Game Day 2023 AFL Draft - The Late Male Edition

Walls is not that bad.

I can understand the Luke Jackson trade.

We all got hot and bothered about the 2nd round pick. Perhaps the parties were well aware of the compromised draft. We were expecting to finish much better than we did but even still:
34 > 42, 57 isn’t a lot of difference.

He was always going for 2 first rounds.m, especially considering the 2022 pick being 13 (15).

With Cerra it was 6 (8) + F3 (~45). We wanted a F2 but being out of contract didn’t have the ground to stand on.

Logue went for an early 2nd plus change. PSD a genuine threat from North. They were desperate to land a freebie last year.

Langdon a second round upgrade and F2. Slightly better than Henry. We wanted the end of first round (ended up pick 28) but that was never on the table it seems.

He could push a little harder for those out of contract but the deals to bring players in haven’t been Terrible (could be better I agree). We paid up for LJ but our ladder finishing position was a major factor for that. 1-2 more wins and the deal becomes much improved for us. Trading in Hogan the person was the issue not the trade cost. His form at the moment shows how decent a football player he can be.

We know what we’re dealing with once the season ends.

Two first round picks and possibly some other sort of pick upgrade will get the job done. Similar to what the parties likely anticipated the LJ deal was supposed to prob look like:

15 + 13 + 2nd > early third

Anything more and we are loaded with change apparently so he goes to PSD.

Sounds like he is a good chance of re-signing anyway.
Agreed... Agreed.... and then did a massive baulk at those 2 firsts and a second. And the direct comparison to Jackson gets a big NO.

I would need McDonald plus a decent first (5-10) for Jackson in some theoretical trade.

Rhino reporting that the NGA pick matching will move back to pick 20 next year. That doesn’t solve the problem however. The suns and co will still be able to get a heap for first round academy picks 🤬
So we miss Edwards and Motlop, WC miss Collard (prob for the best as we can lure him home) then when Collingwood have a couple coming through they lower it back down to 20!

I think you’re right, we’ll likely hold it over for the MSD and see how his rehab is progressing, means we can sign Sharp straight away and trial 4 for the remaining spot we do fill.
This is correct I reckon. Just means we can have four players come and train. Sharp signed on Monday. Then four players training. Likely we hold one off for MSD. Our capacity to have a selection in the MSD will be dependent on a LTI at that time in June.

Of course it will. They change it long enough for us to miss out on a few then change it back in time for other clubs to benefit again.

I don't suppose any of the big Vic clubs have some second round NGA prospects coming up by any chance?

Convenient that we were the ones most affected by this

Lost motlop and Edwards lol, they even started the rule early for motlop

I'm still a fan of academies, look at all the trading it creates, it creates opportunities for clubs to get up the draft

Opens the market up, some clubs need lower picks and the other need higher picks

If no club wants to trade down for points then clubs are wayyyy less likely to trade out of the first round

Say it with me

"Jye is the exception, not the rule"

repeat it

"Jye is the exception, not the rule"

One more time

"Jye is the exception, not the rule"
Know that is true but in my opinion McDonald is not an A grader , lets see how he goes this up coming year without Buddy being the main focus

You are absolutely right. And also - it won’t be popular on this board but this petty rivalry we have with the WCE is doing neither side any favours in the broader scheme of things.
The VFL love nothing more than dividing and conquering of the two WA clubs. There is no sense of working together to advocate for mutually beneficial outcomes for both clubs. The SA Clubs could be involved too.
Fremantle
West coast
Adelaide
Port Adelaide

Are all shafted by the VFL comp in similar areas. Why aren’t they coming together as a block to push though things that are in their interests as one unified voice?
B coz west coast are assholes ?

I think there’s a fair chance we’re quite shite this year tbh.

Imagine being last of the ladder and not having a spot to use in the MSD. I don’t think we’ll be that bad (especially given West Coast and North) but a high MSD pick seems to be a chance to add what is probably a second round level talent to the rookie list for free. After that you’re just adding standard rookies in the MSD imo.

If it were up to me I’d just trial four small forwards from the state leagues and select the best one. We might genuinely be looking at two players though - Voss and Beattie are very different players yet we’re trialling both.

Can someone fill me in on Sharp? I had him in my dream team a couple of years ago and he was pretty good IIRC. Understand he wanted a trade to Freo end of 2022 but then stayed on GC's list for 2023. Why didn't he play last year?
Sharp requested a trade to Freo in 2022. The deal did not get done as Gold Coast refused a third round pick in exchange. Stu Dew decided that if Sharp didn’t want to be part of the team he would leave him in the Magoos all year (2023). Sharp trained exceptionally well by all accounts over the pre season despite Gold Coast not assisting him to go home. He also copped the demotion all year and was one of the best in the 2’s.
Poor form by Dew but that’s why he has been punted.

The age old question who wins?
A champion team or a team of champions. Too many gifted players, doesn’t
hide lazy or poor management.
GWS, GC, have an abundance of riches, but off the field is where you can
drive success.
Sharp maybe will be the best trade done this year. Absolute bargain and makes
us even quicker.

This sounds like complete nonsense. You are basically saying Dew deliberately left a best 22 player out of his team for the entire season? Therefore consciously making the team weaker?

Even though he was under IMMENSE pressure to get wins and save his job? Think about it for a minute.

Yeah, nah.

Plenty of coaches have a "kill one to teach the herd" mentality. Our former coach was one.

They only need to think that the message to the playing group and the hope or unity it brings is worth more to the success of the club than the one player who is cut out.

Gold Coast didn't lose their games on the wing.
