Pick 5: Neil Erasmus
Height: 188cm Weight: 80kg* (WAFL Website - note he might be bigger than these numbers)
Club: Subiaco Lions
Strengths: Marking, Big possession winner, position versatility, above average in nearly all categories including footskills, ball handling, speed, endurance etc.
Weaknesses: Standout weapon, can become a little messy with disposal in traffic

Reasons for choice: I had a few players tied on points, these being Erasmus, Finn Callaghan, Josh Gibcus, Mac Andrew and Josh Rachelle. I was expecting to have to have the choice of Callaghan pre-mock draft and he was probably the closest competitor with respect to tie-breaking. In the end I went with Erasmus because:

• More Fail Safe - I think unlike others Erasmus is more likely to make 100 games than any of the others in the same bracket. Whilst he doesn't really have a standout weapon apart from his around the ground marking, he is above average in lots of categories and his average possession count this year for the games he played showed that he consistently finds lots the football.
• More versatile - Whilst I think his best position will probably be in the middle of the ground, he equally has the tools to be useful off the flanks or wing.

I want to emphasize though that the distance wasn't that far between him and the next player.

Dynamic midfield with toughness and outside run he would fall under, but note that with Top 10 picks I would go best available talent rather than any needs based assessment. As noted elsewhere I did consider Mac Andrew not on the basis of rucking but again because he was in that bracket of talent, but I decided not to on the basis he was not a superly fail safe option in comparison, and I don't think that Gold Coast can afford to be that risky with their selections. Gibcus was gone but to be honest I wasn't going to take him, again because whilst he is a much safer option that Andrew I also consider him a little one-dimensional (but a really good player nevertheless).

Edit* because everyone is going to ask about the Finn Callaghan comparison as well: for mine as a midfielder Erasmus has averaged not only a lot more possessions (just less than 30s for Erasmus versus just less than 20s of Callaghan; acknowledging a different level of competition but still playing similar positions) but also more ability around the ground with his marking; IMO Erasmus is a much better mark which helps his versatility a lot. And I have them about the same for disposal, speed etc. Callaghan looks bigger but Erasmus is possibly more agile and just at good through the core.

Gold Coast’s number of recent top 10 picks along with a stacked hand already for 2022, normal “best available” rules seem less relevant.

What this exercise shows me is that Gold Coast should explore trading down a few spots if Richmond are biting.

And with Callaghan being such as well publicised top 4 pick, I would think there would be a number of takers.

Josh had an unbelievable year albeit playing only the 5 games.
The young man has already got an impressive resume as he was named Captain of not only the APS team of the year, but the NAB League Team of the year as well.

He was able to average over 30 possessions to go along with 5 marks and 5 tackles per game highlighting his tenacious want for the ball in a contest but also his 2 way running ability.

Josh covers the ground really well and is always getting from contest to contest easily, showcasing his beautiful mix of inside and outside capabilities. He is not the quickest player out there on the field but nowhere near the slowest. Would love to teach him how to be more damaging in the front half and start kicking goals to go along with his high possession high clearance game, but I'm sure that will come with time in a full time football environment.

At heart, he is a ball winning, high possession, clearance mid, but he also has a very well rounded game and his skills and vision help his team get the ball out and away from the contest and moving forward and he is very much a team first man.
His disposal is very good and his awareness in traffic and game IQ shines through in almost every passage of play he is involved in whether its bursting through traffic, a quick handball to a team mate or hitting up a leading forward he generally makes the right decision.

I was surprised he got to this pick and could not have selected him fast enough, as i believe he would fit into the young Richmond midfield brigade very easily and be the Cotchin replacement that we will soon need.

Tyler is an inside/ outside midfielder who had a topsy turvy mini season.
However his form as a 16 year old was fantastic and I really liked his game for Box Hill this year- 24 disposals 2 goals and was not fazed by bigger bodies.
Tyler kicks the footy well, is clean under pressure with good decision making skills and has the rare knack of being able to make something happen.

This decision came down to Tyler or Mitch Knevitt. I just feel that Sonsie is too classy to pass up. Knevitt is the big body inside mid that the bombers crave but Sonsie is the better footballer for mine.

Sonsie will begin his career much like Archie Perkins and play that high half forward role and will get some midfield minutes as the season moves on.
ironically I think Perkins might be the big strong young inside mid the bombers can develop.

If Tyler develops he can be a similar player to Trent Cotchin
