Went and watched the game today, there’s not much in the cupboard that’s for sure, pretty depressing when a non aligned club pulls an AFL aligned clubs pants down.

Have to say the recruiting has been shithouse since Libba took over, we are in all
Sorts of trouble.
To be fair it hasn’t helped that he’s had virtually no picks to work with.

Which is why it’s actually good we’ve got spots for the mid season draft. Gives us two goes at youngsters this year. Could hopefully make up in some way for not going so much in the drafts the last couple of years. Hopefully we find a couple.

Byrnes was good but we didn’t see much of that explosive pace he has. Good to see he’s getting his hands on the ball though that’s the main thing.

Maybe doesnt have the confidence to go for it yet after the hamstring surgery?

Might need another game at that level before stepping up to the faster pace of AFL.

If you rock up at the start of the third quarter, the gates are usually unmanned.
Meaning, entry is free.
Otherwise entry is (or was) $10.

Has anyone done this as of yet

Still jealous of other teams recruiting.. Hawthorn’s young forwards
- Emerson Jeka 19 y/o, 197cm (2019 rookie draft pick 9), looks a gun
- Jacob Koschitzke 20 y/o, 196cm (2018 draft pick 52), kicked 5 goals last week
- Michell Lewis 22 y/o, 198cm (2016 draft pick 76), 20 goals in 2019

We have:
- Max King, 20 y/o, 202cm (2018 draft pick 4), is a gun but plays in a disfunctional forward line and being crushed by big packs on a weekly basis
- Josh Battle, 22 y/o, 193cm (2016 draft pick 36), a little small for key position, but is being played in backline/wing.
- Matt Allison, 19 y/o, 195cm (2020 draft pick 26), not sure if he is key forward or wing, did not impress at VFL. Got 6 possessions last week playing on the wing.

So in summary we invested heavily in forwards by drafting them at 4, 36 and 26. Max King and Battle are not developing as well as they should be.. often playing in a disfunctional forward line or not at all in Battle’s case. Allison at this stage looks like a bust.. Hawthorn’s Jeka at the same age looks a gun..

We really need to fix:
1. Our drafting, Allison was a complete punt.
2. Development, VFL team is competitive and plays a same brand as seniors
3. Senior team plays a competent game style, and can score and defend using a functional game plan.. not pure relying on tackling/turn overs to win games.

Bit early to suggest Allison is a bust 2 games in but I do think the selection was a strange one.

Sadly there appears to be something in what you say IMO. However to early to bag Allison yet and i dont believe you were saying this last year...how much of all of it is a knee jerk reaction to the short team failure we are experiencing at the moment...albeit if we keep failing what is said may be closer to the mark. Obviously most of us fear we will keep failing this year hence ..the outlook that everything done is a bust or not living up to expectation. Really though its three very bad games.......which understandably to Saints people spells doom!!

If it’s 3 games we were competitive in, that’s a complete difference story. We got smashed from start to finish and looked like a rabble. That proves to me that the coaches have absolutely no idea.. inheriting a similar game style as Richo.. it worked ok in a shortened game, with little injury, hub life and prior to the recent rule change.. but now we look a bottom 2 team after 6 games.. The game plan was flawed to start with as many pundits pointed out, it only works when you are winning the midfield or can force turnovers.. we can’t do either this year.. hence the doom and gloom..

That much is clear.. we need a big shake up in all 3 departments

1. Recruitment - it’s ok to recruit older players for depth for the senior side, but we also have little or no young players coming through VFL
2. VFL coaching - play the same long bomb to no one crap style as AFL side
3. AFL coaching - No structure or cohesiveness as a unit.. Ratten needs to find a solution quick, because this year is slipping away..

I think injuries have played a decent role in us looking as though we have no young players coming through.

Byrnes is coming off a decent stint on the sideline but has looked solid. A full AFL side would likely see Bytel and Highmore in the VFL instead of missing out all together.

I do agree we need to add to that though. Only picking one midfielder in the top 40 over 5 years is a mistake IMO.

Last year's draft had many of us scratching our heads. I noticed Caleb Poulter had 28 touches for the Pies VFL side on the weekend.

If it was depth we were after in the key forward department I'd have preferred we took one late in the draft.

I do think it was a smart move to leave spots open for the mid season draft this year where it looks as though we will add a couple of 19 year olds. Hopefully we use them well.

A lot is riding on Allison. When we spent all off-season insisting that we would absolutely be taking a first round pick to the draft, I did not think it was to pick up an unremarkable key forward whose progress looks more appropriate for a rookie or project player than a first round draft pick.

how long as Allison been there compared to the 3 hawks players ya listed... at least give him a chance to get going before we write him off

I thought Allison was thought to have the potential to develop a big tank. And thus to become a midfielder/winger of a good size. At least
that was the theory at the time. Still pretty early. But I wouldn't pigeon-hole him as a key forward.
that's a good call. It'd be interesting if he could become a big bodied mid for us.
