Jeez Posters bringing up '97, '09, '10, bounces, toe-pokes and curses- get a grip people!

It sucks for Coffield but we have an arguably better player in Highmore ready for that position and a better rebounder in Sinclair also raring to go. To say we have options off Half Back is an understatement.

Not all doom and gloom yet!! Bring on Round 1, shaft Collingwood and we're away

I remember everyone saying this last year “it’s okay, just one injury, still got depth”.

Worked out well.

When it comes to cursing I feel like I can claim ITK status.

The curse ? Coff's knee ? Injurys and close GF losses ? It all goes back to the "StKilda schoolgirl scandal - all of it.
Goes way deeper than that. Started with the 1971 GF. In a low scoring game, 27 points up deep in the 3rd Q. Still 20 points up at ¾ time with Hawthorn kicking 5 goals to that point. They kick 7 in the last with Keddie, unsighted until then, kicking 4 of those. In the days of no interchange it was between Keddie and one other (whose name escapes me) to be replaced. He stays on and the rest is history. We lose prelims in 72 and 73 and spend the next two decades as the laughing stock of the comp.

Fast forward to 1997. Close to unbackable favourites going in we absolutely bottle it. Yes we lost Everett in the qualifying final but they had no Modra and no Riccuito and spent a month of the road after finishing 5th. They had no right to make it let alone win it. Winmar’s dad tragically passing away the night before is no reason for a no name like Ellen kicking five. I can cop 2009 and 2010 as we had a read hot crack but 1997 still burns.

Absolutely spot on analysis.
The 1971 GF was a "sliding doors" moment in the clubs history. St Kilda wins that GF and the Saints and Hawthorns fortunes swap over. St Kilda more than likely becomes the powerhouse and Hawthorn become the perennial "losers". I hate what Bob Keddie did to our club!!!

Blake Acres continuing where he left off with us - ranked the worst kick at Fremantle and the 9th worst in the competition by Champion Data.

I agree totally. I was being sarcastic. I went to the '71 GF as a ten year old. Scarred for life after that. Also went to '97, '09 and '10
but read the writing on the wall and watched the replay on TV. I know, I know, I know.......

It doesn’t matter what’s going on in the world. There’s always sh*t going on somewhere that’s really bad, so if you’re feeling grief over any kind of loss, be it minor or major, then it’s much healthier to express it, than to bottle it up. Or try to pretend it isn’t there.

And it certainly isn’t helpful to boss others around or try to bully them into doing or saying what you want them to, while they are expressing their grief.

There’s a good and informative page about it here at Health Direct.

“Grief is a response to the loss of someone or something that was important.”

Regardless of what’s going on in the world, we’re all heavily invested in our footy club and those who play for it, hence being here talking about it every day, so it’s only natural for us to feel a form of grief when we hear the news that a young guy at our club who was busting his ass to rebound from a poor year last year has suffered a serious, year-ending injury. Especially after we’d been hearing how well he’d been going.

Those feelings you feel when hearing news like that are known as grief.

“Grieving is an individual process and it is different for everyone

So anyone telling anyone else how to grieve really needs to pull their head in.

“Everybody reacts to grief differently. Common feelings include:
  • sadness
  • shock
  • denial
  • numbness, a sense of unreality
  • anger
  • guilt
  • blame
  • relief”
I’d say most of those emotions have been expressed here since we heard the news. Why? Because we’re experiencing a form of grief.

“Every person grieves differently”

It’s not the end of the world, but that doesn’t mean you’re still not better off expressing your grief in your own way than to bottle it up, or pretend it’s not there.

Apologies if you think I was “bossing” or “bullying” others.

As I did say, each to their own.

I feel crappy for Coff, and obviously frustrated for us and the team, but I’ve grieved over enough major stuff in my life that this is not going to be one of them. And as my post reflects my own personal point of view, that’s all I’m saying.

After the experiences of the last 10 years, I'm fully happy to raise questions about our training structures, drafting and regimes.

I watch, read and listen to all the media that the club produces.

There are some messaging that I love and some I really don't like.

I'l keep on questioning until the season starts.

Nothing wrong with questioning, but what are you questioning?

Why a guy did his knee?

Shit happens unfortunately and some injuries are unavoidable.

This thread is getting out of control , one bloke has a freak accident and all of a sudden we are cursed and god knows what else , we are all peeved that Coff did his knee but with how good the surgeons and the rehab people are these days I'm 100% confident he will come back as good as ever.
People who are questioning the clubs training methods or the so called messaging coming out of the club are shadow jumpers IMO ,,,,, Relax

What I am asking is .... Do you think encouraging strong physical competition between teammates may cause pre-season injuries?

Pre-season cup has now gone, state of origin has now gone, post season matches are now gone.

They are all gone because it is too risky for the players to play in these events. The main season is far too important and it is the club who pays these players to perform over a long AFL season.

I have not seen the Coffield incident.

Coff is the baby of his 2017 class, not far off being 2018 instead. Whilst he's one of the potential bolters this year his previous fluctuating form has been frustrating and a year off to grow and mature in the Dan Hannebery wing at Moorabbin isn't necessarily the worst thing in the world.
Also the timing of it is pretty ideal as far as these things go. He'll be back to %100 for round 1 next year and it opens a spot for Pato or Leo in the meantime.

You prefer them to be all put in cotton wool ?

Dunno about that, I think they are gone mainly because the clubs didn't take them seriously (fair enough) plus the public wasn't that interested, plus cost and admin in staging them by the AFL and probably not much interest from the broadcasters. The few weeks prior to the start of the season circa 21st century doesn't have space for a pre-season comp. Health point of view also included as it is a long season.

The intensity of contact training does of course correlate with a higher possibility of injury, but it is a necessary bit of preparation. Clubs need to do match sim and genuine contact training throughout pre-season in order to be competitive come round one. All clubs would have similar levels of contact/match sim based training throughout pre-season. All clubs would know it comes with risk, but that it is a necessary/unavoidable form of preparation. St Kilda wouldn't do any more of it than is necessary or more than most clubs. Just an unfortunate element to the game that injuries happen like this.
