Training 2022 Pre Season

We've done well.

The club incidence of ACL injuries in the AFL has been consistent over the past decade with just under one (0.8) injury per club per season. ACL injuries are the second most prevalent injury in the AFL (after hamstring injuries) and in 2019 ACL injuries caused 17.9 missed games per club per season and are therefore a significant burden both in treatment costs and missed matches (Table 1).14 ACL injuries tend to occur early during the playing season and preseason training.15 A ten-year surveillance study reported that 5% of players sustained an ACL injury.1

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

5% means we'd expect around 2 players per decade to be injured.
Not sure how that then translates to 0.8 per year per season. Does that suggest re-occurring injuries?

I'm starting to raise a few questions about our pre-season training regimes.

Last year our season was completely derailed by the major injuries to key players in the preseason.

This year it is happening again.

This can't be just put down to luck or the football gods hate us...

I've watched a few Ratten strategy meetings and he focuses on ... spots are up for grabs, who wants it, this spot is yours if you beat your teammate... surely this encourages players to take unneccessary risks.

Thoughts?

Seriously?
The kid landed awkwardly after marking a ball - hardly taking an “unnecessary risk.”
Just bloody unlucky.
It’s a competitive sport, they don’t need to be told they need to earn their spot. We need to practise as we want to play.
How can that be put down to training regimes?

Lol, man you are an angry dude.

You can do what you like, I’m simply suggesting posters grieving about this aren’t out of place decrying it as bad luck or even saying it feels like we’re cursed. Maybe have a cup of chamomile and relax my friend.

TBH, Saints supporters do have a history of “oh, woe is us.”
Probably as a result of our dismal winning record. But it does get a bit old.
I’d much rather look at it as, yeah it’s sh*t, but at least we’ve got some pretty good players to cover him.

You’re right, one flag in a hundred and a bit years, lost two in recent times for a freak toe poke and a bad bounce and had a number 1 pick wasted in concussion.

We’re notoriously lucky.

Let em grieve mate however they need mate, it sucks.

A toe poke, a bounce. The goal review that came in after 2009, the 'time on' in drawn Grand Finals after 2010.

Personally don't see the harm in blaming St Kilda Luck for the bad things that happen. Feels like a curse.

That's correct bad luck, but blaming on a curse and that is an easy cop out.
Toe poke. We dominated the first half and in the wet were 7.7 to 7.1, at least three of those points were gimme goals. 10.4 to 7.1 and the game is virtually over. Lyon left Ball on the bench in the second half.
2010 we were lucky to be in the game only reason we came back was because Lyon had to change up because Gardiner got injured, Kosi in the ruck, Gilbert up forward Ray on to Swan.
We got into the lead with 6 to go. Could not seal the deal.

Fate in our own hands and we blew it. But yeah cursed.

We are definitely cursed :moustache:

Good to hear a Saints supporter say this. We lost those GFs because we kept the oppo in the game with poor goal kicking throughout the games. It sucks, but when you keep the games tight it becomes a coin toss and we lost the toss.

When I think of a curse against us, I think of Nicky's dad dying the day before the 97GF or recent injuries to players in the 10 guernsey. But every club has hard luck stories, I mean look at what's happened to Adelaide in the last few years.

You have to admit, the notion of a second flag being put down to ritual sacrifice, and weekly seances with the spirit of Madame Sosostris, does have a certain "Only in St Kilda" vibe to it ;)

I remember Leon Davies that had done **** all all day popping up in the last 2 minutes to kick a goal from the boundary line. Why can’t that happen for us

Lmao, one injury in and we’re already in a full fledged debate over the legitimacy of curses.

How much of a number did the 2021 season do on everyone here?

I feel your pain. But we need some pre-season matches to get this show on the road, ASAP.

Coff was our ritual sacrifice to the footy Gods ... we're sweet from here ... ;)

I guess I just don’t think “grieving” is really so appropriate over a game/sport when there’s so much other sh*t stuff happening in the world.

I get as peed off, sulky and frustrated as anyone else over injuries, bad losses etc etc, but I’d hardly grieve - at the end of the day it’s just a game.

Each to their own, I guess.

LMAO

Luckily we’ve got depth in that position - Highmore I’m looking at you :fire:

Yes we are the only team to ever suffer from an injury. We are cursed, we are victims. Jesus

We are cursed and it’s all Trout’s fault!

It doesn’t matter what’s going on in the world. There’s always shit going on somewhere that’s really bad, so if you’re feeling grief over any kind of loss, be it minor or major, then it’s much healthier to express it, than to bottle it up. Or try to pretend it isn’t there.

And it certainly isn’t helpful to boss others around or try to bully them into doing or saying what you want them to, while they are expressing their grief.

There’s a good and informative page about it here at Health Direct.

“Grief is a response to the loss of someone or something that was important.”

Regardless of what’s going on in the world, we’re all heavily invested in our footy club and those who play for it, hence being here talking about it every day, so it’s only natural for us to feel a form of grief when we hear the news that a young guy at our club who was busting his ass to rebound from a poor year last year has suffered a serious, year-ending injury. Especially after we’d been hearing how well he’d been going.

Those feelings you feel when hearing news like that are known as grief.

“Grieving is an individual process and it is different for everyone

So anyone telling anyone else how to grieve really needs to pull their head in.

“Everybody reacts to grief differently. Common feelings include:
  • sadness
  • shock
  • denial
  • numbness, a sense of unreality
  • anger
  • guilt
  • blame
  • relief”
I’d say most of those emotions have been expressed here since we heard the news. Why? Because we’re experiencing a form of grief.

“Every person grieves differently”

It’s not the end of the world, but that doesn’t mean you’re still not better off expressing your grief in your own way than to bottle it up, or pretend it’s not there.

Same in 1997- should have been much further in front at half time -poor goal kicking

Jeez Posters bringing up '97, '09, '10, bounces, toe-pokes and curses- get a grip people!

It sucks for Coffield but we have an arguably better player in Highmore ready for that position and a better rebounder in Sinclair also raring to go. To say we have options off Half Back is an understatement.

Not all doom and gloom yet!! Bring on Round 1, shaft Collingwood and we're away
