Eternal optimism is a good outlook to lead a happy life but not to run a successful AFL club. Why are we the only club looking at him? Is it because we are smarter than every other club or is it more likely we are more incompetent than every other club when it comes to list management.

Facts are he'll be 32 next season and has barely played a game in 5 years. Casboult played consistent footy throughout his career and in a position of scarcity. I understand the club wants another cheap veteran but they should look for players that are likely to have a body that allows them to play.
The Casboult mention is a good point. IMO we got lucky with the Casboult hit, as that could have easily gone the other way. I hope GC isn't looking at how successful that acquisition was and now trying to be smart for the sake of smart.

Can't deny that he had a good run post his surgery in Germany, though.

Define 'good run'...5 games = good run

If he wants to go on I'm not opposed to him coming up here and if he can put together a full pre-season we can then consider adding him. Need proof of concept.

Grant Birchall

8 games out of a possible 88

Went to Brisbane at Age 32 and played 39 out of 43 games

Seems like a very Geelong thing to do. If it works it could be the missing piece ( smith) if not then oh well didn't cost us much (jenkins). I think we are almost at a point where our list is good enough to take a punt on a player like hannebery.

It looks like we got probably again 5 extra rookie spots. Yet, Suns got limited resources for development. Why not to use one spot for Hannebery as essentially a development coach. If he could stay healthy and play some games that would be a bonus. I would expect he is a professional and sharing his finals experience with our young midfield could be handy. He would come cheap. No dramas for me.

Agree. We fill vacant rookie spots with players who are never gonna make it so might aswell have a player who if he has a good run at it will be a starting 22 and also a coach of some sort thrown in. Hannebery has always been known as one of the hardest trainers going so I think will be a good influence for the young guys.

You can put DFA's on the rookie list, can't you?
Not sure about that, but I don't believe Hannebery qualifies as a Delisted Free Agent.....

NOT A DELISTED FREE AGENT IF Player retires OR rejects offer from current club OR requests removal from club list (‘delists’ himself).

Can always be picked up in the draft. Casboult was not picked up as a DFA but was drafted in the rookie draft, which meant a 1 year deal ont he rookie list.
Could do the same here with whoever we want to pick up.

With Hanners, sounds like first contact made during trade period when it would have been a late pick trade if it went ahead.
Which is what happened to Hodge. Retired, then un-retired and got traded to the Lions for effectively a pick in the 70's.

Not fussed who they pick, but should pick someone up for depth.
There are a few options there, just have to make sure they are good off-field.

Reuben Ginbey (Gold Coast)

189cm Midfielder/Defender, WA

As long as the Bombers don’t strike first, the Suns look set to snap up Ginbey with their first pick. The West Australian is the preferred option for West Coast with their top-10 selection but is unlikely to get there given the interest from Gold Coast and Essendon higher in the order. A big-bodied midfielder, Ginbey also has a second string to his bow with his ability to play across half-back. He was Western Australia’s MVP in the national championships, capping a season which has seen his star significantly rise.

Sounds like Ginbey will be able to slot straight in to our halfback line while we await the return of guys like Weller, Powell and Budarick. It feels like the really good teams in the league have found ways to make these bigger bodied medium defenders impact players like Starcevich (187cm) for Brisbane and Maynard (189cm) for Collingwood so I think it's worth a shot if we can blood a guy like Ginbey who probably eventually ends up in the midfield anyway.

what do others see as our big weakness? for me i'd say speard from the contest...

pick 5 looks like we will get that HB for the future so tick for a need but adding one of anderson or hanners is a waste,

next year we get two really good talls but wlll mean in 3 drafts we have added zero high quailty mids to the mix,
