This kid training with us apparently.

I think Davo-27 rated leary and may have even picked him in a phantom draft for us if my memory serves. Looks worth a punt based on the profile.

Today’s session started off wet then it cleared, and we got some sunshine for an hour before a blasting icy breeze, then showers came late in the session. Lovely December day. 🥶

No managed group at all today when I arrived, and nor for most of the session. Only late in the session did a couple of players break off to run laps, or head off upstairs when it started raining. Stephens and Bruest not doing much later in the session.

For the most part, the skills were still quite good despite the ball being slippery and the ground obviously being wet under foot.

During today’s session, there was a small amount of match sim where some real run and gun football from the back half was seen from CJ and Jars but unfortunately on two occasions Jars got smashed in tackles, once in the back line where his ankle got caught and then once he recovered from that he made a dash through the middle and delivered to the leading Ferg to applause from the bench - as he was dealt with late. Nothing serious, but he had a rough day.
CJ continues to excite with his ability to get in and out of trouble and the reach of would-be tacklers.
Ramsden and Lynch went at in the ruck battle in the middle, while Day was in amongst the mids also, attacking the contest and trying to break tackles as we know and love. MacDonald and Hurstwaite also into the middle for the centre bounces.

McCabe looks like a slightly shorter version of Ramma, but with a bit more of an Afro to carry on those shoulders of his. He has good skills and is quite mobile for a 196cm+ string bean. We had to double-take to work out who the new kid was.

During stoppage drills a little earlier in the session, Frenchy and Amon combined again quite well with Nash and Newk at the boundary throw ins. Meek's ability to contest the ruck and then get involved once the ball hits the ground is first rate. On multiple occasions he was acting as another midfielder.
Lynch won his share of hitouts today to, but what impresses me the most with Meek is that he's not a stand and deliver ruck, acting like a statue in the contest giving 1-2 handballs to the mids, he was moving outside the contest with them, breaking forward with Frenchy and Amon and they worked the ball toward the 50.
Ward and Worpel were in amongst most stoppages and contested situations, as were Nash, Frenchy and Newk. It's an intriguing watch, to see who will be our first selected midfield group, with so many wanting to take their chance.

While some of the other draftees watched on Hurstwaite, Frenchy and Weddle were all involved in the short amount of match sim between drills, and O'Sullivan also showed some zip and smarts. Frenchy's ability to drop a ball into a hole over a man, or hit a longer target with ease is already prevalent.

Jeka was playing deep defense and continuously found space to drop off and be used as the outlet off the back with his foot skills being a real highlight to deliver too players who'd broken out to the wing, or directly through the middle. His intensity was where it needs to be, which was also good to see.
Sicily just did as he pleased and read the ball in flight at will in a typical display of what we know Sic can do.

Ferg and Chad look to be in very good nick and we proving to be a bit of a handful up forward. At one point Chad lead out to a ball that landed in front of him, he picked it up and then put on some moves that had him dodge two tacklers before giving it off to Moorey. Kosi and Lewis were playing deep and put in some good leads, with Blanky and Frost opposed to them, it wasn't easy. DGB read the ball off the boot well on a couple of occasions and took the intercept.

This is the last week before the xmas break, so I'm tipping a big session on Thursday out on the track, hopefully with better conditions for the track watchers.
Great write up SYL.

I am getting excited about big Mr Meeks. A mobile ruckman, dare we dream of our own Dean Cox (I know settle down Simon 😅)

So many recent instances of club fortunes being turned around by the arrival of a new ruck from another club (Nank the tank at Richmond being the classic example).

We were so terrible in the ruck this year (mostly due to injury but we have been pretty ordinary for years now in that position) and I feel Meeks and a fit Reeves could be a huge influence on how we go in 2023.

Agree. On top of that, BB struggled to win CB hitout in his last 3 years. Clearly Lynch had his troubles staying on the park full stop.

I'm bullish on Meek. In fact I want him to take the first bounce v Draper in r1.

Reading the above and also noticing how Newcombe seems even bigger this year... looking forward to seeing Meek, Newcombe, Nash, and Stephens start in the centre bounce and hearing media say "Hawthorn need more big bodied mid..... oh.... wait...."
I reckon we go Husthwaite, Nash, Weddle at least one time

I can handle this if there is consistency. But there isn’t.

When we were dominating everyone else was crying how were they supposed to get better and more financially stable if they weren’t given the exposure on prime time. So we were removed off these prime slots to appease the bleeding hearts.

Can’t help but think the same isn’t going to happen in time
K
Seriously, do we have the worst media team in the league right now?

I have been waiting patiently for the video highlights of Weddle putting our endurance beasts to the sword, but still, crickets.

Last year we got the video of Wardy the very next day!

Wake the hell up and give us some training content! I am sick of reading about HARRY Vanilla MORRISON
Love hearing that Mackenzie's foot skills have been on show.
A massive issue in the last few years - midfielders delivery into the forward line. We have been really poor in this area but expect it too really approve with the addition of Amon, McKenzie, Stephens and more midfield time to Ward and C Mac

We often joke about this being time for The_Axeman to shine, but has anyone actually heard from him? He normally made it out to the track quite regularly with houdinihuddo - health check on these guys? Don't need a report or contributions (SYL has that covered), but more just concerned about a couple of good Hawks posters...

They are getting longer in the tooth, maybe the cold weather has perturbed them from leaving the house. 🤣

If you hover over their names, they were both browsing the forum in the last 24 hours.

The opening act is Strapping us in for the main event come the new year. Houdini hasn't gone missing and Axeman hasn't been cut. The show must go on, they will return.
