I remember the chatter at the function - they wanted a few guys who all went in the 11-20 range. Felt like Ely was the fallback. There's barely half a dozen guys taken after him in the second or third round that are worth talking about IMO.
IIRC we were big on Duurrsma, which is a shame as he looks a gun (though lots of injury issues)

in hindsight, still a very mixed bunch between Ely and Tom

21. Ely Smith (Murray Bushrangers) – Brisbane Lions

22. Xavier O’Halloran (Western Jets) – GWS

23. Jez McLennan (Central District) – Gold Coast

SECOND ROUND

24. Ian Hill (Perth) – GWS

25. James Rowbottom (Oakleigh Chargers) – Sydney

26. Rhylee West (Calder Cannons) – Western Bulldogs (father-son)

27. Tom Sparrow (South Adelaide) – Melbourne

28. Xavier O’Neill (Oakleigh Chargers) – West Coast

29. Will Kelly (Oakleigh Chargers) – Collingwood (father-son)

30. William Hamill (Dandenong Stingrays) – Adelaide

31. Luke Foley (Subiaco) – West Coast

32. Luke Valente (Norwood) – Fremantle

33. James Jordon (Oakleigh Chargers) – Melbourne

34. Kieren Briggs (Pennant Hills) – GWS (academy)

35. Bailey Williams (Dandenong Stingrays) – West Coast

36. Thomas Berry (GWV Rebels) – Brisbane Lions
Would take Rowbottom any day of the week.

Jordan and Sparrow as premiership role players would also be a good pick-up

Agree was playing back for the parts of the game I caught and did reasonably well. For a team well beaten the backline was probably the only area that was competing reasonably well. Lester was the standout, Payne competed reasonably and Wilmot showed potential.

This was a very disappointing game. Our midfield were terrible and none could in any way be considered to have put their hands up for senior selection. We looked slow and unskilled in the middle of the ground, played from behind mostly and then let the players run away from them when the got the ball. They applied no pressure and the ball was coming in quick and easily into our backline. Think of what our firsts team played like in the first quarter against Essendon and then apply that for a whole game and you will have an understanding.

With the lack of pressure upfield I thought our backline did a very nice job. Lester was excellent and Payne was very good as well. I don't recall either getting beaten and both used the ball very nicely. Personally I still would like Payne playing in the firsts to free up Andrews to play a more intercept focused game.

Wilmot was pretty good without being exceptional. He is quick and reads the play nicely but he was a bit rushed. His disposals were a little hit and miss but he did make some nice kicks and I thought his decision making was good. I just think a week or two to settle into the level and having a few mids who can be bothered to run to get free would help. Madden was similar with good defence and a couple of errors by foot but largely pretty good. The selling feature of Michael is supposed to be his skills and I thought he was very average on this front.

I didn't mind Lane in the ruck and I thought Smith was much better in the ruck than I have seen him previously. These two have actual chances to be AFL ruckman and I would really like to see them getting all the ruckwork at VFL level. Giving the part-timers ruck work takes away opportunity from the guys who actually need it.

Lohman was horrendous by foot until about half way through the third. He literally missed target after target often by a very large margin. About half way through the third though he started to hit a few and he seemed to get a lot more confident after that. He showed nice pace and reading of the play in the last playing as a HFF and was pretty decent in that period. Before that though he was BAD.

Tunstill I expected more of given that he has been the best of the rookies to date. He was not bad but he did not stand out though and was part of the well beaten midfield group.

Cox came in as a mature ager and was okay playing on a wing but he did not stand out at this level nor did he look like he was playing a position of need. I am not seeing the point of picking him up based on this game.

I fear that Tom Berry will go the way of Ben Keays.

Won’t get the opportunity here at his natural position, and I hope he gets a similar opportunity that Keays did, at another team.

It’s a hard sport to crack for many players, if you’re not at the right team, in the right situation, at the right time.

I don’t know what the coaches are trying to do with our young midfielders at reserve level.

From my perspective, Robertson is our current best young midfielder, but from reports on the weekend, didn’t get much of a run through the midfield.

I can understand players needing to broaden their skill set, but it’s hard to do so at reserve level if you’re not in a position to see much of the ball.

He got more time in the middle as the game went on and ended up working into the game quite well which just makes it more frustrating he spent the first quarter and a bit unsighted in the forward line.

