Wow. Lewis is said likely to miss our first round game and a lot hit panic stations. Even if he misses a few games the prognosis is not season ending.
Football is a contact sport and injuries are part and parcel of that. Sam has a medium to long term plan which he will pursue regardless of short term hiccups.
It is not the end of the world it is just a typical injury setback.

100%. Some posts seem like reactions you’d expect if we were playing a prelim next week and the entire cupboard was bare.

We have a whole squad of forwards, mids and backs who have all been training all summer to particular structures and systems. No need to rip it all up and start again for certain players, particularly when Lewis might only miss a couple of games.
There are certainly people reacting like that. My only point was that saying "I repeat Jeka will not play forward" is outright dismissive, something most of us gave Stratton24 crap about at length.

Crisis, if that’s what you wanna call it, creates opportunity.

Whether that be Sam looking to Greene, Meek, Ramsden, Serong or Jeka, the Lewis setback just opens the door for someone else to make a claim on their importance to our team and forward line going forward.

It’s kinda exciting in that regard.

I already thought mids and fwds would rotate a lot this season, perhaps I excluded Lewis from those rotations.

Now I think while he’s absent even more rotating. Try people out, create surprises for opposition.

After 2 games 2002 v nth (18th) and port (11th) hawthorn were top of the ladder. After 5 games carlton 9th saints 11th geelong 1st they were 8th with 106%

After that the we lost all the rucks and while we surprised some teams, the others worked us out.

We will be unpredictable again in 2023. The problem with both Lewis and Gunston out the fwds won’t be nowhere nearly as efficient, which was a feature in 2022

So heres the other reason what happens when lewis returns. Does Jeka go back again? The less disruption we have the better. I can see a few of u saying what if he is successful up forward. You then have to ask ureself how likely is that given Jeka's career to date
Exactly. Jeka was tried and failed as a forward but as a back he does much better.
My own opinion is that with Mitch missing for the first couple it'd be the perfect time to have Ramsden debut and give him a taste, especially at the 'G.

Remember, it's not about us winning as many games as possible this year, it's about us seeing who's best to take us forward. And we'll only do that by giving younger players a shot.

Ramden is not ready yet.. Sicily is AA CHB but doesn't mean he is a blinder put him FF as he is responsible captain of HFC kicking goals is far utmost importance that's my solution Go Hawks

My post wasn’t directed at you at all, but in any case, from everything I’ve seen and read particularly from 4P who spends so much time at training, it would just seem extremely unlikely at this point in time.

With Lewis missing the rucks will play an important role in filling the void until he returns. I don't know about Meek but Reeves and Lynch have shown they can clunk some marks going forward. Hopefully we can get 2-3 goals out of these guys. Also a good opportunity for Kosi to step up. A fit and in form Wingard will also help.

Out of all the ruckman, Lynch for mine is the most capable of playing forward. Has a few tricks as a big guy and will demand attention from the oppositions key backmen

Re Lewis and his injury, I’m pretty sus about it being called a “ sprained ACL” would not surprise me at all to see him miss 6-8 weeeks

Fair enough mate. I should have said Jeks is highly unlikely to be playing forward. But given whats happened thus far and where we r at i made that statement.

Every AFL team’s pass mark for the 2023 season

Hawthorn
The Hawks have undertaken an incredibly bold approach under Sam Mitchell, focusing heavily on youth with a view to stockpile as much young talent as possible. While 2022 wasn't a disaster, this club has lofty standards and will want to be back in September sooner rather than later.

Having traded away the likes of Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O'Meara and Jack Gunston, Hawthorn are thin on experience, yet that won't worry them. Mitchell is intent on installing a young group of players to lead the charge for their next tilt at a flag.

This season looms as a dangerous one if things go wrong, however if they can win a few games and avoid the wooden spoon, there is no doubt they can consider that a pass.

Pass Mark: 6-9 wins and no wooden spoon.

9 wins would be way more than a pass mark. If we had the youngest and most inexperienced list in the league and ended up with more wins this year it would be a massive exceeding of expectations.

Life throws many curve balls and let’s hope Lewis recovers well but having the likes of Mitch, Simpson etc leading the group will bring us a lot of experience, calm, composure, focus and solutions to deal with things. Our drafting and list management in a short time has come along way. It may not have an impact immediately but in good time having a quality midfield that will give us better delivery into the forward line will have a much bigger impact on performance than losing a player to injury.
Interesting take, the midfield definitely the focus this year, including hitting the scoreboard while improving the quality of delivery. Good thought.

I reckon I’m more likely to be FF than Sicily.

The opportunity for the rucks to learn their forward craft is theirs to grab now. This could be a real boon, a few weeks at FF with Kozi at CHF and a bunch of hawks scouting the pack will be great experience for the three, Reeves, Meek and Lynch.

It does open the door for Lynch to play as a permanent FF, if he's good enough.

I'm ambivalent to the whole thing of finding someone to replace Lewis at full forward. If Lewis isn't missing many games then there's no real need, just work on other avenues to goal. Have the resting ruck sit up there, contest, and let the smalls and midfielders feed off the spillage.

That said, if you're the final option I'd be interested out of sheer morbid curiosity. I imagine it'd end up something like the Legends' game.

Might love a goal but he's actually only ever kicked one in the seniors. Would definitely be worth a try though, nothing to really lose by trying him there.
Think his game and his marking style suits it, gives him a license to be an outlet on kicks to and play up the ground.

I would be confident that he would win/find 3-5 chances for a goal a game for us. Plus imagine having to defend him, great evasion, marking is excellent and his kicking on the run dramatically improved.

The forward line suits his natural game more, just depends if he can pick up the flow of the play and not get in other forwards way.

Say that's the way Sam decides to go (playing Lynch as a permanent FF) I guess this would then make it a battle between Meek and Reeves for the other ruck spot. IMO that will be unfortunate for whomever misses out because I truly believe that Meek and Reeves are our best two rucks.
