I do recall frees down ground not being paid if the ball went out of bounds on the full. The 'mark' can't be off the oval being the reasoning. But I've never seen the rule so I don't know what's actually correct.
They paid it the other way earlier in the qtr to freo (unless it wasn’t paid down the ground)

I thought those ones were brought back because the push happened as he kicked it

There is a part of me that hopes Port's 2020 Finals exit, is like what we witnessed tonight.

There is not enough gif's and meme's on the net to express how I would feel.
If 2020 has taught us anything it's that things will suck, especially for Crows' fans.

Port will win the flag, Carlton will make the finals, B Crouch won't get us Band 1 compo, we'll bring back Neil Craig and trade our first round pick for a big slow defender

This is the actual rule:

17.1.2 Awarding Free Kicks
Unless otherwise stated in these Laws, a Free Kick can be awarded at any location on the Arena and shall be taken where it is awarded or where the football is at the time, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team.

The Arena is defined as:

Arena: the Playing Surface and all of the area between the Playing Surface and the perimeter fence, including any break in the perimeter fence.

The way I would see it, if the ball hasn't crossed the boundary line yet, the free kick should have been at the very instant where that ball is, or where the infringement occurred. However as soon as the ball crosses over the line, it is out of bounds on the full. In that sense, the location of that OOTF free kick would be at the boundary where the ball crossed. Paying the free kick for the push should then constitute a reversal of the out of bounds kick, and awarded at that location.

So in conclusion, the maximum penalty the umpire could award under the rules would be the location of the out on the full free kick, not where the ball landed after play

regardless of whether or not the decisions were right or wrong... watching the replay.. the other thing the umpires did was completely **** up where Newnes shouldve been taking his kick from...

the ball went out of bounds at the 50m mark... a carlton player thinking that it was an OOB free to freo even went there and stood the mark on the 50m arc and boundary line..

then the ump told the players it was a down field free to carlton and for some reason the mark moved about 15m along the boundary closer to goal.

sucked in freo (perth’s powa) but.... Its a total and utter **** up and the AFL needs to respond.

Seems like a pretty critical thing to know if you’re umpiring at the highest level

I mean it doesn't take a genius to work out. My assumption without seeing the rules was the maximum penalty the umpires could award was a "down field" free kick at the location of the out on the full free. It couldn't be paid a 50m penalty because he played on.

Thanks

Very vague and if that's all there is completely ineffective and will need to be rewritten.

A free down ground is never paid where the ball is. Always where it ends up for starters. If a forward ends up marking the kick for instance he'll just take the kick from there. He won't go back to where the ball was when the infringement occurred.

You can't pay it where the ball 'is' either because the ball is usually up in the air. Where the ball is or is above.

One of those ones that happens rarely enough and is usually inconsequential so the rules aren't really tested until something like this pops up.

Yep that's the way I see it. The out of bounds free was awarded on the point of the 50m arc. That's where the kick should have been.

It also wasn't awarded where the ball ended up either, which would have been closer to goal than the original kick. It was awarded between the two, and to the wrong player. Gibbons was clearly the closest
