If you don't like rEmOvE cOmPo, then you won't like my suggestion which is scrap free agency altogether.
I'm ambivalent towards it; what I don't like are reactionary measures which haven't been fully thought through under a range of scenarios (in essence every rule change the AFL have brought in over the last decade).

I'm all for clearly articulated ideas which have made an attempt to understand the full spectrum of consequences; so with that I'm all ears

Remove RFAs, make everyone an UFA after 6 years.
Simplify compo so it is only end of 1st end of 2nd and end of 3rd. However on the other side make draftees contracts 2+ team 2.

So draftees get one shot at a big contract at their own club then they're a free agent after that

I'm not a big hately fan but would absolutely be in his ear he will get some games next yr then rockliff will retire make it happen pick 28.
Then if dodo wakes up bonner it is easy.

Be careful what you wish for.. that's a surefire way to creating a Premier League haves and have nots system.

Currently no one has suggested a better system than the current compensation system as it stands, that doesn't further propagate a bunch of destitute feeder clubs ending up on life support.

So until something better is suggested we should stick with it.

Not at all. The Premier League is dealing with hundreds of millions in salary every year. There is no salary cap, no football department cap etc. Even with the free market, the premier league has arguably never been so open. 15 years ago it was the big 4 of Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea & Arsenal. Now there are a slew of additional clubs who are challenging for the top spots like Tottenham, City, Leicester & Everton.

The AFL has the salary cap, a soft cap for footy dept spending which is more than enough to equalise the playing field in terms of opportunity for each and every club. It is then up to the clubs to be able to put in the necessary people in place to get a competitive advantage - both on and off the field.

In terms of abolishing FA compo, this needs to be looked at in conjunction with the demands of players calling for trades just 1 or 2 years into their AFL careers. Quite frankly, I have long thought the idea of free agency being this golden egg for players to get to their club of choice is bullshit when you look at how easy it is for players to move even when under contract these days. 99 times out of 100 they get to move to their club or choice regardless of if they're contracted or not. Clubs have very little power when a player wants to move, and combined with free agency, i can understand why they try to manipulate the compo to get full value. That being said, I think there are better ways in which we can restore a more equitable balance of power with players and clubs, whilst still having free agency for the players.

My first suggestion would be that entry AFL contracts should be changed from the standard 2 year deals. Instead, i would propose they are a 2 year contract with a team option to extend them by an additional 2 years.

I also would propose that players can be traded to other clubs without consent. Right now that cannot happen because of a myriad of reasons, one big one being that for a trade to be completed, the player has to execute a new contract with their new club. I have said for a long time that contracts with players if traded should just transfer to their new club. Contracts are transferred in all of the major US sports & it works well there imo.

In terms of free agency, with the extension of rookie contracts to a proposed years (2 + 2 year team option), I would suggest that restricted free agency begins after 4 years service. RFA in all sporting leagues is quite a messy situation. I have two suggestions there:

One is that you have no compo for RFA, and that if the incumbent club elects to match an offer for a player, then that player must stay with the incumbent. Alternatively, if you wanted compo for RFA, it gets tricky because there are infinite options. I like the idea of a club placing a "tender" on a player. That is, if they tendered a 2nd round draft pick on the player, if a new club were to sign them, they would have to give their 2nd round pick to the incumbent club. In such a proposal, the high water mark of any compo should be a 2nd round pick.

Unrestricted free agency would occur under my proposal at 8 years of service in the AFL. Compo wouldnt exist for each individual player, but would be determined based on the net gain/loss of free agents for that club over an off season. Clubs could receive multiple compo picks, but it wouldn't be higher than a 2nd round pick.

I also think that player salaries should be made public, but thats another discussion altogether.

Yeah I’d much rather Hatley then Fantasia for pick 28
I think pies would let us have stephenson for 28 as well and he is a proven goal kicker just got to get his head right which ken seems to be good at doing
Even Lonie could be good as could get him for next to nothing

there’s no way players should be made a free agent after 6 years half of which clubs would have spent developing the player.

free agency was brought in with zero understanding of how it works in america

in American sports, teams do not develop players

high school and college do that. Many high schools have as good as or better resources than second tier comps in Australia do like the sanfl and vfl before you even get to college programs.

This (On the left) is Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf before he joined the NFL.

Teams are not waiting years for players to develop and play, they’re ready day one.

players in American sports have careers 2 to 3 times longer than afl athletes
The NBAs Vince Carter just retired at the age of 43 and Tom Brady is still playing NFL at the age of 43.

Due to being worldwide sports or in the NFLs case just home to a population of 330m people available free agents usually number 50-300 each offseason depending on the sport. As opposed to Australia playing a unique sport in a population of under 25m offering less than a dozen free agents each year.

Trying to model free agency on sports in a completely different landscape is dumber than trying to breed trout in the vacuum of space.

afl clubs have to recruit and develop players for a long time from a very small pool and in offseason have a much much smaller pool of players to recruit from.
Lowering the age to reach free agency would be the single most destructive thing we could do to the sport. Ever.

Is Fantasia any better than Zac Langdon?

Nope - There is your benchmark. Similar players really

My gosh... puts this ridiculousness with Dodoro/ Essendon in perspective. Makes me feel dirty knowing we're even dealing with them.

its funny that essendon never think they're doing other clubs favours by being so unreasonable...its so easy for Port to walk away from this deal, and look honourable too because they tried.

fantasia wouldn't think less of us, just of essendon. meanwhile his value keeps dropping

We'd be better off getting games into Farrell and Woodcock than paying any price for Fantasia.

woodcock will likely make it at AFL level but I can't see Farrell getting there. A Thomas type height may be possible.
