AFL Draft 2023: Every club’s current picks, targets and all the late mail

PORT ADELAIDE

Current picks: 69, 83, 87
It’s not as bad as it looks, Port fans. Once picks have been absorbed matching academy and father-son bids, Port Adelaide is likely to enter the draft in the 50s on Tuesday night. With father-son prospect Rome Burgoyne a part of next year’s crop, a move back into the top-end of this year’s draft using any of its 2024 selections appears unlikely, making it two consecutive years without a pick inside the top 35, after two busy trade periods. There might still be a few talented SANFL prospects available when the Power is on the clock but, as it has repeatedly showed, it won’t just look locally for a bargain, with the club showing some interest in Vic Metro defender Matt Carrol and GWV Rebels small Lachie Charleson, who booted 17 goals in the final Coates League matches, throughout the year.

THE AFL has written to clubs on Friday to confirm the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) rules for this summer.
Clubs have been advised the SSP will commence at 9am AEDT on Monday, November 27 and run across the pre-season before the deadline at 5pm AEDT on Monday, February 19.
AFL locks in dates, clarifies rules for pre-season SSP

Matt Carroll.

Don't mind seeing "quick" and "left footer" in a profile. Does look like the ball goes to where he wants it to go on the video.

Reads a bit like Farrell?

Really good ball use , deft touch, never missed a target in that footage, but another defensive flanker type , we have so many already. Can he play wing or half forward, otherwise no.

Lachie Charleson is the one I'm keen on if he slips slightly. Quick, nippy , pain in the ass , small forward.

West Coast is poised to strike the first live trade of draft night in a move that would deliver the Eagles a Harley Reid-Daniel Curtin dream quinella.

The Eagles have spent weeks fielding offers for their No.1 pick and rights to Reid, but instead of trading it out they are suddenly expected to not only secure Reid but also bring in Curtin with a second selection inside the top 10.
That would deliver the wooden-spooner the best player in the draft in Reid and also the best local player in Curtin.
But it is expected to come at a significant price, with West Coast having to trade out its future first-round pick to secure Curtin on Monday night.
Remarkably, Curtin could slide past Hawthorn (No.4) and Melbourne (No.6).
That would leave Curtin available for Greater Western Sydney at No.7, and that is where the Eagles are expected to make their move.
Should the Eagles offer up their future first-round pick for No.7 it would be a dilemma for the Giants, but ultimately an offer that rivals expect would be impossible to knock back.
The Giants would still hold a first-round pick (No.16) and trading for the Eagles’ future first could potentially deliver them the No.1 pick in next year’s draft.

Is there not a top ten/five WA talent in next year's draft?

I think it's more about West Coast probably realising they've got basically no top end young talent on their list and that the sooner they get some of it in the sooner they will improve.

Rookie Me website describes him as bringing intense pressure, but having issues with conversion.
Sounds like someone on our list already
🤔

We gonna end up drafting that kid who never got a game but rocked up every week aren't we..

When they ask the draftees "how many teams have you interviewed with?" I bet none of them mention Port Adelaide. Parker and Cripps are probably at Bonnydoon with the Hinkleys.

He demonstrated great flexibility in doing so, mostly plying his trade as an attacking half-back, but also capable of shutting down opponents and shifting further afield onto a wing or into midfield

The ball use is good, but the situations he executed that ball use were more impressive. Not sure about anything else to do with his stats, fitness, physical prowess, etc, but there was a lot there that screamed AFL player. Had a bit of a combo between Farrell and Hunter about him.

On another note though, I'm dreaming of Delean getting to us. Surely he won't, but holy shit, if he slipped to us that'd be massive. Would fill a desperate need.

Caroll and Charleson both look (very) good to me, even if Caroll wouldn’t fill an immediate need.

Dare I say it, but Charleson has a little bit of Robbie Gray about him in this footage of an 18 disposal, 4 goal finals performance:

Any chance we’d take both if they were still there? In any case, they seem too good from their respective highlights to both be available at such late picks.

Herald Sun Phantom Draft has Matt Caroll going to Carlton at 28. Interest from Collingwood as well.

Might be a bit of a stretch Caroll making it to 50 something.

Crows allegedly planning on going early on Goad is interesting. I like Goad but taking him 1st round is maybe saying something about what's available after the 1st round.

Charleson and O'Leary are both a bit undersized but have the X factor Parker looks for with late picks.

Wouldn't mind either of those. Delean or Freijah as sliders would be handy but not holding my breath.

When is Twomey doing a phantom? He usually covers who all clubs are talking to.

As for Port Adelaide, which currently holds Pick 73, the club recently met with lively 176cm small forward Lachlan Charleson. The GWV Rebels had some big Coates Talent League games towards the back-end of the season, including against Bendigo where he booted a whopping 8.4 from 22 touches.
