Yeah that’s basically what I’m saying though, there really isn’t anything Port can offer that Essendon can’t match
Which is why it comes down to him wanting to leave.

If he wants to go and nominates Port then you have the choice of first round compo pick or our first this year and next.

Thats the best we can offer and if he is adamant he is leaving you will have to accept one of the two.

Fair enough, will be interesting how it plays out. Didn’t mean to stir anything up just wanted to point out that we’ve got a fair bit of cash to match anything. I’ll step out now 👍

You guys should know all too well that you may have to give up a quality player to get a quality player i.e Wingard/Burton.

Has any team not matched an offer just because they thought the other party wouldn’t be able to offer something decent? We played hardball holding out for pick 7 for Saad, we’d be holding out for something more substantial than that for Merrett. Not trying to come in here sounding like a prick but that’s just the way I can see it going down.

We didn't so much give up Wingard as maybe felt he would have more chance of forefilling his potential elsewhere. There wasn't the sense of lost outsiders may of thought we felt.

Something reasonable will be worked out if you look at previous players who have come over from the Bombers to Port. The Bombers don't play hard ball and everyone gets here.

Muffins Colquohoun for Merrett

Matt Arnott/Todd Elton etc.

Port has been stockpiling cap spend for a few years and have a weird list balance where we have a host of older about to retire stars and very young stars.

there’s been reports from good sources for a while that port has made a front loaded offer to Merrett that has blown everyone out of the water. Maybe dons could come close to a match, but they couldn’t front load it. The story was it would make Merrett one of the highest paid in the league for the next two years.

if dons have a chance to keep him, it won’t be based on cash, they’ll have to make an appeal to his other sensibilities. Players often turn down cash for where their heart lies.
If his heart isn’t with dons, and there looks to be a good chance it isn’t, then you’re going to lose him.

I can’t see dons actually matching what port would have on the table, and a compo pick would be worth more than our picks are. Having said that I’m not sure dodoro makes decisions based on the same logic others might.

Edit: Philthy beat me to it...

I think you underestimate just how much we can offer. We've been one of the biggest under spenders for years, which has accumulated, we then have Motlop, Rockliff & HH all coming out of big deals. We could offer Merrett huge, huge, money, and realistically it is very unlikely you can match it.

Free Agency was introduced so players who wanted a flag had the opportunity to switch clubs and get one without having to be hamstrung by the fact that premiership contending teams don't have the trade collateral to make it worth the while of the club that is losing the player. It's why Adelaide didn't match the Brad Crouch offer from St Kilda - they had no justification for doing so because they couldn't legitimately claim they were a contender, even though they would have known the contract details and known that they weren't getting anything more than a second round pick.

Using a guy like Saad, who didn't qualify for free agency because he had already been traded to Essendon from Gold Coast, as an example of how the Bombers can play hardball in a negotiation with any team is ludicrous. It's a completely unrelated situation.

Let's call a spade a spade here. The Bombers loaded up with the likes of Shiel, Saad, Stringer and Smith to pair with Merrett, Heppell, Hurley, McGrath, Hooker, McDonald-Tipungwuti, Daniher, Fantasia et al in order to chase a flag that never eventuated after they finished 7th in 2017. It wouldn't surprise me if they had been paying 105% for the past three years in order to attract all these players.

Compare that to Port, which has underspent for the past three years and can now pay 105% of their salary cap.

Essendon rolled the dice and crapped out. Time to suck it up, Bombers fans.

Id be very surprised if Essendon couldn't match it given the players they lost last year. They must be massively under spending.

It will come down to whether he wants to leave for environment or success, which all signs are he does. But a lot can change in 12 months on both fronts.

Pardon the intrusion. Essendon have money to burn this offseason, I’d be very surprised if there was any deal Port could offer that we couldn’t match. Nothing could be ruled out of course but unless we finished last and get pick 2 as compo I’d say we’d be matching any offer.

If we show no signs of improvement this year I can’t blame him looking elsewhere. Zac is the ultimate professional who craves success, if he doesn’t see that at Essendon I’d say he’s out the door. You boys are smack bang in the window so I can see why there would be mutual interest.
Indeed you do. I forgot you did in my earlier post but I posted this in the Average Salary thread a couple of weeks ago.

Salary cap space after 2021
HAVES (with room): Essendon, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Adelaide, Port Adelaide.

HAVE-NOTS: Richmond, West Coast, Collingwood, Melbourne, Fremantle, Geelong, Gold Coast, Greater Western Sydney.

SOME WRIGGLE ROOM: Carlton, Western Bulldogs, Brisbane Lions.
UNCLEAR: St Kilda, Sydney

Today's Age article says the following clubs are after him - Carlton, Melbourne and Port. Guess a bidding war will happen if he doesn't sign up.

I know we have been under spending but can't you only bank it for X amount of yrs before you lose it? I thought it was every 2 yrs?

Dodoro is definitely on the spectrum so I'd be expecting a match unless we still have Dunkley interested. Surely with the money we saved not getting him and losing Raz and Joe we could stump up. Wouldn't be surprised if both Hooker and Hurley finish up also. Doubt money is an issue, more about if dons can play some half decent footy. Last 2 weeks have been very good. Interesting to see how it plays out. Good luck

Looks like I have another reason to want Essendon to lose this year so potentially they don’t match our Merrett bid

Why can't Essendon front load it?

First of all, we don't have to match your front loaded terms to match and force a trade. We only have to match your years and dollars.

Second of all, do you think we can't match your front loaded terms the year after Saad, Daniher, Fantasia and McKenna leave? We set aside some money for Daniher, which would probably be 800-900K a year. Saad 650K. Fantasia at least 400-500K. McKenna also 400-500K.

Zaharakis and Hooker may retire at the end of the year, which is another 600K each. Bellchambers retired last year and he would have been on decent coin.
We're actually worried about how we can make the cap floor.

Money isn't the reason Merrett leaves because we can offer more than anyone else. It's the direction of the club that will see him leave. If we don't believe the compensation will be adequate, we can easily match anyone's offer.

Question....

If Merrett does request a free-agency move to Port (key word is if), and Essendon match (which they can and may well do),

what do you think is a suitable trade? Noting Port won’t have multiple high first round picks.

what player would you accept? As you previously said “you have to give up quality to receive quality.”

Im not sure if the Port management would be keen to give up a first 22 player at the moment though. And would suggest they would walk away from any trade if that was the case.

Yeah I don't know your list well enough but given we are in rebuild maybe a decent unplayed kid and a pick if we had to lose Merrett. Might also work if you have someone wanting to get home too.

I'm thinking the reason this rumour is finally being played out in the media, is because the essendon coterie want to look like they've had a win when they sign him, same with Brisbane and Charlie Dixon last year I'm sure we were the ones who leaked Dixon's offer after we already had his signature.
