Its a nice position to be in having the spare spot now, even better we don't have a super urgent need to fill it (touch wood on injuries). There are a lot of footballers around that have not had a real crack over the last 2 years of a full season of consistent footy. There are probably a few diamonds in the rough that will start to shine with some regular footy. I'm for looking at a KPP, development player, a little how we took Lane know he has potential but is a few years away. We are a destination club (what ever that means) but through Covid QLD is also a destination community given the migration now happening with the borders open. We could fill the position now if we thought another club might get the one we have an eye on or I think we can wait to see half a season of footy and back ourselves to win a player over. I'd rather take the punt on a kid while we can, than try to recycle a player know the limit on.

I wonder if it is correct to assume that the longer we go without naming a supplementary player, the less likely we're looking for someone who is "ready to go". I'd think that if the club wanted immediate depth, they would be signing someone quickly so that they can do a decent preseason of some description and be available early on.

Of course, the risk is signing someone early is if you sign one type of player and then cop an injury to another type of player - eg the Suns signing Tsitas and then King going down.

Yeah that's some shitty luck/timing by the Sun's.

Hopefully Rory Thompson is back from injury (if so) they could push Lukosius forward and also have Chol and Sam Day so they might be alright. Also have Levi Casboult waiting in the wings which I guess is the exact reason why they brought him in, as well as being cover for Witts.

Cal Twomey on SEN this morning saying Ashcroft is the mist likely #1 at this early time of the year

I think he’s probably the safest bet, there’s a couple other guys that if they hit their potential probably edge him for number 1. Can’t see him dropping out of the top 3 though

This ended up being a pretty fantastic draft for us.

Add this to the ever increasing highlights reel for Lohmann.

I remember the media especially Twomey saying we took Cobra Kai too high he rated him as a late 2nd round draft pick how good was he this season seriously stiff not to be the rising star

Looking back, we rated Blake Howes very highly, but he got grabbed right before our third pick. He only started getting games at Melbourne this year. I wonder how that one turns out. While it'd be fair to say our wings are a spot we can improve on, it's been good having Fletcher come in there, and perhaps Levi or Marshall will take the other wing next season.

So true, compare ours to the 5 picks inside 30 that Richmond took in that draft. I don't think anyone in their list has established themselves yet to the level Wilmot and Lohmann have done for us so far. The drafting and recruiting team deserve all the kudos for this one.

The thing is that we're not working with enough knowledge to make any real judgements on a lot of that - we don't know how Kai was rated by other clubs, we don't know whether we did try and make trades to change our position etc..

People tend to worry too much about min-maxing the draft at times when in the end it's about bringing in the players you rate. In the end we rated Kai higher than a bunch of other guys that the media did rate and that may or may turn out to be a good decision but I think even with questions of positioning you can't really judge until further along the line.

For reference, look at the discussion thread about the 2017 draft and people were complaining about us taking Bailey at 15 instead of leaving him to 18 and going "who?" about picking Starcevich.

Stress less now basically, meltdown in three years (if necessary).
Just wanted to bump this excellent post.

The tune changed quite quickly anyway once it started emerging that Kai was going in the next 2-4 picks anyway. :D
