Some obvious ones like Motlop need to be addressed but there are some mid tier that continually don't stand up or have flatlined/declined that I'd be looking long and hard at:

DBJ - I've never been a fan so maybe see the faults first but by gee he consistently gets beaten in 1on1s and lacks the elite ball use off half back. Given our glut of running half backs who can use the ball he's expendable.

Lycett - a warrior who we love but the game is passing him by and his style of play has been found wanting in really big games. Time to blood the younger Hayes and find out what we have there. I'd keep Scoot around based on the following name.

Ladhams - Sorry he's just not going to make it. A talented guy who has not shown the desire or mental aptitude to make it as a 200 game AFL player. He's our version of Braydon Preuss. Another club would take him based on the raw talent and then he'd be off the list at the end of that contract.

Houston - This one hurts but Dan hasn't improved a lick for a couple of years. I give him a pass based on the shoulder which I think never got right this year but he needs to step it up quickly. We talk about a lack of midfield depth, Dan is one who should be filling that gap.

Jonas - Another who lacks smarts and panics all too often. Tommy at best is a fringe 3rd defender, but for us he's donning the #1 which needs to end so they can critically evaluate his performance each week and drop him when the time is right. Clurey could easily play his role and then we have some flexibility with match ups. Unfortunately Tom doesn't look capable of consistently winning 1on1 contests in the heat of battle.

Robbie - brings a tear to my eye but it's time for the little champ to hang 'em up. He's brought so much joy to our lives but his body is shot and you just can't have a small forward not bringing ground pressure these days. Shame on you Ken Hinkley for not getting this man a flag.

Hard to agree with any of those except Motlop, Jonas and to a lesser extent Lycett. DBJ had an average year in comparison to last year, but lifted towards the end. Was ok in the PF, far from our worst. He's coming off an AA year, I'd back him to come good. (tradeable if we get Dawson)

Agree we need to see what Hayes can do

Houston was having an amazing season until he hurt his shoulder - no doubt he goes on for surgery and that it impacted him.

Ladhams has been excellent in the latter stages, and whilst he didn't get a score, he competed really strongly and was pretty good in the PF. May lose his spot to Hayes but I'm not getting rid of him just yet.

Robbie has another year, wasn't the same after his knee injury, but still has a role to play

Amon is probably the one who might net us something of value. Definitely admire his improvement but still see him in a similar category to Polec as someone whose bad almost outweighs his good and whose lack of physical presence (and awareness) costs us at key moments. Like Polec when he left his trade currency is at an all-time high. Not sure that there are going to be many attractive trade options on the table though.

Houston was destroyed by the shoulder industry this year but thought he started to show signs of returning to his best in the latter part of the year. Deserves another chance. Needs to work on his physical conditioning and develop some upper body strength. Not sure how a guy who trains the amount that they do can look the way he does (Fantasia another in that camp).

DBJ was shocking this year but I think deserves another chance given his previous season.

Wouldn't be surprised if Robbie hangs up the boots. Just looks physically spent and his lack of pace (never a strength) is stopping him from getting to contests.

Time for a rebuild.
This side will be mentally scarred from last night for the next 5 years. Likely to drop to mid table in 2022.

Rocky - has retired.
Hammer - let him go as a free agent and a 3rd round pick for that.
Motlop - failure. Delist.
Charlie - one more year to mentor our younger mids, then delist.
Jonas - not guaranteed best 22 anymore, so Ollie to captain the side.
Lycett - him and Martin were comical. 2 battered beasts who can't jump 6 inches off the ground anymore charging into each other. Play him 1st ruck for 12 to 14 games, and give Ladhams and Hayes each half a dozen games as 1st ruck when he is being "managed".
Gray - manage him ala Lycett. Body can't stand the rigours of 22 H and A games, but still posesses the magic now and again to go around one last time.
Boak - poor last night but fought to the end. Reckon he's allowed one bad game a season at his age! Gets another yea, maybe 2.
Farrell - bit like Amon, starting to develop, and has some promise. But see if we can get something for him.
Lienert - great servant, and like him a lot, but if the coach ain't picking you, maybe we see what trade value he has.
Garner - ditto as above two players.

That's 11 potential players to look at. 3 straight out departures, 5 to last until 2023, and 3 possible trades.
Rejuvenate this squad now, with terriers who have manic desire, hunt the ball and the body, and will do ANYTHING to win.

After a day to calm down, I still think a short sharpe rebuild is needed. Ideally under a new coach but I’ll leave that for the many other threads. We simply have too many players who are regularly found out for being not good enough.

This window is closed. It’s now all about setting ourselves up for a sustained period of success. Which I think can start in as little as 2 years because we do have good young talent on the list.

Dixon - time to see what the forward line and Georgiades can do without him. One of the Queensland clubs will give back a late first round pick at least.

Lycett - looks a battered old man already. Hayes is a good tap ruckman with nothing left to learn in the SANFL. Gold Coast, Bulldogs, Geelong, someone will get good service out of him.

DBJ - continually exposed in aerial contests and since the 2020 prelim in any one on one. He is too poor overhead to play in a contemporary back line. Jones will be an immediate improvement. I don’t know what if any value he has but I don’t think that should matter - we need to move on.

