Was speaking to an AFL player about the importance of Round 1 and he said it is a mental block to be behind the ledger. You feel like you are playing catchup the first 3rd of the season if you lose.

Interesting that it is just another game but might actually impact the emotional energy of the team especially one trying to vastly improve.

be interested to know what club this player played for. A team like Carlton, a loss in rnd 1 would be a big mental block - 'here we go again' - whereas a loss for Rich/Geel/Port etc it wouldnt be an issue at all i would think.

History would suggest they are not overly phased by it, nor rnds 2 3 or 4!

Remember Bolts first season, after our first win in round 4 he mentioned how important it was as the players had been working so hard and deserved it and needed it. That period in his first year when they started to show faith in the game plan and pulled out some good wins... then later seasons, rot sets in again, loss of hope, loss of love for the gameplan.... coach gets cranky (under pressure from the board/supporters) and starts pushing players and peeing off support staff... nekminit coach sacked.

If only Ratts was afforded that one bad season, that support that Bolts, Teague, Bomber, Hardwick, Goodwin got afforded during their tenure. Ratts may never have succeeded but we'd never have gotten Mick who by far was the worst coach we've ever had.

we wouldn't have McKay Walsh waiters Charlie if malthouse didn't stink the joint up. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction

That physics. In football it is not guaranteed that you get and equal and opposite reaction. Actions have consequences but they are not constant.

Does this indicate that Walshy participated in match sim?

Generally yes - but looks like today was blue v orange and was split based on matchups not injury/team status.

Highly unlikely I would have thought.
If you look through the album, you can see several players switch jumpers (eg. O'Brien, TDK, Parks, Fogarty, Cottrell), so I don't think it's indicative of anything.

They all had jumpers on, some played match sim, at which point they may have swapped their jumpers to even out the teams and practice tactics.

Well no, Walsh was clearly wearing the SAME jumper as others who are (all but certainly) NOT injured at all......

Draw your own conclusions after that.
