He averaged 12 disposals on 67% TOG if you remove the two games he was sub.

Sparrow definitely looks like he has potential based on what he did this year but in no way do you throw big money at that kind of potential...
When I said big money I meant relative to what he would be on at Melbourne, not relative to Dusty.

We need a quality mid and short of getting an experienced gun (very unlikely now that we missed Merrett) we need to poach a youngster that hasn't yet broken out and probably pay them overs to get them here.

Given our need it would be worth it.

I keep seeing reports that both Patrick Lipinski and Nathan Kreuger are headed for Collingwood, but they're already gonna need to get way more points than they've currently got just to match a draft bid on Nick Daicos. They might be able to get one of the two in the PSD, but there may need to be another fire sale unless they can convert next year's first rounder into a whole stack of picks. Have they got anyone (realistic) that we could use?
Those players will cost pies next to nothing.

Dogs will push for some kind of late pick for lipinski but pies could just get him through the psd very easily if dogs won’t accept a late nothing pick offering.
I would be surprised if Krueger doesn’t just get to the pies through psd.
Averaged 9 disposals for 45% time on ground this season. I don't know a lot about Tom Sparrow, but I know you can't apply disposal stats to a 21yo who spends less than half of the game on the ground.

By comparison, butters , rozee and duursma averaged 17.6 disposals for 82% time on ground if you really want to make that comparison.

And why would you “throw big money” at that player?
I’m not saying I wouldn’t take him at the club, but the idea that he’s this player who’s worth “big money” and the answer to our problems is laughable.

Does Tom Sparrow really fill a need anymore than giving Rozee, Durrsma and Butters more midfield time? Plus another year of development for Willem Drew, and potentially someone like Houston being fully fit again?

If he wanted to come home and we could work out a trade at a good rate I'd be interested for sure. But I don't really see the need to chase someone like him at the moment.

Not too mention that sparrow is contracted so you’re paying a premium for a player who hasn’t really yet proven himself in a midfield.
Unless melb are looking to offload him I’m not sure you would bother doing much more than a quick check in to see where they are at.

We need midfield depth. Even if they all come on I'd still happily take more mids.

Two games? Take out the 6 games he was a sub (5 unused, 1, had 1% gametime for 0 possessions) and I get 12.4 disposals @ 63.2%

Point stands that saying he averaged 11 disposals and in the same breath comparing them to 3 guys of the same age who had anywhere between 15% and 18% more gametime is misleading.

As I said originally I don't know a lot about sparrow and I nowhere suggested whether we should throw anything at him. Just wanted to give that disposal stat some context esp compared to our three.

'Big money' seems to mean different things to different people on here. There are a lot of variables for Tom and Port to consider though.

  • Will SPP get his act together and play in the midfield next year?
  • Will Amon play more time as an inside mid successfully?
  • Will one or more of the big three develop as a potential line breaking mid?
  • Will Houston come on again as a potential midfielder when fully fit?

Surely at least one of those things will happen for us. Almost certainly Boak will demand a place in the midfield rotation for us despite his age. It might be worth looking at Sparrow next year when he is out of contract. I'm hopeful for some organic growth from our midfield candidates, and it is obvious we are not going to get a midfielder that substantially improves what we have already got.

Nothing interview but that is to be expected. Same ambiguous trash about improvement next year yada yada yada. Everyone is a first 22 player

I'd be trading out DBJ to get a first round mid.
I know there is a lot of bad feelings towards DBJ on here, but do successful clubs dump their Runner Up then Winner of BnF, All Australian and leadership group member after one down year.
Your long term strong clubs dont do it.
As I have said before DBJ is an enigma to the majority of Big Footy Posters.
No one thought he would get Top 2 BnF in 2019, a lot didnt even have him top 10.
2020 plenty expected him to be top 5 but his win shocked many.
He clearly does things the coaches and players respect him for, however we as supporters dont seem to appreciate.
Even this year I can remember him twice wearing the No 35 at Training.
His stats for the year put him in the top 10 Small Defenders for the year and he led the league in DHPA
Yes he did have a down year, and a stinker of a Prelim Final, but all this talk of disposing of him just seems a little premature.

I know I'll probably get shot down but does anyone know how Sam Durdin has gone this yr at the bays?

The only thing I’d be trading in for is future 1-3 round draft picks to build the layers of talent under Rozee, Butters, Durs, Mitch, Jones et al.

There is no top up player(s) that are going to push us over the top. The only way we win one in the next 2-3yrs is through tactical nouse which we obviously don’t have under the current regime

I didn't include the 5 unused games so I took out the 1% and the other game... Hence two games. If you stopped for a second to think my numbers were very close to yours sorry I added it up quickly in my head.

You are also comparing to 3 players who spent the greater part of the year injured played different roles and are already on our list...

I just don't think he has shown enough for us to go out of our way to try and pry him away from Melbourne...
