Lycett 100% has to go or be made backup for Hayes/Ladhams.

He was horrendous last night. He played a 35 year old corpse and tapped it down the throat of doggies players in every ruck contest in the first quarter.

Was horrific to watch.

He may somehow still have some trade value too. Don’t make the same mistake again as Lobbe at not selling at their highest value when you know they have no decent future in a good side.

Some obvious ones like Motlop need to be addressed but there are some mid tier that continually don't stand up or have flatlined/declined that I'd be looking long and hard at:

DBJ - I've never been a fan so maybe see the faults first but by gee he consistently gets beaten in 1on1s and lacks the elite ball use off half back. Given our glut of running half backs who can use the ball he's expendable.

Lycett - a warrior who we love but the game is passing him by and his style of play has been found wanting in really big games. Time to blood the younger Hayes and find out what we have there. I'd keep Scoot around based on the following name.

Ladhams - Sorry he's just not going to make it. A talented guy who has not shown the desire or mental aptitude to make it as a 200 game AFL player. He's our version of Braydon Preuss. Another club would take him based on the raw talent and then he'd be off the list at the end of that contract.

Houston - This one hurts but Dan hasn't improved a lick for a couple of years. I give him a pass based on the shoulder which I think never got right this year but he needs to step it up quickly. We talk about a lack of midfield depth, Dan is one who should be filling that gap.

Jonas - Another who lacks smarts and panics all too often. Tommy at best is a fringe 3rd defender, but for us he's donning the #1 which needs to end so they can critically evaluate his performance each week and drop him when the time is right. Clurey could easily play his role and then we have some flexibility with match ups. Unfortunately Tom doesn't look capable of consistently winning 1on1 contests in the heat of battle.

Robbie - brings a tear to my eye but it's time for the little champ to hang 'em up. He's brought so much joy to our lives but his body is shot and you just can't have a small forward not bringing ground pressure these days. Shame on you Ken Hinkley for not getting this man a flag.

Spot on. 2 of those in Ladhams and Houston being good mates with AJ would address the elephant in the room of 2 players that don’t fit in with the culture that should be set at a footy club.

Chris Davies and Jase Cripps get a lot of (deserved) kudos for the lineup at old mate’s disposal, but that’s the second time we’ve lost a cutthroat final at AO with $1,000,000+ of salary cap going to cooked players unworthy of selection.

Is this a fairly standard occurrence, or?

Criticism of Lycett is strange. Had 26 HO's with 9 being to our advantage. Had 9 tackles to go with his 14 touches. Yeah, he's no Gawn or NicNat but he is perfectly serviceable. And realistically better than any available option.

Need to get rid of:
DBJ
- Seriously, we need to tell DBJ to FRO. Biggest downhill skiier, from his pissweak tackle attempt on Bont in Q2, getting torn to shreds by Martin in the PF last year (yeah, a high bar), and having one solitary disposal in the first half of that North Melbourne disaster in 2019. Looks great with ball in hand knowing that we are in the contest and he can take the game on, but shits himself in every one on one contest and can't impact the play otherwise.
Motlop - past it.
Rockliff - already gone.
Hartlett - doesn't have a place in our best 22 going forward.
Woodcock - this one is borderline, I don't think he'll ever be more than Sam Gray, but can understand if the club want to see him over one more year.

Should be shopped around (but only for a decent deal)
Houston - If the rumours are true, I strongly agree with shopping Houston around. Not just for picks, as he's better than what we'd get for him with a pick, but we've seen what his best is - and that's a solid contributer at best. Too slow and one dimensional to be a mid, not big enough to be a defender.
Clurey - too short, and too similar to Jonas and McKenzie.
SPP - love his attack on the ball, but doesn't look like he'll ever be a midfielder. Poor disposal by hand and foot, doesn't find much footy on the outside, and after 5 years on the list still only gets low TOG% suggesting coaches know he'll never have a good enough tank.
Ladhams - problematic off field and looking more like his u17 year was a flash in the pan that will never be replicated - no signs of being close to prolific in the ruck, and a poor mark.
Bonner - probably our best in the prelim but there's no guarantees he ever hits that level again. Plus we have plenty of his type.
Marshall - will never be a true KPF, but I'd keep him unless we can secure a replacement KPF as he can at least play a role.
Dixon - as with Marshall, would only trade if it facilitated/was the result of us securing a genuine KPF replacement.
Garner - off to Brisbane for peanuts.

