Yes he could be best available for our pick but in this case I would rather go with the next best available if he fills a need. No point drafting players that you already have a good supply of, especially since the half backs we have are also on the younger side so they won't need replacing for quite some time.

Rather go for an inside mid if we are not in the mix for a defender. Either an inside mid or one of the the defenders should be the go and not a half back, a KP defender. I'd say half back would be the last on our needs list

Who is in the plethora that can play lockdown and also rebound that will be there in the next 5 years?
Players that have been defenders or apart of the backline.
Rampe - close to the end
Fox - a bit part player, isn’t a long term answer.
Mills - moved to the midfield
Carruthers- delisted
Gould - hasn’t been given a game in 2 years, question marks whether he’ll make it.
Dawson - gone
Campbell- will eventually end up in the midfield or forward in a year or 2.

McInerney and Blakey, not to mention Campbell who isn't in the team yet.

If you want to replace Dawson you do know he basically played as a wingman right?

I actually like the player, just not sure he's the type we need. Better not be 3 defender types for the 3 picks, that would be an average outcome.

Pick 19 - Campbell Chesser
Pick 19 - Melbourne - Mitchito O……wait maybe I shouldn’t be petty as Melbourne couldn’t have their own NGA player

The real pick

Pick 19 - Melbourne - Campbell Chesser
186cm 83kg - Balanced Midfielder/Half Back

Was between he and Wilmot for this Pick and since Wilmot went the pick before it made this selection very easy

Chesser was very unlucky getting injured at a bad time, he was superb in a practise game at the start of the year and was one of the better players in Round 1 blockbuster against Oakleigh. Although he hasn’t been able to show that dash he was known for in under 16s he still showed some impressive form as a hardworking and classy wingman who barely made a mistake showing great composure with ball in hand and his heat map would likely involve touches all over the ground despite playing on a wing for most of it.

Seeing Chesser slide this far shows that people either don’t remember his under 16s form or didn’t see it and didn’t watch him in Round 1 before the injury. Could be the steal of the draft he he drifts this far in the real thing, a footballer with great all round athleticism should be a big tick for recruiters.

Mcinerney is a winger.. he ain’t playing lockdown defender in the back pocket. Blakey will take dawsons role. Completely different players to Wilmot, who fills a need in the Sydney side and would play games early next year.

Nope, Blakey was playing half back towards the end of 2021 and he was really good at it. We have tried Blakey as a key forward, a winner, even an inisde mid for a short period, none of it worked, but the moment we moved him to half back it just clicked and he was an entirely different player.

He wouldn't get near the side next year, as it is we have Campbell not in the side and Warner didn't make our finals side.

Dawson has played half back and wing over the past 2-3 years.

His best football coincided with him being a full time winger basically this year, pushing forward. Blakely coming in across HB helped that transition. Was close to the best winger in the comp in the last half a year (him or Seedsman take your pick).

As I said really like the player but why not trade back if that's the target, just feel he's not the player that suits us that's all.

Huh. Where is that footage from - 2019 U16 champs? Any idea if that's still available somewhere?

Players/ coaches would likely have access via HUDL

I know that, I was one of the first on the dawson bandwagon, one of my favorite players to watch.... hence saying have been apart of the backline in the past, no so much the season just gone. He’s still been a half back option if needed. Van rooyen was the number 1 target to play as a defender but got taken the pick before. Wilmot will go around this mark on draft night, highly rated player.

Each to their own, just feel Sydney are the least likely to take a general defender we have quite a few. Inside mid or a KP defender. I'd actually be annoyed if we went too different to that in the draft, and that isn't saying Willnot isn't a good player. Just don't see how he'd even go close to getting a game and that's not just this year.

What’s Warner got do with playing back pocket.. both those players don’t play the role wilmot can/will. So they don’t really coincide with each other in the depth chart.

We have players that will fit in that role, and players just outside the side as it is. We don't have a million free positions and that is even with Hewett and Dawson going, we will also fit Ladhams in somewhere. Can't see him playing early, there would be plenty ahead.

My wife teaches Owens... And has never heard anyone call him anything other than Mitch..
That’s what I thought aswell but had people like Cal Twomey referring to him as Mitchito so I’ll follow suit.

Pick 20 - Mitch Owens
Pick 20 - Brisbane - Mitch Owens
190cm
Sandringham Dragons

I'm sorry Saints fans. I'll try and shift the blame to andleanback & eDPS who took the two players I wanted at this pick.

I am a big Owens fan though and as much as I think he'll probably end up at the Saints, it's hard to justify having him so high on my board and not taking him here. I was very close to going in another direction but I'll keep that under wraps in case something crazy happens later in the draft.

Owens has a pretty intriguing skill set. I see him as a defensive winger early days where I can see his intercept marking being a real asset. I think it'll be important for him to really build up his tank and so the first few preseasons will be really key for him. The defensive part of his game is solid so I think that raises his floor. The real value comes if his offensive output develops even further.

I've quoted a short comment from after the Victorian Challenge game below which highlights a few other features of his game that I really value.

Owens was a late in to the Victorian Challenge game but made the most of his opportunity. He's got good size and athleticism which allows him to be a real threat aerially. He really attacks it in the air and can intercept and pull down some contested marks. What also impresses me is his ability to follow up and impact the contest when the ball goes to ground. He's pretty fearless in his attack on the footy and is willing to put his head over it and fight for the contested ball. He's a pretty safe user by foot and can be a pretty craft finisher around goals. Owens has some really appealing tools.
