AUST V COLL - FRANKSTON

Been a good game so far. Jhye Clark, Will Ashcroft and George Wardlaw all looking good. Wardlaw just shows composure and spatial awareness like no other. D'Aloia pretty good as well. Munkara is taking them on and showing his athleticism.
Szybkowski good in tight, Oliver Hollands hitting passes no others can, one was a beautiful in board kick on the 45 degree hitting a team mate in traffic and sending the team forward. Cadman and Scully going ok, Davey Jnr flashing in and out, Fletcher working the wings nicely, Hagan trying hard.
Sheezel and Hewett struggling to get involved enough but both using voice well and Hewett instructing others on where to set up, Teal, Michalanney and Cowan talking loud and working well, Gillbee made a few mistakes, Lemmey is ok but has run under a few balls, Broadbent battling hard.
Cal Twomey has been very impressed with Wardlaw

Really enjoyable game. The kids threw themselves into it and made a great contest.

Some outstanding young prospects out there; Wardlaw, Ashcroft, Hagan, Clarke, Fletcher, Munkara. Tsatis, D'Aloia, Busslinger, Scully, Broadbent etc

Strong group - will be a great draft.

Player Reviews All Aus Team

Jed Hagan - Have been a fan since I seen him late last year. He is just a tenacious competitor. Had some really good one on one wins, and drove the footy forward with some good link up play. Coughed up one goal with a poor kick, but played his role well. His tackling is elite.

Will Ashcroft - Workhorse. Gets to every contest and looks to impose himself. Tackling pressure was excellent, link up play was good but at times his kicking was a little scratchy. Has 250 game player written all over him. Probably just lacks that little bit of zip that might get exposed at AFL level.

Jhye Clark - classy workhorse. Such a natural footballer who knows when and where to run. Showed some really good vision by hand and foot which lead to a couple of nice inside 50’s for the academy. Inside work was really good. Biggest thing that stood out was how one touch he was. Very rarely fumbles.

George Wardlaw - firmed as the number one player in this years draft for me. Contested work was fantastic, but it was his explosiveness that impressed me most. On a number
Of occasions he burst from the stoppage and linked up with team mates. Got pinned for HTB trying to break through tackles in the first half but adjusted well in the 2nd half. His kicking is fantastic and he has quick fire hands in close.

Oliver Hollands - hadn’t seen much of Hollands prior to this game. Showed some real glimpses. Is deceptively fast, and sums up situations really quickly. Hit some really nice longer kicks that opened up the play for his team. His long kicking really stood out for mine. Classy.

Harry Sheezel - Didn’t really get his hands on it. Hardly any impact. Couple of nice tackles which highlighted his accountability.

Jaspa Fletcher - played mainly on the wing and showed some dash. Took the game on and had a few nice long kicks inside 50. Has the potential to be a real game breaker.

Elijah Hewett - Little bit disappointing. Didn’t get much genuine inside time, often finding himself across half forward which isn’t his natural position. Looks like the type of player that needs to be the main ball winner in the midfield. Get more of an idea on him at the champs.

Alwyn Davey Jnr - Not much to comment on. Didn’t get much of the footy and didn’t have much of an influence.

Mitch Szybkowski - Bit of a bull on the inside. Always gets his hands free when under pressure and opened up the stoppages with his hands in close. Little bit on the slower side so I doubt he would appeal to North. Turned it over a few times by foot.

Anthony Munkara - Wow-wee. Classy. Can absolutely see why Souup rates him so highly. Took a couple of really nice marks and showed his talent around the contest where he was just about untackle-able. An excitement machine who just makes things happen. Same sort evasiveness and vision as Shai Bolton. Probably the most exciting player in this years draft class. Kicked a really nice goal and played a hand in a number of other scoring thrusts.

Elijah Tsatas - showed some nice run and carry, but didn’t have a whole heap of highlights. Looked rushed whenever there was a bit of pressure on him. Lacked a bit of composure around the contest. Hesitated around the contests a few too many times for my liking. At times he probably could have linked up better. Not sure if it was laziness or he was carrying a niggle. Considering how good his NAB league form had been I was a bit disappointed in some of his effort.

Adam D’Aloia - Loved his game. Showed some power and explosiveness and looked to move the footy at every chance. Broke a number of tackles with brute strength. Got on the end of one and kicked a beautiful 50m goal. See so much upside in his game.

