Jeez, few headscratchers this year... More so than usual me thinks.

Not sure De Goey, Newcombe, Allen, Jackson or Quaynor have any real place in this squad looking at who missed out.

Shocked by Taranto's omission.

If you're going to give Jackson a nod, Gawn is stiff. Newman I feel is pretty stiff too, especially with Quaynor getting a look in. Sam Taylor hasn't played enough games, but I thought for sure they'd pick him.
I'm not shocked at all, infact with who's on the panel.

Doesn’t help having Kane cornes on the panel re taranto
Neither does ranking 565th in the league for kicking efficiency (bottom 10 in the AFL of eligible players)

2 from Melbourne….just noticed Steven May couldn’t even get picked…

Martin’s not competing with Rozee. Rozee gets in the team as a midfielder. I was just highlighting Martin’s average stats are similar (worse in midfield stats like clearances and disposals, better averages in scoreboard related ones).

His total stats are lower as he’s missed 3 games and Rozee missed none. Just as Stewart’s totals were way lower than loads of other defenders like Sicily as he missed 5 games and was injured early in another.

No big deal.

And honestly I think that would've been a fair enough reason to exclude Stewart. But Saad and Maynard should've been the player to compare totals with and decide. Sicily should've been the 1st or 2nd general defender picked OR taken one of the KPD spots.

If you're using averages you'd want to be truly elite for a couple of SIs, goals and goal assists for forwards or rebound 50s and intercepts for defenders (there's pretty strong links there for those as main criteria).

For general forwards Martin has that for SIs but not goals or assists. He's high relative to forwards in midfield heavy stats but that draws him into a battle with Petracca and Rozee.

Stewart last year for general defenders was 1st for average intercepts/intercept marks and 6th for rebound 50s. If he was 1st for intercepts and 40th for rebound 50s it likely would've ruled him out of a back pocket spot.

Even on totals he still was equal 1st on intercepts with Saad, and had more R50s than both Maynard and Saad... despite missing 5 games and having 1 injured early. So he at least met the criteria of excelling on those rebounding metrics. Which would be like Martin adding 2.2 goals or 1.6 assists a game to his impressive SI average.

personally i think the team mix is pretty solid. some glaring omissions (such as gawn) and some interesting inclusions (mason redman for example: while he had a decent season i don't think he's comparable to any of the other players who play his role)

it's only 44 players, they can't fit everyone in. i think that sheezel missing is a bit egregious. good selections on anderson/allen though. I think both of them (along with nick larky) have both really highlighted some of the talent that rests in some of the weaker teams.

I watch every game there is and I'd say those are the 6 most accurate reflectors on a KPD's impact on games. What do you disagree with about that?

Do you really give two shites if a KPD has 2% better DE if he can't defend your average local auskicker? Metres gained? Handballs? Just a bunch of rubbish the rest of it.
There’s more to footy than if someone has 0.1 contested marks more than someone else per game. As much as people love stats, it’s not everything, especially when it’s so tight.
Out of interest how many goals have each player had kicked on them? Then can we include goals from marks, contested and uncontested, marks where a 3rd party tried to spoil but failed when they shouldn’t have, free kicks, those that were they and weren’t, shots at goal from all angles, goals where that player may have been on the bench and was not their opponent. You get the drift.

Which mids are missing that deserve a spot ahead of Newcombe? He was 14th in the coaches voting.

Wow. The Dusty scars run deep from 2017-20 for some Cat fans … real deep. It’s ok …. he probably won’t make the final team and you can sleep again at night.

Classic, so you're now reduced to rolling out blaisee style troll responses. Nice projecting though as you're clearly the one upset that the masses rightly are dismissing your flimsy arguments.

Why not? He has the most coaches votes of all rucks and all key forwards.
You saying he had a better year than Charlie Curnow because of the coaches votes?

More hawthorn players in the squad than Melbourne players. Bizarre
Eh. Oliver, Gawn and Fritsch all missed big chunks of the year, and May wasn't at his absolute best. Just happy that Viney is getting some recognition
