B Francis - Ambrose/BZT - Ridley
HB Redman - Hurley - Smith
C Langford - McGrath - Merrett
HF Snelling - Stewart - Perkins
F Tippa - Wright - Stringer
R Draper - Parish - Shiel
Int. Laverde - Heppell - Caldwell - Hind
Emg. Clarke - Zaharakis - Guelfi - Hooker
I like this line-up. By year's end it would be great to see Cox replace Laverde.

OK - Im putting veterans Zakka, Ambrose & Hooker on ice for the early rounds so we can see some new faces in the line-up. Would love to see Hind, Caldwell, Perkins & 2MP line up round 1, and I think they probably all will. I'd like to see something like;-

Francis Zerk Redman
Ridley Hurley Hind
Heppell McGrath Merrett
Langford Stewart Snelling
Stringer 2MP Tippa

Draper Parish Shiel

Bench: Smith Caldwell Perkins Laverde

Archies the one who can play

Im not sure it will be round 1 after 15 months off and then 3 months of AFL about 2 before Preseason games its a long bow to play early and id prefer to get more of a base behind him so we dont overload his body early.

I actually think he probably starts his career next year a bit as a wingmen

It might be a case early in the year where he builds up a base and see how his body reaponds then starts entering in round 4-6 and Heppell progresses from outside to in

Thinm he can also play fwd id rather see his name after round 5 in ahead of Zacka if somehow hes stillq getting a gig but might be a difficult spot to fit in with Wright, Stewart, Stringer , Laverde (Who i want to see given a big go especially if he gets through nicely in PS for once, allows Stringer to a greater midfield role)

The rotation of Draper, Wright, Stewart, Stringer, Laverde will be important probably dont want all 5 on the field at once too often they dont have the best defending capabilities

I dont want to see much of Hind across half back i think we look to find form in Redman and ive said enough of wanting Zac Merrett there a real opportunity in a year for us to try something different and his traits work there if hes willing to buy in

Future 22:
Redman Brand Johnson
Ham Reid Ridley

Merrett McGrath Shiel
Draper Caldwell Parish

Mosquito Cox Perkins
Cahill Eyre Jones

Langford Laverde Francis Hird
Shiels still playing but Stringer and Dev Smith arent? Or are you expecting a sudden drop off from them with Devon injuries and Stringer heavily reliant on explosiveness which probably goes as he hits 30-31 (still only 26)

Tippa also same age as Shiel

B: Redman - Ambrose - Francis
HB: Ridley - Hurley - McGrath
C: Shiel - Heppell - Langford
HF: Laverde - Stewart - Snelling
F: Stringer - Wright - Walla
R: Draper - Parish - Merrett

Int. Hind - Caldwell - Perkins - Smith
Emg. Hooker / Ham / Clarke / Zaka

Hooker could come in to play out the goal square if 2MP ends up out of form or just not cutting it, but otherwise feel he is in the twilight. Guelfi and Zaka both loyal servants but shouldn't be best 22 given our squad. Ham I still have hopes for but needs to find improvement somewhere as he's currently stalled at "top-end VFL player". Smith needs a chance to find form but feels the most vulnerable in this 22 if he keeps mugging it up. McGrath will obviously have stints in the middle but feel he is the guy most likely when we need a lockdown job down back on a small forward (which releases Ridley/Francis from doing jobs they're not suited too) and he also has the speed and endurance to help balance out what is a fairly tall defense.

Starting midfield is all about who is best equipped to play a role. Heppell is still the bloke most likely to put an effective block on, Parish is still our best pill extractor by a fair margin (although hoping Caldwell can come in and keep him honest), and Merrett is still our best kick moving off from the pack and putting it into 50 (at least, he'll butcher it a lot less than Shiel).

Feel this would be our most damaging round 1 team. What will be telling is whether we go straight to blooding any of the kids instead (Cox/Jones/Johnson), which I wouldn't complain about. So long as Cutler never gets near this 22 again, we'll be travelling OK.