Untouchables: Rozee, Butters, Duursma, Aliir, Amon, Bergman, Burton, George (but only just), Jones, Wines - all needed as our next core. Boak also included as a club champion.

Jonas, Lycett, McKenzie you wouldn't call untouchable but also just won't be traded due to being worth more to the club than what we'd be able to get in a trade. Gray is a club champ, but not sure if he's got another season in him.

The rest are either players that we keep developing (e.g. Drew, Farrell) or know they are role players/backup (Fantasia, Lienert).

Dixon and Powell-Pepper should both be up for trade. Underachievers but still have currency.

Darcy Byrne-Jones to be considered too.

Marshall we probably need to keep if we trade Dixon. Otherwise I'd have him up too.

I'm torn between wanting to blow up the list and saying we should be trading out guys like DBJ and Houston and maybe even Amon whilst his value is at its peak, but also knowing that this years draft probably isn't the right one to do it in.

Maybe we find a happy middle ground.
If we can secure Dawson and are confident with Lachie, that definitely opens the door to trading someone like DBJ out.

Crows in front for Dawson, they have offered him a better term and money.
A good showing last night may have turned him our way but .......

Fine let them be, we need to turn over a decent portion of this list and draft players who can actually play their position

Stop turning wingmen into KPD
Stop turning flankers into mids
Recruit KPD who are tall and strong enough to actually do the job
Play the AA underage Ruck and see if he can give us first use

There’s lots of gaps on our list if we are measuring it against the best (Dees Dogs Lions) all daylight ahead of us in these areas

Dawson doesn’t change any of that so he’s not really needed right now

Fwiw if im Dawson I’m not coming into a team that’s gonna be scarred for the next couple seasons I’m going to the team that’s already swallowed a few bowls of shit and is building back up, not the one in denial it has to eat any in the first place

Happy to take future picks and focus on developing the players already on our list for a year.

DBJ and Houston are the obvious two that should be up for trade. Both had poor seasons and are easily replaceable (Dawson replaces Houston almost immediately).

No to trading SPP and no to trading Ladhams. Both have the type of mongrel we desperately need more of and have shown enough to be worth persisting with.

We need to improve our midfield.

We're missing at least one genuine hard, strong, explosive, skilled, ball-winning inside mid. While we're at it, it would be great if he shits gold, too.

If there's an option out there (and I don't know that there is), throw the kitchen sink at him. The Merrett money we saved up. Picks. Players. Just about everything except our ruck depth should be on the table.

If there's not, it's time to start sunsetting our older players and attacking drafts.

That doesn't mean a crazy firesale where we dump 10 regular starters in one off-season. It also doesn't mean fantasy land where we trade Dixon for four first rounders and Christian Petracca and Harry McKay.

Rockliff already retired.
Hartlett should be "retired".

Motlop should be retained on a one year contract - people are very quick to forget how good he was before undergoing syndesmosis surgery in August. Until Farrell comes back from his ACL, Motlop's not keeping anyone out of the side anyway.
Ladhams should be retained. Still very green. Can't have a no dickheads policy and also have Ken and Chad on the payroll. Can't seriously go into next season with only an aging Lycett and an untried Hayes. Show me an available replacement player and I'll change my mind.

Can we send Marshall and fantasia to Adelaide for their good midfielder?

If they would take motlop we'll pay his salary to get it done

Fantasia is a perfect crow. Marshall is a soft spud who should be moved on and motlop is a humour device now
They don't have any midfielders that would equate to one of those players

12th year in the system and has always been 30-70 matchwinner or passenger. We knew what we were getting and he's lived up to that expectation. I think he's had his chance.

The draftees since the rozee year really need step up. Mead, Williams etc. Really is time to phase out the old guys. The onky one I'd keep is Boak. A lot of people trading out clurey. I'd probably keep him in the Jonas role and retire the captain.
Williams in particular is one who should be aiming to have a massive off season. Spend the entire off season training with Boak and come back next year the fittest you've ever been.

It seems funny everyone wants to trade Dixon and Marshall but seriously who would want to be a key forward in our forwardline. Kick it long to the pack of Dixon and Marshall and 6 defenders. Sack the forward coach. They have been crap all year.
