Wait, did Zak Jones only get 1 vote for that ridiculously dominant game against Hawthorn, when he had 37 disposals (16 contested), 13 score involvements, 7 clearances and kicked 2 goals!?

He is so important to us Zac Jones I’m not always a fan but we need him to go to All Aus level next year. Average 28 touches plus no down games. We need one more gun mid both Melb and dogs have dominant midfields I really like the mix of Steele Jones and clark. Would love it to become our A1 midfield. Grunt speed tackling and class.

There’s always a bit of shenanigans with votes, I don’t think Steele will ever be an ump favourite either. Started doing run with/tagger roles for us a few years ago and I don’t think the umps really appreciate the defensive side of the game. That massive tackle he layed on Hopper (?) when we played GWS that they called a dangerous tackle and penalised him for, just shows some of the tackling and defensive work is just seen as negative by umps.

But then Steele won the AFLPA Most Courageous Player award so I think that shows how he’s viewed by peers rather than umps.
Steele got the 3rd most free kicks in the league this year. The umps reward his defensive work all game.

Possibly a dumb question, but what’s the difference between being delisted and not being offered a contract? Don't they amount to the same thing?
No, he will be traded

Its interesting that from an internal perspective Dunstan didnt rate in our top 10 for the year yet outside our club he polls second highest.
Not that I think for one moment potential new clubs will factor in brownlow votes but a savvy manager may use it to push the price up?

He's a Free Agent so will walk where he wants to go and we may get a compo pick depending on what his new contract is.

So him getting 11 votes may have increase his contract, at least thats what his manager will push and it may get us a second instead of a third in compo.

Right now, the media think he will go to Gold Coast and be on their rookie list which would mean we wouldnt get any compo pick. But that would suggest Gold Coast were the only team interested because why would you pick a rookie contract over being on a main list.

Some reports Carlton could be interested, but with Cerra and Hewett reportedly going there it seems unlikely. Potentially Adelaide as well, but that might just the media linking them because of what happened last year.

Hopefully some other clubs show interest in him so we can get a better pick. Clubs like Port, Richmond, Brisbane and Sydney could all do with some immediate midfield depth and a big bodied, ball winner so hopefully one of them shows some interest in him.

Not sure if posted but Steele's 26 is the most by a saint since Dal Santo polled 28 in 2011 (second to Swan on 34), and second most since Harves won with 32 in 1998. Would have been enough to win several previous counts.

That said the fact that 26 was only good enough for 5th this year tells you there's been a bit of vote inflation going on.

last I heard, about a month ago, he had two firm offers, but as Jia Caldwell can tell you, offeres are withdrawn at the drop of a hat. Anything could have happened between then and now.

Every game Saints players score points in the best and fairest.
Dunny only played 12 games for starters and he was inconsistent.

He probably got votes in both the brownlow and the best and fairest when he :
Had 13 tackles and 7 clearances against North.
Had 10 tackles and 12 contested possessions against Adelaide.
Had 17 contested possessions against Richmond.
Had 10 clearances and 13 contested possessions against Collingwood.
Had 10 clearances and 15 contested possessions against Carlton.

Most of his other games were unremarkable.

Meanwhile Saints players were polling best and fairest votes while we were smacked by sides in the first half of the season, when the Umpires didn't even notice we had any players.

I don’t know about anyone else. But the “vote inflation “ made it really boring.

I think as a spectacle. The winner getting mid 20 votes - makes it such a better event.

Wynd in '92. Unless you count Goodes as a forward (he's in the mid category for me).
Thanks mate - no, Goodes is a mid in my mind.
Thats actually quite amazing, 30 years. I'd love the focus to shift but with how the game is played and mids doing offensive and defensive work now I dont think it will.
Good to see Sharman get some recognition in the last though.

apart from Jack Steele our better brownlow performerss are Seb Ross and Jack Billings. Both had poor years this season. {Hannaberry of course has over 100 votes, none earned at St.Kilda though}.
