
It was very important at the time to symbolise a clean breakaway from the old bad ways of doing things. Soccer Australia was beyond help. So, it was a step forward to rename it the FFA. Aus. Football has progressed since 2003 with the hosting of the Asian Cup, world cups, new league, so to say that it has hurt and is hurting the game is beyond reality and sensible discussion. Especially on an AR forum with people who care nothing for the round ball.

Each exclamation mark represents 1 kilogram of shoulder chip!

In 2001 Australia played uruguary at the MCG in front of 85,000.
In 2002 the world cup final outrated the AFL grand final in Australia
Meanwhile the AFL has grown ten fold in nominal revenues and Australian soccer has just signed a deal which will mean that its entire revenues (including its professional league :)) will be less than the AFL's big clubs

The only professional sport soccer has grown more than this century is rugby union.

People are just saying the choice to assume the name "football" has been to the sports detriment. It is a perfectly reasonable thesis with ample evidence in support. It will still be so in another 10 years. And in another 20 years :) .

Thats my memory, I blame David Hill, he took that team off the front page in Melbourne, an ego trip.
Take how well accepted the Storm are in Melbourne, sure the code warriors bleat, but they are well accepted in the sporting landscape.

Personally I can see the A-League getting off the deck but in the hands of the club owners - the Matildas are a huge opportunity, & junior development (of the game) is a winner.

Yep, the Storm are considered favourably overall in Melbourne. As much as League Unlimited is hotbed of anti-AFL bitterness and the NRL is actually a legitimate commercial rival there just isn't the level and breadth of bitterness and paranoia that Australia soccer has towards the AFL

Yeah I doubt it. The A League is back to square 1 and the Matildas will have no more sustained impact than the Socceroos have had. Why would they have any more impact?