Lachie Cowan - Didn’t get a heap of the footy but showed his long kicking at stages. Had a couple of goals kicked on him but looked as though he was playing off his man a bit. Probably a bit of a different game for him as when he plays for Tassie his teammates look for him at every chance.

Luke Teal - Probably the best defender on the ground. Good overhead, courageous and kept tight to his opponents. Really neat skills and positioned himself really well across the back half to mop up.

Jason Gilbee - torched the footy in the first half and looked rushed at times. Got caught out on Raines and had a couple of goals kicked on him early. Improved in the 2nd half where he showed a bit more run and carry and better defensive craft.

Max Michalanney - Didn’t get a heap of the pill but looked composed and assured when he did have it. Got a number of spoils in and won at least half a dozen one on ones. Looks as though he had really good closing speed.

Matt Jefferson - Didn’t get a heap of it but found a lot of space. Is super quick on the lead and has a nice leap, Kicked a nice goal and missed another. Looks a very natural forward.

Jedd Busslinger - Little bit disappointing. Didn’t do much wrong but just didn’t get a heap of the footy. Ended up with ten-ish disposals and 5 marks (not official stats). 2 of the marks were genuine intercepts. Kicking was very very neat. Looking forward to watching him more at the championships.

Harry Lemmey - disappointing. Not much influence. Didn’t get to show his aerial prowess. Had a couple of nice moments where he showed his athleticism below his knees with some good pick ups, but that was about it. Would want to show more at the champs or he might end up sliding down the draft order a bit.

Aaron Cadman - Battled and tried his heart out. Ended up with 1 goal 3 behinds (maybe 2). Really should’ve kicked 3. Is generally a good set shot goal kicker. Work rate is excellent often pushing up to the wings to provide an option.

Henry Hustwaite - Super impressive. Took a few contested marks and linked up across half back. Won a heap of 50-50 contests and looked composed with ball in hand. One to watch IMO.

Tom Scully - Looked the good in the first half, tapered off in the 2nd. Believe he ended up with 3 behinds. Took a few marks inside 50 but dropped a couple that he should have swallowed. He will probably clunk those in a few years time once he fills out. Had a beauty of an inside 50 that hit up Cadman in the first quarter. Despite his height he has no worries attacking the ground ball which was impressive. Also spent a bit of time in the ruck. Doesn’t look all that natural but showed some good spring in a few of the Centre bounces.

Jackson Broadbent - he was good without being outstanding, a number clean hitouts where he showed deft touch. His ruck craft reminded me of Goldy. Tried to get out to the wings to provide an outlet but dropped a few marks. Follow up work was neat. He looks like he wants the footy in his hands.

My player reviews for anyone interested.

Obviously a much better showing by the Academy side than last year, to be honest I felt the Academy side was better than the Pies for most of the game, in the end it seemed more a battle of endurance which a side with AFL listed players is going to win everytime. Most players come out of this in a clearer position in terms of rankings imo, Jhye Clark and Oliver Hollands especially looked as good as they did in the U17's matches last year, Hollands has suffered somewhat from being forced inside at Murray, but next level is definitely more of an outside midfielder/ winger and a good one at that.

A few question marks on the taller prospects though, I felt Busslinger and Jefferson were the only ones that had 'good' games all round, Cadman was impressive early but faded out, Scully has more question marks for me now and Lemmey worked into it a bit but was stagnant for a lot of the game. I've never seen Broadbent so thoroughly beaten in the ruck as well, was mistiming his run and leap at it all day but made up for it with his work at ground level, however it is just one game so grain of salt

IN THE END
I was at the game, behind the benches
.

