Anyone up watching the WC Final?

I felt King Huskii shudder from Albany at the awarding of that penalty just now.

I say this as a lifelong obsessive of the round ball game…I’ve never been so out of love with the sport at its elite level.

Purely as a game, it’s still an absolute joy to play and watch - the fundamentals and intricacies of it are so pure and perfectly calibrated.

But as a cultural phenomenon it has become too big for it’s own good, a tool of greed for those who control it and of unbridled power for those who seek to yield it.

The pen was not a pen. Softer than butter that has been left on the bench for 3 days. The goal the Argies just scored was sublime, though.

France have been terrible to be honest. Poor final viewing so far

Dembele brushed him with his arm as he entered the box and their legs ever so slightly touched, and Di Maria went down like a sack of Weagles midfielders.

France have looked completely off from the first minute.

If this was AFL, Cameron Ling would be telling us at half time that he wants to see someone from France go out and start a fight to either spark something or ruffle the opposition.

Footy seems almost provincial and quaint compared to this. And I’m glad for it.

Argentina have always looked like they have a collapse in them this tournament.

Should be an interesting dénouement.

Here’s hoping it’s decided via a goal (or two) and not penalties.

Some quality Hail Mary subs from Deschamps have at least made a decent final of it. Argentina unlucky but at least we have a game

All done.

I think now’s a good time to share this fine bit of writing from before the tournament:

"Then of course there is the prospect of Messi actually winning this thing. Picture him, for a moment, on that podium. Or indeed picture the star player of any of the favourites. Picture Neymar of Brazil or Kylian Mbappé of France taking the trophy. Any strange vibes? Are the pieces fusing together, patterns emerging on the board, Usual Suspects-style?

This is the beauty of Qatar’s planning and execution, the insane levels of financial commitment. Qatar has not just one inside man, but three. One way or another there is a decent chance that golden trophy will be lifted by an employee of the host state. And do we think there will be dissent on that podium, that these court performers are going to do anything other than emit mannered and grateful joy?
"

Upwards of 6,500 migrant workers are estimated to have died building the stadiums and infrastructure to make that event happen. That’s 38 for every goal scored.

I didn't watch it mate. I think you summed up the round ball game though.

That final was epic. Will go down as one of the great sporting events ever staged. They will be taking about it 100 years from now.
The second period of extra time was just mindlblowing. That save from Martinez in the 123rd and final minute from Kolo Muani. Just wow

From about the 70th minute onwards was epic. Before France got the penalty, it was basically just Argentina comfortably going through the motions.

Messi getting all the plaudits and rightfully so ,awesome to see him finally win a WC to cement his status as an all time great but yeah that save by Martinez was next level,9/10 old mate from France scores from there.

Dembele brushed him with his arm as he entered the box and their legs ever so slightly touched, and Di Maria went down like a sack of Weagles midfielders.

Totally agree it was soft but I thought Frances penalty was nearly as bad
So kinda evened out.

In the end absolute epic match and think Argentina were definitely the overall deserving winners.

It was a similar save to what he made against us in the dying stages to prevent extra time.

France's penalty was way more of a penalty than the Argie's one.