Tippa is my favourite player. Something is not right with him...his performances are dropping off significantly.

With Smith I feel like he doesn't have a spot in the team unless he becomes good at playing small defender role and with Stringer, see comments about Tippa.

Shiel is an out and out gun.

If Ambrose starts in the R1 team next year as a KPD, we might as well shut the gates at the club, and walk away.

We now have lots and lots of better options than him. He is no.1 candidate to get delisted.
Hed be our clear best one on one defender and by a long way

Forward line players output generally comes from what happens up the field, not sure our i50s were great? Also i think without alot of other weaponary (Daniher, Fantasia, Stringer, Laverde, Dev Smith) teams have only had to focus on him.

No doubt maybe hes been worked out a bit and that maybe wouldve taken longer with those guys around him taking some of the focus

Goals are drying up in general and when your playing in a side that doesnt get a whole lot of i50s or have other player for teams to focus on then i think it will have an impact

I'm by no means a big fan of Ambrose, and agree he is a chance of being delisted end of 2021. But by "we now have lots and lots of better options" for R1, I truly hope you aren't referring to our draftees?

In what bizarre world is Draper not our #1 ruck?

EDIT: Just realized that he didn't have Stringer or Langford either. My God.

Laverde or Jones is a toughy. I'd really like to see both have a go. Probably Jones in the 2s for now, building chemistry with Eyre, Cox and Cahill.

I think I'd play Hooker alongside Reid in the 2s as well. Games into BZT so we can see how much more development he has in him before Reid is ready. Hooker can coach Reid onfield. That allows Ambrose to go one-on-one with the monsters.

Tom Cutler on a back flank. 😍

Each passing season I become more and more convinced that the person behind AFL N,TR&R page is actually a cunning troll account who has set himself up to play the long game.
It’s a very, very long game he is playing.

AFL:

B: Redman, Hurley, Francis
HB: Ridley, BZT, Cox (if his pre-season goes well) or Hind
C: Laverde, Heppell, Langford
HF: Perkins (if his pre-season goes well) or Smith, Stewart, Jones (we gotta get games into him)
F: Walla, Wright, Stringer
FOL: Draper, Merrett, Shiel
Int: McGrath, Caldwell, Parish, Ambrose

VFL:

B: Guelfi, Brand, Gleeson? (could maybe play him in the seniors off the bench?)
HB: ?, Reid, ?
C: ?, Clarke, Hird?
HF: ?, Hooker, ?
F: Cahill, Eyre, Johnson?
FOL: Bryan, ?, ?
Int: Phillips, ?, ?, ?

I haven't really looked at the list enough to know where people would be playing in the VFL. If Cox and Perkins aren't good to go for Round 1, you probably play the former on the half back flank and the latter in the center or as a follower.

EDIT: Somehow forgot about Merrett lol, so that solves the last AFL interchange spot.

I have mine very close to yours, except I'd have it like this:

FB: Redman, Hurley, Hind
HB: Ridley, Hooker, Francis
C: Merrett, Parish, Heppell
HF: Langford, Stewart, Perkins
FF: Stringer, Wright, Walla
R: Draper, McGrath, Shiel
Inter: Caldwell, Zaharakis, Smith, Laverde
Emergency: Jones, Phillips, Ambrose, Snelling

Zaharakis will start the year in the best 22, but very close between him and Snelling. Ambrose needs to ease into it so we can get him AFL ready. I suspect his place in the side will be based on match ups as he is a decent stopper. Ham would have to work his way up after he builds an AFL ready body. Laverde will start over Jones, but I think Jones will pass him by the end of the year. Hind will start over Guelfi, but I can see the two vying for the same spot.

Not a bad side if we line up like that.

I don’t disagree that Zaha will get a game before Ham but I just look at the side and see no running. We need two genuine wingers. Looking at a few dynasty sides, in Hawthorn and Tigers Smith, Hill, McIntosh, Bolton and Pickett have been some big time performers for them in executing their unique gameplans.
