Even with those three losses were 6th, and with Geelong, we go to 7th. But I completely disagree with those losses. We just finished the Blues off, Essendon we had more control and more scoring shots, and we missed a lot of opportunities against the Saints (as they did against us). The biggest area where you arguements falls apart is when you talk about the games we lost badly, mainly Hawthorn, GCS, and Saints. The fact of the matter is that we didn't lose badly against top 8 teams. We didn't get smashed in contested ball against top 8 teams, we didn't get smashed in defensive 1 v 1 against top 8 teams, and we didn't enter the forward 50 badly against top 8 teams (except the last game of the year).

Our biggest weakness this year wasn't any stat. It was our mindset VS the lesser teams of the year. The second time we faced Freo, GWS(honestly we went to water against them in the finals, I barely count it) , and GCS we showed them that them beating us was pure fluke. The issue is that they beat us in the first place.
Look, I know I am on the more pessimistic side of things and happy to call it a gut feeling but I just don't see us playing finals next year unless the young kids somehow make a great step up in development or we trade in some new talent to fill our gaps

Would be elated to be wrong

Forget being in the conversation - Petracca, Oliver, Lever are already in the All Australian team this year. So you're hoping that those players of the same age might reach the level that Melbourne's are already at.

Melbourne can also go through and list "1st-3rd year players with improvement potential" and young fringe prospects who haven't proved much but through rose tinted glasses could be anything.

Again, I am not saying our list is crap, just that some serious perspective may be required when there are a bunch of other teams that also have young players.
Yep, Im hoping..
We've done nothing but draft for the last 4-5 years. That will start to show more and more over the next few years.
I reckon Mills should improve on this year - played injured (achilies) most of the year and it was his first year in the midfield
Heeney should improve with some good luck with injuries
Paps is AA and at that level we need.
I reckon a lot rides with Paddy Mac.. If he gets on the list, If he stays fit and If he plays to his potential as a KPP. Lots of Ifs!! but If (one more haha) he plays a a KPF, then a forward line of Paddy, McDonald, Amartey (mobile tall 2nd ruck), Heeney, Paps, Hayward + a defensive forward in Wicks or Sheather?? makes a pretty damaging forward line from 2023 onwards.

Mids are probably lacking an elite player. Parker, Mills are great, but we'll need the young crew to seriously step up.
Im not as worried about our back 6 as many on here (I probably should be). Think team defence goes a long way, ive faith in recruiters and coaching staff to find what we need, and also Swans structures are very solid.

Im thinking 2022/23 trade periods are when we can afford (both $$ and draft picks) to attack trades and free agency to fill holes.. And then seriously start to compete. Until then, it should very enjoyable watching the development, and Ill back us to win a lot more than lose.

If you want to build a premiership team you have to start at the backline. Nearly every year the premiers are the team rated in the top 2 in defence in the comp, so that is the first thing that you need to get right. I think our defence is generally pretty good, but it misses a couple of key personnel. Until we get that right we won't seriously challenge.

Obviously, having a strong midfield also helps with defence, so that is the second piece to get right. That includes the ruck. If your midfield continually wins clearances then they will usually kick goals as well, which is why the forwards are really just the cream on top. If the midfield loses clearances then you need a strong defence - see my first point.

All this means that our number one priority should be our backline, our second priority our ruck/midfield, and our last consideration should be forwards.

Agree. Everyone bar the work experience kid knows Melican is a spud and will always let us down. We cannot have a good defence with him

Lets see see if we can get a 4th Rounder

Swans delisted Brand (good decision) - Need to find a KPD to improve on Brand - shouldn't be hard.. Melican?

I was chatting with the work experience kid and we reckon if Melican has a good run with injury he can play a role while T McCartin and Van Rooyen develop. The work experience kid also heard a rumour that the Swans were going trade in a KPD to play Melicans role in the b22

so, Melican to replace Brand
Trade to replace Melican
Van Rooyen + McCartin to win the flag in 2023

Melican has zero trade value. As long as we are paying him minimum I’m fine with him being on the list, as long as he is used as an injury cover

I think the club knows that its Melican's 7th year on the list and he is pretty much is what he is at this point. Basically a backup KPD at best. Hoping that he would be the next Grundy story would be half a miracle. Still have mares of Melican getting tossed aside by Hogan 1 on 1.

Go for Van Rooyen and back him in? Who knows, we might be able to draft Gibcus with the best case scenario.

I was just going to talk about Melican the same way we've been talking about Reid for the last decade

"He's good, he just needs a good run with injury"
"He's good, he just needs to settle. He's never been able to play with the same defence for a long stretch of time"

I genuinely like Melican but am really feeling like he'll never make it. He's contracted for 2 more seasons either way so he has that long to prove his worth

Improvement is almost impossible to predict. We could of seen a false start an not be top 8 for the next 10 years. We could improve drastically and win the grandfinal next year. There's too many factors.
100% agree, the view of relying on "natural" improvement/progession of our talented kids to take us to the promised land is a bit of a false hope. Who knows where ceilings are, when and if they are ever realised and will they even still be on our list at the peak of their powers?? Who knows, it's crystal ball stuff. I agree with the majority who believe in our young blokes and the clubs ability to get the most out of them. That said we still desperately need to recruit established talent if we are to even consider top 4 and premiership aspirations. Full back, yes please! Ruckman good thanks! Full forward hell why not!?

Melican to Dogs. Daniels to us in platform shoes...

Back page todays Age:
Sydney could attempt to secure a player in exchange for 24-year-old Dawson, who had a breakout year in 2021 when he finished third in the club best and fairest.
Riley Thilthorpe? Ben Keays? Chayce Jones? Will Hamill? Darcy Fogarty? Jordan Butts?
So who would be a 'fair' swap??

Not sure we would get Riley Thilthorpe but worth a try.

It's amazing how little I want any of Adelaide's players...

Could we make a player out of Darcy Fogarty?

Has mainly been a disappointment, but has decent skills, just needs more of the ball????
