Don’t think they are quite the same player though? Joyce can play on the absolute gun FFs due to pace a size whereas Wilkie is more your 3rd forward matchup. I might be wrong there but that’s my impression. Howard will be playing no matter what so I’ve got Howard over Wilkie
I think if we would be better off with a third tall defender when we already have two key defenders in the side though. Not sure there is a need there for Joyce.

From the few times i saw him play live last year he was heaps better as a forward than a backman and just saying you need more than just pace and size to play on GUN forwards , Cameron would kick 10 on Joyce

Battle is going to be really exciting to watch this year. Seems like he's very fit. We already know he's a very good player. It will be fascinating to watch what kind of level he goes to in 2020.

Others to watch for me are:
Hannebery. Could be the A grade mid we're after.
Carlisle. Flying on the track, his best is elite. We missed him last year, and he frees up others.
Clark. Second half of last year he was just so good to watch. Could be the kind of player you go to the football just to see what he does. The fact he was finding it bodes very well too.

Gresham's problem as a mid is his disposal. He's a good ball winner, can burst from clearances and break lines. He just isn't a great field kick a lot of the time. But you need forwards who can play midfield and midfielders who can play forward, which is why Gresham and Billings are so valuable to us, because they are really the only two. Guys like Ross, Dunstan & Steele really can't go forward, and guys like Lonie, Parker and Hind really can't go into the guts.

Agreed, he kicks across his body far too much, I hope they can train that out of his system.

There’s examples of Joyce playing on some absolute guns last year and the results were horrific. He’s nowhere near ready for that.

Seb cops a lot because of his disposal. I was on his case about skying the ball when kicking it but i feel he lowered his eyes and hit his targets towards the end of the season. One of the things that shits me about our midfielders is they don't grab the ball in the center square then have the intent to run to the 50 and kick a goal. Seb is some one who does this.

At the moment as mentioned above one of my biggest knocks against gresh would be that he chucks the ball on the boot a lot. But he has great vision and uses the ball very well in other aspects of the game. If he can clean this up he will be a really damaging for us.

I am looking forward to seeing what this year holds. IMO our gameplan and the way we move the football, our training/preparation and just the mentality of the boys is going to be a big step up from last year which will hopefully translate into players have more time to make the right decision and use the ball more efficiently.

Seems Sydney may have dodged a bullet with Daniher

Dodoro's pig headedness has screwed his club. Methendon saved Sydney from themselves there. Anything more than a mid to late 1st was overs, let alone the druggies demanding 2 1sts.

Madness.

I think people will see a different midfield this year, in that they will move the ball better by hand and foot. Our setups invited pressure kicks etc in the past, but under the new coaching regime that will improve as will our forward entries.
Agree they were under pressure but doubt it was the set up. They are and still will be under pressure because they lack pace. Strangely Steven never looked under as much pressure playing in the same midfield and for one simple reason. He has pace. Bet hill doesn’t seem under as much pressure as Ross this year. Wonder why.

Yeah kind of disagree with Dunstan. He is/was a regular goal kicker.

Gresh is better than OK as a mid when he’s firing. He was the one providing spark and creativity in the absence of Steven most of the season. Biggest issue was consistency, but he showed he could be a real asset there.

I’m with you HP... I don’t understand why many want to see Gresh predominantly play forward when our midfield is in need of playmakers with dash. There’s no doubt he has his weaknesses as a pure mid (tendency to rush his disposal & kick wildly across his body) but he’s still a baby in terms of development.

I hope that with the new additions to the midfield Gresh will be one of the greatest beneficiaries... keep in mind his numbers at this point of their careers is ahead of GAJ (& he had a much stronger midfield supporting him).

One of the things I like about Dunstan compared to others is he is a career "a goal every other game" midfielder. But he kicks his goals from the midfield - you wouldn't start him at a centre bounce ahead of the ball.

It’s not just pace it’s also strength, class & creativity. Pendlebury is as slow as a wet week but has all the time in the world. We need to get more midfield minutes out of Clark & Gresham. Jones could add pace & be the big surprise. We don’t necessarily need him to be a laser kick just grab the ball out of the centre & bomb it deep inside 50. If we are to improve Dunstan, Steele, Ross, Billings & Hanneberry should be the third mid & not start in the midfield together.