Jhye Clark - Consistent all game, clean disposals, in and under packs and bursting away from them using his voice well too. Always got stuck into the pack at a contest.
Will Ashcroft -
industrious, good decisions with ball in hand releasing team mates, clean, hard at it, smart movements and positioning and clearly one of the top draft chances. Brisbane??? are getting a bloody good one.
George Wardlaw - just sublime, creative, effective disposals, efficient user hitting the right targets, aware of surroundings and clearly best on. At one point a pack was gathering to fight for the ball, he got to it first, saw a tackle about to be applied on him from the left and calmly dropped to one knee and spun under and out of the tackle, stepped back away from another tackle coming from his right and fired off the ball releasing a team mate to deliver the ball forward. So calm and clean all day.
Adam D'Aloia - Smart footy player, seemed a bit quicker in person than i had previously seen. Uses it well, beautiful running goal, won some hard balls and clearances too, smooth mover and exited trouble at time very well with side steps or drawing a player to him then releasing the ball by hand to a team mate.
Anthony Munkara - Quick, elite agility and athleticism and was looking dangerous all day. I said at the end of last year that Anthony was going to be my favorite to watch this year for those exact reasons and he showed why during this game not because he is going to go high in the draft but because of what he offers to us spectators and his potential for the team. The only thing with Anthony is, when he gets the ball his first instinct is to beat everyone else on the ground somehow and try to kick the goal, most of the time there are better options running past or spreading wide for him to get the ball to that he ignores, however, at least he was having a crack at trying to improve himself, getting him to use the better options or look for team mates going past can be trained into him very easy i think. He will have some highlight reels at the end of his career that is for sure.
Jaspa Fletcher - looks to be a true wing and has nailed the role specifics already. Holds his ground, doesnt get sucked into the ball, if it so happens that a hard ball get is there he will fight for it. Kept his width so he was there for the switch if needed, uses team mates in the link up chain of play to bring the ball forward for his team, runs hard and fast with the ball and has excellent running patterns, always looks for the right option when delivering and if not he will kick the goal.
Oliver Hollands - like i said earlier, what was evident during the game was Olivers sublime use of the ball. Seeing and hitting targets others cannot. He hit targets today that sent his team forward on many occasions and bit off kicks (and nailed them) that others would not have attempted. He was very zippy and had a good game.
Elijah Tsatas - When i was watching this, at the time i hadn't taken note of the fact he was named in the leadership group. It showed during the game. He was talking all game. Instructing team mates, positioning them, whenever he gave the ball off he was telling them where to look or where to give it. He was quick, showed great hands and not afraid of the bigger bodies. In my mind, it (his leadership role) affected his output a bit as i think if he was just told to 'go get it mate' he would have had a better production day. However that is not what is was about for him today, it was a very good learning experience for him and one he will be better off in the long run for having done it.
Elijah Hewett - Has such a maturity on the field it was like he was much older than the others. I was there with a friend who knew nothing about any of them and really has no under 18 footy knowledge, and his first question to me was about 7 minutes into the first quarter, "how old is that guy wearing number 12?", does the Australian team have older guys out there to sort of help out with playing coaching or something. I called him a moron, and explained the premise of the game and the age of them all. However, what he saw was the same as me, Elijahs in game maturity, most likely from playing seniors, shows through in his game, he has a high footy IQ and was instructing team mates all day. He positioned himself well and helped position others all day during kick outs or stoppages around the ground. He cracked in hard and used his voice all day, when he got it he would use the best option and help the ball go forward for Aust and was definitely not afraid of any size body coming at him from the Collingwood boys.

will add the others when i get a chance later

It was a very weak pies vfl team also. Pies took 5 extra players to Perth and some of their regular vfl players went back and played at their home clubs. For example Weirering at full forward was playing second division SFNL last year which is a very weak comp.
In saying that still much more seasoned bodies for the vfl and it definitely plays a big part. Especially when the academy is a team quickly thrown together while pies vfl players know each other’s game much better.
All in all a fair performance from the academy boys.

Probably shouldn’t of said very weak but weakened pies team.

I felt the difference was the bigger bodies. But basically had Macrae, Draper (who wouldn't normally would have played in that game, if it wasnt for they needed players down back) Bianco, McMahon, Murley and Harrison (did he only play a half? I didn't notice him after HT) Cal prob was the most experienced.
But the academy kids were good, had a real crack; and given they just had met so didn't gel as much as some, they did pretty well given the circumstances.

Tough inside midfielder George Wardlaw has helped solidify his spot as a top-three prospect for this year’s AFL draft after shining in a key match attended by scouts from every club.
Wardlaw received the medal as the NAB AFL Academy side’s best on ground in its exhibition match against Collingwood’s VFL side on Saturday, racking up 18 disposals, an equal game-high five hardball gets and eight tackles.

A 181cm midfielder from the Oakleigh Chargers, Wardlaw is a contested ball-winning beast who models his game on Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver and puts a high emphasis on pressure and tackling.