I see a Ben Keays situation all over again with Dev Robertson. Will be staggered if West Coast don't come calling and he walks straight in to their best 22 as a full time mid.

Personally I am wondering if it is a management thing with Dev after having the back and Hamstring issues. They may up his minutes in the midfield as the year progresses and as he gets more confident after those set backs.

I agree needs a run of game as a mid fielder at AFL level to show his actual ceiling. He won’t get it with us unless we have a horrendous run of injuries.

I can’t see any alternative for him but to seek a trade. ☹️

Absolutely this. He was getting midfield time when in the firsts while spending some time up forward. Keays was a forward when in the firsts. Robertson will be fine, but ultimately he'll have to earn his spot in the 22.

all got to do with timing in the club you drafted too. We have a long line of young mids not getting game time.
Keays still would not get a game over Neale/Lyons here even after playing well for the crows.

I do not mind if we stick with Zorko HB for a while. Gives someone else a go in the mid like Clugga or Berry.
Which might give more time to Sharp, Prior or Dev on the wing.
At least the Zorko thing is thinking about our mids. You do worry Lyons, Zorko, M Robbo and Rich getting to the end in the next few years.
We still be hopefully in a window.. Need replacements.

I’m not that concerned about replacements for our older players.

Sharp has obviously been identified as a wing to replace MRobbo. And Jaspa Fletcher has been playing wing at QAFL and Academy level.

We’ve got Bailey, Rayner and Cockatoo who all play a hybrid forward mid role that Zorko has played. And we drafted Lohmann who has played high half forward and mid as a junior. And we have Ashcroft coming in next year, who would be a natural long term replacement.

For me, Robertson would be a natural replacement for Lyons. Better runner though.

The club has spoken about Wilmot being the eventual successor for Rich. And we have Kiddy Coleman as well to come back in as a skilful small defender.

Harry Arnold, he's been popping up a bit lately
Yeah a few guys have mentioned him. He might find himself in a good spot at the end of the year with us. We may well be looking for value picks after spending all our draft points on Ashcroft and Fletcher. A young tall, taken towards the end of the draft, without an expectation to play first team football straight up may suit our list.

That has crossed my mind. Though I’d think it more likely if we pushed an extra late pick in to the rookie draft.

So to the possibility in the mid season draft, either us or someone else.

I am more worried keeping some of the good young kids if they feel like they get games elsewhere.
It is the depth thing you need good depth. Although as you said Ashcroft/Fletcher coming in do they jump over someone like Dev or T Berry
so do you stay as backup while waiting for older players to go or move
I mean Keays and add Walker getting games and playing well elsewhere. They where just depth here

I agree that the individual pieces are potentially all there for replacement. But I do worry that we havent had the chance to give them much exposure in the roles and may be forced to make it all happen at the same time. Its be one of my biggest worries with Fagan's coaching in that we dont rotate through the kids enough to give them a proper taste of senior football

I do agree although problem with giving young kids a go.
Most need 3-4 weeks to get up to pace.
There also not so many gimme games and you need to keep structure.
Even this week North could play well and we be off and loose.

There was quite a bit of rotation last year through injury and other unavailability, so we saw quite a bit of Dev, Sharp, Prior and of course Kiddy. I don't really see the point in worrying about rotations - we have a chance to win a flag and stacking wins and building chemistry has to be the main game.

I'd also say Fages has been pretty good about giving young-ish guys games when they warrant it - Noah and Kiddy are clear best 22 players pretty early in their careers, Sharp got the debut in round 1 last year, etc. I just don't see us currently carrying too many guys who you'd want to phase the kids out for, and its not like we have a bunch of top 10 draft picks that aren't playing. Assuming Ashcroft comes to us at the end of the year I don't think he'll be left playing reserves footy all of 2023 without an opportunity to play seniors.

I feel it is more a case of the coaching group, playing him forward to develop his forward game. I have seen this a bit where the clubs uses the reserves to try players in different in different roles to try and and improve/ develop different parts of there game. INstead of playing them in there most comfortable and natural position.

I have said it heaps of times I am a hugggge Dev Robbo fan,
BUT....... surely if he is not in the best 22 at the end of the year and WCE put an offer to him he would have to seriously consider it. The one thing the WCE are crying out for is Quality young midfielders ....
