Thanks SPY. Did you see much involvment from Kade S?
Yeah he was there, and was involved in the ball drills too, streaming off of half back like old times.

First of all Arctic Park really lived up to its name today.

Quite a number of new faces out there, particularly with our assistants with one specifically being full of beans, and matching Sam for peskiness within drills, which I assume to be the new Box Hill coach.

Worpel is a shadow of himself across the chest and shoulders, and his really thinned down.
At the opposite end of the spectrum someone’s taken James Blanck’s head and put it on Hartigan’s body. Perhaps not in the overall frame, but can certainly see the definition, his arms and shoulders has shifted.

Finn did not much else, but run laps at a very good pace, and looks super fit.

Jars who just reminded us he is probably the nicest bloke on the list to always says G’day and asks how you are going, did his own thing for most of the early part of the session before taking part in the ball drills. Looked good.

Meek is a very big boy and found himself as the go to forward in a couple of the football drills and looks like that might be by design as he’s got very strong mitts. Earlier in the running drills, they split off the taller players, and the part time rucks into a group by itself, where no one was really surprised to see Denver again at the back of the group, but Lynch, and Meek were right at the front. Lynch actually took this out.

In the other group of this interval, running CJ Moorey Ward and McDonald were the front runners. It’s great to see Will Day out there in full training after last summer where he did not much at all.

Sam doesn’t miss an opportunity to get the ball in the hands or involving himself in the drills, and it seems that he’s met his match with our new Box hill coach who continually got stuck in to the drills and was encouraging all the players along the way.

There was quite a lot of new drills and groups moving around the ground for the first part of training today before the balls got touched. As could be expected about 70% of the kicks missed their targets within the first 10 minutes before all the players were brought back in and given a little bit of a talk possibly about skills but maybe about something else.

First session and it seems like we’re in complete renewal so it’ll be very interesting to see how the summer shapes up for a lot of players, but everyone looks fit so that’s a great start.

Arctic everywhere today.

Perhaps they are going to prioritise Worpels evasiveness and agility rather than grunt extraction?

If we are putting youngsters in that role, expect a lot of injury downtime in the short term.

Or perhaps a surprise mature ager in the draft?

Thanks SYL. You mention Denver was back of pack in running - did he at least look a bit bigger/bulked up?

Jeka out there?
Yeah, Denver looks a bit bigger and has a beard to go with it. Still on his haunches at the end of every running drill though. 😂

Jeka was out there, and like a lot of these young blokes that have hit the gym over the last month was getting about in a singlet to show off the guns.

Another player that’s put on a few kilos across the chest and arms is the big Noodle. He and Meek look like they’re going to be formidable, but I’m not discounting Lynch either who loos like he’s come back in great shape from the break along with the new haircut.

I'd love to see Big Maxxy have an injury free, break out season in 2023.

Thank you for the Hawks report 👍

Meeks hands looked huge as well, good to see :) On a serious note, how impressive does Finn look?? Or midfield is really starting to come together, great combination of size, speed and endurance, so far with more to come after the draft

Finn was doing rehab/running drills for a lot of the session, and then laps. All at good pace, he’s looking very fit.

Sam got all the boys to give him a boost as he ran through while they were all getting a drink on the fence and said “boys, have a look at the work Finn is putting in for you!”. Everyone cheered as he split the group on the boundary and kept running.
Sam then yelled out to Finn as he trailed off into the distance “I love it Finnigan!”.

Sam followed that up with the group “Look after yourself and then think about who else you can help”.
Seems that we are pushing a mantra of building each other up in the group and selflessness.

How was Duke looking? Wonder whether he will get the slim down treatment.

Like Dicky knee.

Thighs are massive. Not looking smaller, that’s for sure.

Glad to see we're starting with skills work this early. Honestly wouldn't mind seeing some variation in pre-season drills where they involve skills a bit more, never understood why clubs don't do time trials and running drills with ball in hand and bouncing requirements.

Curious what you mean about “starting with the skills work this early”. Pretty sure the balls are out week/day one every year now?

Yeah know the feeling. If you’ve got it flaunt it I say

(says fat ironic old bloke)

To a degree they are, but athletic testing is a priority for obvious reasons. It seems like we're starting with more skill work than usual which I like to see.

Thats Stephens isn't it? He looks taller than I thought.

Im so bullish on this guy.

A midfield combo of Newk and Stephens is a different kettle of fish than the JOM and Mitchell combo we have rolled out the last 6 years just on size alone (no disrespect to JOM and Mitchell).

Two powerful units and you throw in Finn and Nash and we have gone from one of the most undersized midfield units to one of the biggest basically overnight.

Of course size isn't everything but as the Cats showed this year it's definetly a plus to have a size advantage across the field.
