List Mgmt. 2021 Trade Targets

I'm thinking the reason this rumour is finally being played out in the media, is because the essendon coterie want to look like they've had a win when they sign him, same with Brisbane and Charlie Dixon last year I'm sure we were the ones who leaked Dixon's offer after we already had his signature.
Mark Rooshito was the one who got the scoop on that, did the club leak the Brisbane offer to someone he knew?

Yeah I don't know your list well enough but given we are in rebuild maybe a decent unplayed kid and a pick if we had to lose Merrett. Might also work if you have someone wanting to get home too.

Essendon can match for +1 FRP, and then do a wink wink deal with Port for another +1 FRP (i.e. FRP for a fringe player that they don't want anymore).

It's happened with other clubs in previous trade periods.

You wouldn’t want our crappy first rounder + a player, just tank as much as possible and the AFL will take care of ya haha.

Edit: Although Joel Garner I reckon wont be here next season. If he can get himself in reasonable form, he’d be handy for another club.

Yeah that's probably under. I forgot you guys finished top 2 😁

You wont get some stupid trade for him. He will be a free agent based on a contract structured in a way that you cant fit him in your books or we wont sign him.

Sounds like a good plan, unfortunately a club only has to match the number of years and total amount of the contract.

Joel Garner would be worth a third rounder on a good day, but agree he'd be value for anyone needing a decent HBF.

Why can't Essendon front load it?

First of all, we don't have to match your front loaded terms to match and force a trade. We only have to match your years and dollars.

Second of all, do you think we can't match your front loaded terms the year after Saad, Daniher, Fantasia and McKenna leave? We set aside some money for Daniher, which would probably be 800-900K a year. Saad 650K. Fantasia at least 400-500K. McKenna also 400-500K.

Zaharakis and Hooker may retire at the end of the year, which is another 600K each. Bellchambers retired last year and he would have been on decent coin.
We're actually worried about how we can make the cap floor.

Money isn't the reason Merrett leaves because we can offer more than anyone else. It's the direction of the club that will see him leave. If we don't believe the compensation will be adequate, we can easily match anyone's offer.

Ports been underspending for years so has stockpiled ready to overspend on cap, and reportedly is in the top fewteams for cap space.

unless essendon have underspent for years, and are number 1 in cap space (which we know they aren’t) then they likely either couldn’t match or it would be very tight. I doubt they would be able to front load it quite as much as Port.

if he wants to stay at essendon you won’t need to match. Players often sign for their clubs for less.

front loading can be appealing to players because they get a lot more money a lot earlier. Most financial managers would highly recommend that. Especially in merretts case where it would make him one of the leagues richest players for the next couple of years

having said that, Merrett is an essendon player until we convince him otherwise. Getting a player to leave a club and a state is a fairly hard sell and we will have to beat out essendon and probably 1-2 other bidders who might be seriously considered. Ports got a very good track record at selling themselves to players though.

Mate, the front loading part means nothing, Essendon just have to match the overall contract.

Short of paying him well over a million dollars a season, Essendon will match any offer and potentially force a trade, then it’s up to Port to pay ridiculous overs for him in a trade, I can’t see how he’ll end up at Port.

Hi Adrian.

Is Merrett actually good at footballs or is he just the best at a sh*t big club so gets attention, similar to Gibbs/Murphy at Carlton?

Nah he can play.

Clearly why he wants out.

The other factor is that he'd complement our other mids such as Wines, Peps & Drew going into the future, after Trav & Robbie & Rocky retire.

Merrett be a great get, but all depends on Essendon and whether they match. They also have plenty of $$ to do so. Dodo is not as bad as many make out.

If we have to trade for him, i doubt we do it.

If Essendon show signs of improvement and their kids look okay, Merrett won't leave.

Hartlett, Motlop, Rockliff, Gray, frees up over $2 million. Of course some of this is factored into other deals from 2022, but that is a hell of a lot of money to free up.

I am not that 100% sure on this. Clubs and player managers are given some leeway in being creative in structuring the contract, making it harder to match:

Matching Offers
A contract offer is matched if the football payments and ASAs are equivalent under the offer and the contract proposed by the player’s current club.

To qualify as a matching offer, the player’s current club must make an offer on the same terms as the new offer tabled by the player including:

• Contract length;
• Base payments;
• Total match payments;
• Total ASA payments;

Total performance incentives based on AFL awards or honours, club best and fairest finish or games played (not including finals).

Thanks Tredders.

You ever get pissed off that people outside of Port Adelaide rate you at the same level of Scott Lucas? I mean for gods sake he wasn’t fit to strap your knee.

What if he came on a 1 year deal at huge money, then once he was through, he got extended on a new deal
RFA offers have to be a minimum of 2 years under AFL rules.

But I wouldnt discount a massive initial 2-year deal as a possibility, as long as Merrett was agreeable to a choice of money over security.