Clurey - plateaued at not quite good enough. No point paying him to play in the SANFL. Get what we can and move on.

Motlop - had some good moments but now is the time for Farrell/Schofield.

Gray - a genuine legend and hall of famer. If he goes around another year it should primarily be as medi-sub. Williams need to bust a nut this off-season.

Jonas - he can captain the SANFL. His whole career has been plagued by wild form slumps and momentum killing games. He plays the easiest role on the field so won’t be hard to replace.

We keep focussing on forwards and backs, but the real issue is the lack of real quality and depth in the centre. We were smashed in the middle by -28 clearances in the first quarter alone last night. This pattern is consistent against the very best and improving it must be the number 1 priority. The how is not easy, with no low draft options so a path is to structure up for future with Rozee, Butters , Houston, Hayes,Amon all being allowed to develop in the middle even if that comes with short term pain. We also may need to look at the mid coaching, with a major review of skills ie quick give etc and general centre structures / patterns.
Need some new high quality specialist staff with fresh ideas.

it will be impossible to recruit top end mids without giving up first round draft pics so its pretty much impossible. but we need mids. so we have to try and make some..get woodcock, farrell, young burgoyne, mead, butters, rozee and train them into mids this offseason and play them. Also go out and try and ftrade for some youg mids with potential that are quite getting a run.

Can we send Marshall and fantasia to Adelaide for their good midfielder?

If they would take motlop we'll pay his salary to get it done

Fantasia is a perfect crow. Marshall is a soft spud who should be moved on and motlop is a humour device now

Geoff Parker escapes a lot of scrutiny because he has picked off some very exciting players who make an immediate impact in outside positions.

But name the actual inside mids he has drafted in the past few years who have made an impact and look like a long term prospect. Not guys who look like they are exciting running around on flanks but players with a junior pedigree as a mid who have gone on to show they can produce at AFL level.

Drew? Is that it? And he's been on the list a while. SPP is a powerhouse soldier but has been wasted as a forward this year. Even so, he's not a big possession winner as a mid and not super skilled.

We really need to get some genuine centre square midfield talent. Looking over the next few years I see Ollie Wines and ...
I didn't see this post before I started my no more flakey flankers thread but this sums up why I started that thread.

DBJ was an all australian last year and club champion. Wtf happened? It's not even like he is injured. Maybe he needs to go home. Should be worth something decent in a trade.

I love Robbie Gray but i hope he retires. He's done.

Motlop has to be de-listed.

We can't trade Hayes.

Clurey is better than Jonas.

I wish we had drafted Bailey Smith over Rozee. I don't care that he is ocd and didn't want to leave home. It was draft tampering.

How did Bonner become our best player?!

Hopefully Ken and Voss go to Gold Coast/ Carlton / Collingwood and we get a new start.

This prayer that we can turn Jones, Bergman, Butters and Rozee into star mids is a long way from reality.
Mead has no runs on the board. McEntee is a feisty squirrel but little more. Schofield has something about him but is tiny.
The state of our midfield stocks is a massive worry.
That why we needed Merrett and should have done harder for Parker when Merrett re-signed

I’m on the fence about Marshall but he is the least of our problems.

He was decent last night. But he is not getting the best defender and he should be doing more in our setup on a week to week basis. In 2 years time, he moves up one place in the pecking order and so he needs to improve a fair bit just to maintain his very inconsistent current form. If he doesn't have 2 seasons of solid improvement, he won't make it. He needs to improve his kicking so he takes advantage of what he is already getting. He needs to compete better. People want to make the Westhoff comparisons but Westhoff had a strong set of hands. He might have got pushed around in the Dixon role with people hanging off of him, but the second he went up the ground, he controlled the air. Marshall doesn't do that. He doesn't look capable of being a 25+ disposal per game winger and for all his skill as a 6'7 player, he doesn't do the freakish things Westhoff did. And for all of Westhoff's good, he was a frustratingly inconsistent player. Played plenty of terrible games in losses and was our 'barometer' which is a backhanded compliment. Dougal Howard has everything Marshall has and more presence and we have spent years shitting on him. You're right he is the least of our problems, but he is a problem nonetheless.

So what do we have.

Pick 16ish and pick 60ish.

If it was me, I'd clear the decks. I really don't know what we can do, overtrading for Fantasia has crippled our hand this year.

We're stuck in a not good enough to win the flag cycle though. So for me, **** it, short term pain for long term gain. We need to have a couple crappy years, get some good draft picks, while getting games into the next gen.

OUT:
Rockliff
Burgoyne
Hartlett
R Gray
Mayes
Clurey (straight trade for Dawson)
Lycett (trade get a 2nd round back maybe)

IN:
Dawson
2nd round pick
Pick 16
Burgoyne
Pick 60 odd.

Play

Georgiadies, Marshall and Ladhams every week
Play Hayes
Play Lachie Jones & Bergman
Ride Williams like no one has before and push him to a good level of fitness. Literally hire someone to just be pushing him all day every day.
Play Duursma as an inside mid.
Play Rozee in the center square all year, regardless of results. Have Butters also spend way more time in there regardless of results.

Draft mids and key backs. No ****IN FLANKERS.
