And I get that, you can’t applaud someone for things they could have done but didn’t - that’s unarguable - but it does paint a picture of the type of forward he is. A black and white appraisal of him or anyone else like yours that is based wholely and solely on one metric doesn’t allow for that.

A midfield equivalent would be Marcus Bontempelli. In years to come people might look at his numbers particularly when it comes to possessions and will just go ‘oh ok he was reasonable.’ Anyone who’s watched a lot of Dogs games in the last 7 years will know he’s much much more than that

His stats and influence are taken into account in awards. You guys were talking about score assists for weeks right? That’s why he got picked.

That’s the thing though there is no rule.

Every sport has these official and unofficial concepts.
When Rugby League Week announced its immortals in the 1980s, it was Clive Churchill, Reg Gasnier, Bob Fulton and Johnny Raper from memory.

At the time they were untouchable in the ‘lore’ of rugby league history but pretty soon - within 14-15 years - it was realised that there were and are other players who deserve to be in that company because there were many who saw both the original 4 and the guys who came later like Wally Lewis, Mal Meninga, Graeme Langlands, Andrew Johns and Arthur Beetson. Norm Provan as well. Telling one they can’t be in it because it’s too exclusive wouldn’t be right because in their own ways all of those guys are roughly equal

I think you overestimate the gap in quality. I think the top 9-10 players in history whoever they may be as there is no scientific way to establish it, are probably in a realm of their own but behind them it’s a logjam

Well I think so. I mean the AFL does it with picking Legends. I think the ratio is for every 6 new HOFers 1 Legend is picked or something. It’s specifically done not to make too many legends to keep its exclusivity and prestige.

Yes and there are only awards given for a certain number of statistical measuring criteria.

Modra is the perfect example. Injury itself may have robbed him of more awards it’s hard to say.

Fact is he won the same amount of coleman medals as Scott Cummings

No one in their right mind would rate the two equal. Modra had skills and abilities that Cummings, a good solid player, simply did not

You look at the whole CV when you compare. Since the Colman’s are the same you separate them with something else. Without looking I’m sure Modra smashes him in everything else right?

Statistically he’s ahead anyway, yes, but their gameplay was not comparable either, Modra was on another planet.

For the record this isn’t a discussion I’m having about Hawkins or any other Geelong player it’s simply about how we perceive what we watch and then assess it.

I am a slave for numbers and love them because they are evidential, they are reference points, and they measure output, and awards have their place too, but I don’t love numbers and awards nearly as much as I love watching them be put together. Same goes for the other sports I love.

Yeah look great player, but I don’t really take into account other leagues when doing my ranking. The awards aren’t equivalent imo.

Polly farmer doesn’t qualify then either he was named as starting ruckman for the team of the century as well though.

We are having a historical conversation so it must include this, to think otherwise would be idiotic.

Look I’m going to be brutally honest man. Try not to get upset but I really don’t care about the WAFL. The people I hang around with don’t even know what is and I think this might be the case with the rest of my gen in vic. Let alone players who played in the 50s and 60s that you can’t get footage of. If you can it’s incredibility difficult to find and the quality is really really poor. I’m not sure how you expect me to rate these guys especially since their awards are from a different league. I’d literally just be going off hearsay. Did you see Polly play live?

Scott Pendlebury is very under-rated

Here is some wa news I haven’t seen it live though.

Who cares.

But nice dodge of the question, did you see Polly play live or not? Pretty safe to assume no. So I don’t think you know how good he actually is either.

Overrated by pies fans but underrated by everybody else. I personally think he’s just a microscopic bit better than Selwood.

I didn’t but I’m still confident a lot of historical events happened even though I wasn’t present.

Good year but way behind a few defenders important role for the Pies though.
Not saying AA but more about that other poster’s top 70 players. He doesn’t get a mention but Pendles has a place in that. Particularly considering some of the players that made the list.
1x Norm Smith
3x Anzac Medal
6th highest Brownlow Votes (5th after 2022)
5x Copeland Trophies
Top 3 Copeland in 13 of 16 years
1x AFLCA Player if the Year
2x AFLPA Captain of the Year
6x All Australian
0ver 350 games
AFL Coaches best 1st year player

Huh? That’s impossible.

It's really not impossible actually.

You'd be surprised how many names your criteria adds to the list, rather than removes.

For example, the MVP has only existed for less than a third of the time the competition has been running but if winning an MVP gets you in, then aside from those already named in his 100, you would have to add:

Terry Daniher
Russell Greene
Darren Millane
Luke Darcy
Corey McKernan
Dane Swan
Tom Mitchell
Patrick Cripps
Clayton Oliver
Marcus Bontempelli
Andrew Brayshaw

That's 11 extra names (out of only 30 something winners) that have to be added (you also can't remove names for not winning one if the award didn't yet exist).

I'm not doing the same with Brownlows and Norm Smiths because that would ligitamately add another 60+ names. Just choosing one of those awards (Norm Smith) since the year 2000, you would add to his list:

Luke Shuey
Jason Johannisen
Cyril Rioli
Brian Lake
Ryan O'Keefe
Jimmy Bartel
Scott Pendlebury
Paul Chapman
Andre Embley
Byron Pickett
Shaun Hart

That's another 11 names just from the last 20 odd years.

The bar for top 30/50/100 is higher than you think (and some of the above names clearly should not be on it)

Outstanding player especially in big games, he's a bloke you'd hate to face when the pressure is on rarely makes wrong decisions and he doesn't need the ball 30 times to hurt you.

Accidental oversight. Sensational player. Dane Swan was another omitted by oversight