Wardlaw, who turns 18 in July, possesses great breakaway speed and power and also put on show his marking ability with a strong contested grab in a large pack of players during the final quarter.

“Certainly in the second half, particularly the third quarter, he lifted around the ball and did some did some really, really good stuff,” AFL Academy coach Tarkyn Lockyer said of Wardlaw.

Fellow top-three draft prospects Will Ashcroft (24 disposals, four clearances, one goal) and Elijah Tsatas (17 disposals, one goal) also led the way on the big stage in a 10.6 (67) to 6.9 (45) loss for their side.

A Brisbane Lions father-son prospect, Ashcroft racked up the ball at will through the middle and showed off his quick and clean hands, sound kicking skills and strong running ability.

He logged 15 of his disposals in the second half.

“He had some really good run and carry through the middle of the ground – which was terrific – among other highlights throughout the day,” Lockyer said.

Other players to catch the eye in the clash included hard-at-it Geelong Falcons onballer Jhye Clark (19 disposals, six tackles), West Australian key defender Jedd Busslinger (12 disposals, four marks) and Essendon Next Generation Academy member Anthony Munkara.

A 186cm forward, Munkara hails from the Tiwi Islands and is a player with silky skills, good speed, serious agility and a good pair of hands above his head.

He did not have a huge influence on the game overall, but kicked a goal in the last quarter and showed enough glimpses throughout the match to excite recruiters.

“There’s a little bit to work with there,” Lockyer said.

“For Anthony to come here and get the opportunity, the learning that he’ll take away is going to be incredible for him.”

The match also featured Collingwood AFL-listed players including Callum Brown, Trent Bianco and Finlay Macrae.

Brown was Collingwood’s best player on the day with 31 disposals.

The Magpies also played Murray Bushrangers ruckman-forward Toby Murray, who is a mid-season draft prospect.

The brother of former Collingwood player Sam Murray, the 200cm big man began the year as a key forward but has flourished as a ruckman over the past month.

He played only limited game time, but showed some good signs in the ruck with six disposals, 14 hitouts and a goal.

Murray played in both of the Colgate Young Guns games after receiving nominations from eight AFL clubs.

The match was played across four 25-minute quarters, with no time-on.

Yes you are correct. A good number of the players were extended Collingwood VFL list. Basically anyone with a number above 40 was VFL. Not sure though that they spend much time together as quite a few had never played a VFL game prior.
I think there were about half a dozen Collingwood AFL listed players. Callum Brown, Bianco, and about 4 or 5 kids from the 2020 and 2021 draft.

One thing I would say, being at the game, it's a shame some of these guys/kids from suburban leagues don't get enough attention.
There were a number of young players who played their 1st game of VFL who actually looked good.

Makes you wonder, particularly given how Newcombe has come on, whether recruiters will spend more time out in the burbs.

I thought Wild was good down back in the 2nd half. Wetering, Raines. Schrieber had a fairly good game too. I thought 18 year old Toby Murray as a forward ruck looked good for his size, even though not on our vfl list. Very mobile.

Stating the obvious I guess but this was my take on the game:

Mids; Wardlaw, Ashcroft and Clarke were the standouts in this game. Personally I liked Wardlaws game.

Defenders: Of the taller defenders Busslinger reconfirmed he is the real deal I think. Teal showed a bit.
Small defenders were led by Hagan but there is still some doubt about how he would transfer to AFL. I like the kid, can't help it as I'm drawn to those some "experts" say can't make it yet somehow keep performing above all those preferred others. He's playing against men now, in an unfamiliar role and still beating them. I guess it's my weakness lol.

Forwards: Not an awful lot to go on for forwards from this game, tall or small really but Sculley shows potential as a tall. Would like to have seen him hang onto a couple more marks but that can happen with talls more used to just sticking hands up against under-agers and not getting real body contact. You could deep dive into the various forwards/mids but none stood out for me in this particular game.

Others: Munkara showed all the skill and ability to be a bit special but as is often the case with these high skilled types, I feel he may be the type to fade in and out of the game. How many possessions will be enough for him to earn a permanent role in an AFL side?
I still really like Gillbee. He is the one guy from this game you could still say, "actually he could be developed to play anywhere".

On first watch I though Busslinger was quiet, but watching the replay I was impressed with his closing speed and ability to impact a contest. He would have easily led the game in spoils I imagine, without having access to the full stats.
