Short v long contracts have merits. I tend to think the carrot of working towards a contract is good but some players don't want six months as it's too disruptive for family, partners and friends.

Carmichael nominated 18 months so under AFL contract laws, we are obligated to give him 18 months unless he breaks the contract agreement in some capacity. Few players do so we can safely rule that one out. Our plan with him is probably to play him in the VFL for three weeks, get the legs pumping in our game plan, then slide him into seniors.

Advantage of this is that we have hopefully unlocked the extra spice we need to make finals. A lot of our stars are returning in Rounds 14-18 for that tilt. It's optimistic but we know the AFL script writers clearly don't read what should happen.
Stars? We don’t exactly have stars on the sidelines. We have Grundy who’s a great ruck, not a star. Then we have serviceable player kreuger, stop gap madge, and we don’t even know if dean can play afl lvl. We are close to full strength, and prob the closest of all the teams. (I still think Johnson can play afl lvl for sure, but he’s a long way back due to his injury)

You lost me at stars. We have player's to return but no stars

I think this is going to be the watch on us for the rest of the year. We’ll want to keep winning and playing finals from here will no doubt be a goal but we’ll want to balance this with the eye on the future so I expect we’ll see Dean, Johnson and potentially Carmichael at some point at senior level so we can ascertain what we’ve got and what we might need going forward.

This is interesting. Of the 5 names on dekka's board. None of them was a key forward or defender.

The Magpies had only five names on their draft board. Four were gone by the time they were on the clock. Jai Culley went to West Coast. Essendon took Massimo D’Ambrosio. Hawthorn and Port Adelaide added ruckmen in Max Ramsden and Brynn Teakle respectively. It meant Carmichael was on his way to the AIA Centre.

Doubt there was any worth grabbing. North picked up Dawson but he’s a lesser dean who I’m sure we still have high hopes for. From what I’ve seen Dawson’s kicking is exactly as stated, poor.

Yet we had the number 1 pick on the board. Massimo went at pick 3 (derksen at pick 5 but wasnt on our board) Bauer went to richmond after our pick, but not your real key forward.

Although, they were likely targeting mcstay at that point, so that may not have been a need,

Hine seems not to rate KPF's it seems unless we are Eying to hit the Talls in the Draft this year

OR

There was no good one's in the Mid-Season Draft

Interesting. I thought Derkson may have been on our list.

There wasn't too many in the MSD. Hine rates talls very highly matter of fact. He was a huge fan of last years talls and also the ones in 2020

We’ve done well with MSD in recent years with Noble, Johnson and Carmichael all playing last week and all showing potential for good AFL careers. It’s a free hit in the middle of the year that has been a real gold mine for the Pies
Dont forget the beggy who has huge potential.

Yeah but the VFL can pluck someone from country football if worst comes to worst. It just seemed perculiar.
It's not that easy, most good quality country ruckman probably make more playing in the bush or suburban leagues, I don't think the VFL pays that much, I could be wrong

Really? News to me. If you don't live in Victoria, the finer details of the VFL escape you.
