Nash is an average footballer that wouldn't get a game for any other AFL side. He’s a depth player at best, can't see him on anyones list in 2 year's time. He's done sweet FA in the 5 or so years in the system.

Long will likely be delisted at the end of the year. Can't see how he gets a game in the midfield when he's behind about 8 blokes and there's no spot for him anywhere else.

Both Nash and Long are in the bottom 10 for talent at the club. Both will struggle to get games in the senior side next year.

By comparison Worpel is a gun footballer and bnf winner of an AFL team. He's head and shoulders a better footballer and midfielder than both Nash and Long.
Such a poor take....

Callum Brown and Patrick Naish
Cal Porter and Liam Coghlan
Porter is an absolute jet and I can see him improving this season again and getting the call up. Naish unfortunately being a MID/WING/HBF, isn't really filling any gaps on our list despite being talented - I imagine he is going to have a blistering year in the VFL.

Cal Brown I see as my pick of the next in line for the BHH > HFC pipeline, this is largely due to his power and ability in the forward line. If his running capacity and disposal improves at Box Hill this year, I can see him jumping to the front of the queue. I also wouldn't be surprised if he is retooled into a pure High Half Forward/Half Forward Flanker in efforts to get (back) onto an AFL list.

Lewis showed a lot more than Jeka.

Jeka is getting one year deals very late in the piece, and he's been shifted to the other end of the ground to find a role. He's behind some pretty handy players.

I'd say Jeka is one of the more under pressure players on our list for a contract next season

I recall Jeka was moved to the backline last season as he was unable to capture his 2021 VFL form. Did well and got a call up to AFL.

fwiw, I wouldn't give up hope on Jeka making it as a forward. Has all the tools. It's a confidence thing for him.

He was getting delisted as a FWD.

The move to the backline and brief surge in form got him another 1 year deal. He'll need to progress again to stay on the list. We're all hoping he does.

Yep. But can't deny his 2021 form in the VFL.

Moore was getting delisted too.

Karl Amon about preseason and Hawthorn and his role

On the Zoom members forum last night Sam mentioned that most years when the 1-4 years players have training in early preseason they really go into their shell on the first day of the full preseason when the senior boys start, but that this hasn’t happened this year as the majority of the senior players had already gone back. He said he’d noticed that some of the youngsters who have found their voice over the last 12 months have been able to really find their feet on the back of this and the loss of some of the experience.

When asked as to what style of football we intend to play and how he sees the game moving forward, he said that we’re already preparing for what the next evolution of football will look like, and that we have been training this way for some time.

As a benchmark, Collingwood's pre Christmas 2km time trial was won by Nick Daicos at 6:32.

Just on our list at the moment, we have CJ, Maginness, Ward, MacDonald, Moore, Long and Weddle who have beaten that by a fair margin at their respective combines / at club 2km time trials. We also have Amon who was the time trial champ at Port (3 x 1km), in addition to Bramble and Nash who would be close to that mark if not ahead.

No doubt we will be one of the fittest clubs in it.

Running power with elite skills 🤔 sounds like we will be pushing for ultra fast ball movement, port game last year may be the closest to this

Might be also due to the fact the senior boys is a very very small group - frost, Sicily, Lewis, Breust, chad, Impey, Hardwick. Very different from years past when that group would have been 3-4x times larger and contained multi-premiership winners.

6:32 as your fastest is pretty slow.

Not sure if it was the full group, whether it was after a full session or if it was a true 2km - depending on oval size sometimes they can be around 2.2km.

That said the only truly elite runner on their list that I'm aware of is Sidebottom and he's getting on in years. They also had Jay Rantall who ran a 5:50 but he was delisted in 2021.

Add to add that Meek isn't slow for a ruckman either. Speed / running capacity definitely isn't going to be an issue. I reckon the Swans were clearly the fittest side last season and it contributed to them making the GF.

Brilliant to hear that we have a coach that has a new philosophy and approach to how the game should be played. Love the confidence and belief. Hope it rubs off on the players. With his achievements, experience and time in the game something is brewing and we cannot be in better hands. Sounds like to be a regular Hawks mid or rotating mid a big tank is a must to effectively execute the game plan he has in mind.

Also sounds like we could all be doing a fair bit of holding on late in games resisting to run to the dunny so that we don’t miss out on our best footy!

Even last year I think we were a reasonably fit side with quite few decent middle distance runners.

Of course all the running capacity in the world won't help if we get smashed in contested ball / centre square clearances again. We were awful at that this year.

But we are getting some decent size in the midfield now so hopefully that won't be the case. Also a fit and firing ruck combo of Meek and Reeves should even the score in the middle.
