What about how low Essendon crowds will be too. Essendon have a challenging draw and their clash with Fremantle in about 6 weeks time looks like being < 20,000.
Essendon's crowds will never go as low as North's as they have a way bigger fan base!

Last Thursday’s Richmond v Carlton season opener, which saw an average audience of 365,000, was the second-best average audience for a season opener in subscription television history. Other Round One highlights included:

  • Adelaide v Geelong was the number two game of the round with an average audience of 335,000 and the highest rating clash for this fixture since 2016.
  • Saturday night’s Essendon v Hawthorn and Brisbane v Sydney games had a cumulative audience of 365,000, up 15% on the cumulative audience of Round 1 Saturday night in 2019 (Bulldogs v Sydney and Brisbane v West Coast) and up 46% on Round 1 Saturday night last year (GWS v Geelong and Gold Coast v Port Adelaide).
  • Sunday night’s West Coast v Gold Coast game had an average audience of 239,000, up 18% on 2019 Round 1 Sunday night average (Fremantle v North Melbourne) and up 9% on last year (West Coast v Melbourne).

Carl V Coll - 51,723

Happy to stand corrected if that's incorrect but that's a pretty low crowd for 2 big teams when capacity was upped to 75%. Was tipping at least in the 60's
As mentioned in earlier threads, we can rightly expect crowds to disappoint in 2021 whilst there are restrictions and procedures in place.

Simply, arrangements to secure tickets are frustrating and tedious, not to mentioned new barrier of this week where patrons required to scan in a QR code.

In addition, fans are often reluctant to plan well out from game day and decide on match day whether they in fact will go.

Then the older folk are still nervous about attending under any circumstances.

Watch the crowds really drop off for teams that start to struggle and don’t look like making finals over the next 3-5 weeks.

Agree with your post wholeheartedly. I know the older folk just wanna scan in and watch footy.
I guess most of us haven't watched footy live in Vic since 2019 and with the new season upon us, my thinking was nothing would stop supporters from going. Curious to see Hawks v Tiges on Sunday, ill be there but that too could be lower than initially thought.

Yes, I still expect something around 50-55K on Sunday.

My gut feel is that tonight’s crowd on a standard Thursday night would’ve drawn 65-70,000. It drew 52K so this is basically 25% below expected.

Usually I’d expect 60-65,000 on Sunday. So it may EBS up only low 50’s.

There are going to be some really poor crowds as the season unfolds for dull fixtures where a team / teams are not in finals contention. Given the extra hoops, why would you bother unless you’re a diehard?!

All this registering for tkts, QR codes, downloading app and scanning in to know your whereabouts surely is pivving people off.
Nonetheless, I did expect more than 51K
I didn't Crowd: 51,723 at the MCG is about right - anyone thinking over 60,000 on a normal Thursday night had rocks in their head.

I also think all the stuffing around that fans esp the older ones have to do to get a ticket and get into the ground will have a negative impact on crowds for at least half the season if not all year! Much easier to sit back and relax at home on the couch and save money.

Might, just might get close to 75 -80,000 on Anzac Day

The capacity limitations, even though they have just been upped to 75%, make you think games will be sold out even when they aren't. Wlil deter some people from even checking.

Fair enough that's your opinion if that's what you expected but many who I have spoken to, and listening on radio, TV etc all were talking 60-70K, remember this is RD 2 and 2 arch-rivals going at it. IMHO I still reckon 51k is on the lower side, but like Dave10 said guess there will be some crowds that will pull lower than expected plus some howlers too as the season progresses.

Agree with your second point for the older folk but not only them, those who aren't rusted on or hardcore it could be just too hard and happy to kick back at home and watch it.

Gil hoping for 100% caapcity for Anzac day, that would be awesome but of course, cases would need to remain at zero.

Spot on! If you went on Ticketek for carl v coll many bays said limited availability and single seats, only level 4 middle to back available.
This would no doubt deter people. Anyway, it is what it is and I can't wait until footy folk can go to the footy without all this hoo haa!

Carlton v Collingwood drew 69K in 2019

Not surprising it has drawn 18K less in a year with people being wary of covid and both teams looking like they won’t make the 8.

Re ANZAC Day, after even if we’re back to 100%, it will likely not sell out.

Although of all the games in the forseable future, it’s the most likely to challenge full house status.. Unless Essendon by then looks a bottom 2 side as appears possible.

My early read, assuming Essendon have a couple of wins by then which is unlikely, a crowd of around 75-80,000 is likely.

How good is it we’re discussing, debating and arguing about crowds😄👍

Thursday night scheduling also impacts the crowd.

In 2019 Essendon drew ‘only’ 25,000 to Marvel against the Giants in a run of the mill Thursday night clash with Essendon struggling outside the eight trying to get back on the winners list again.. That crowd would usually be 28-30,000 on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday at this venue.

Thus, if you add 15% to last nights crowd we get back to ~58-60,000 which is well below the expected 70-75,000 which I think we largely agree is attributable to COVID barriers etc.
